I don't get it. I mean, I get it but I don't get this.

It's simply a complement to that post: www.martingrandjean.ch/connected-world-air-traffic-network/ to explain the transition from a geographic layout to a force-directed network.

OK I see now. Thanks for the clarification and the link. After reading the comments on the site, I was also wondering why the Pacific Islands where in-between S.American and Africa, yet I also understood them as behind. I also noted that you are using Gelphi to create the visualization. Is there any reason that the system has not been able to give you a better 3 dimensional picture? As in, producing an image that was more intuitively seen as multi-dimension? Thanks and keep up the great work.

Thank you for your response! Well, 3D that's always a big deal in network visualization. Tools are not that much made for that, mostly because a network is not supposed to be read as a visual "mapping" but much more as a mathematical object (where the only thing that count is the relation between the dots, not the layout). Other reason: there's not a lot of possibilities for publishing multidimensional pictures, and in an academic context, you still have to publish a "traditional" picture, in a paper that will be printed (in black and white...).

Well, this subject interests me because I work for a boutique firm that specializes in data management and visualization. Maybe we could be of any resource to you and your operations at UNIL. Let me know! Thanks again.
