I'm amazed how hingis gets points. at first, she looked like she was going to lose. but, she collected points little by little calmly. mentally very strong for an ordinary woman. You need to be aggrasive to beat her, not giving her any chances to think. What a legend to both of them😁😁

My fav match from the two! Love the court speed, the long rallies, and steffi yelling at the umpire for not calling one of martina’s shots as wide and making her hit a ridiculous forehand to win the point and the umpire looking back at her and agreeing with her lol

Watching this now I more so realize how good steffi really was. I always looked down upon the slice because im a backhand connoisseur but it’s pretty effective. She also has excellent footwork , the best I’ve ever seen , and a great forehand + net skills/ court awareness. I like her ! Not sure she’s better than Serena tho like some people claim
@gk8913 жыл бұрын
Seles herself said that Graf's backhand never got the credit that it deserved in terms of how tough it was. In the 1995 U.S Open final, Graf hit some topspin backhands in the first set against Seles but it didn't always work well. In the commentary booth, Martina Navratilova said that Steffi really needed to be careful with that topspin backhand because it wasn't the right shot to use since it sat up higher (thus allowing Seles to tee-off on it). And that Steffi should stick with her slice since it stayed much lower through the court.

Even though Graf is getting older and older. It's getting to the end of his career. It's still so hard for Hingis to beat Graf. They have faced each other nine times in their careers. Graf won 7 times. And came back after Graf's 97 break. They played 3 games. Graf won twice. In one, Hingis was awarded a set 6-0. On top of that, the two of them have a Grand Slam record against each other, and Hingis has never beaten Graf. Grafy always beats Hingis in tennis grand slams.

Euh… all you say is biased. The first matches… Hingis was so young and Graf was like a confirmed player, no ? And Gras wasn’t 40 years old in 1999 (and before 😁), she was enough young and strong to play !

Steffi looks not in the mood from beginning. She hits the ball so carefully but her movements bit slower. She beat Hingis in Philadelphia 1998 and FO 1999. Graf was not bad. She had an excellent comeback after 9 months absent
@carrerau71382 жыл бұрын
Actually that comeback was not very good. She won only 4 tournaments in 1.5 years. She never reached top form again, except in a handful of matches.

@@MrToronto1977 It's all about match-ups. The best way to trouble Steffi was to either catch her off guard at the net (e.g. Navratilova and sometimes McNeil, Sabatini, de Swaardt), retrieve ball after ball after ball and goad her into making impatient unforced errors (e.g. Sanchez Vicario and sometimes Coetzer) or consistently barrage her with power from the baseline (e.g. Davenport, Seles, Williams). Hingis was neither fast nor powerful enough to really trouble Steffi all that much which is why Steffi has a winning head to head record against her both before and after Steffi's surgeries. And while Hingis was an absolute master at manipulating the ball and moving it into all areas of the court, Graf was such a supreme athlete and mover that it didn't particularly matter.
@chromaticababy55103 жыл бұрын
@@MrToronto1977 in saying that , it’s one of my favourite matchups, in terms of actual shot making ability /talent - the way the two of them move the ball about the court is a joy to watch, there’s nothing like it today

@@gk891 their head to head bear little significance. They met few times after 96, and only in the FO final they were both playing great, in that case Hingis got close to winning. I think Hingis would have had the edge on clay and lose on all the other surfaces if they met when at the top
