A fun match to watch, though it has to be noted that ASV had a major slump in both skills and confidence after FO that year especially in serving and forehand - they were much better in 92 or 94

Qiu ZH she definitely suffered a loss of confidence but Hingis truly was a bad match up for her. 7 slam defeats from here till Australian open 2000. ASV never could work out Hingis.

@@CJJAK37 That's definitely true, though there were a few chances in 1998 when ASV had a moderate but memorable resurgence. The same couldn't apply to against other "weaker" prototypes of Hingis - ASV is Coetzer and Maleeva’s top nemesis

Qiu ZH agree. ASV did have her chances. Take Philadelphia 97. She was up 61,53 and ended up losing the match. Against Hingis, it was more mental at the beginning and then ASV turned too defensive from 99 onwards and did t really stand a chance. Martina effectively turned ASV into a perennial slam quarterfinalist and she did it to Monica as well

The only way to beat Hingis was hit the hell out of the ball consistently and knock her off the court . Tactical play didn’t work as she was just simply better at that than anyone else during her reign . She was moved from the top by Venus and Serena , Davenport and capriati to a lesser extent . And pierce on a hot day . The big babes of tennis

It's definitely the match-ups and how they play against one another. The best ways to play against Steffi was to catch her off guard at the net or retrieve ball after ball with a lot of topspin and drive her to impatient errors. Sanchez Vicario could do the latter very well.
