I worked at MTV in the late 80's and early 90's and had access to all videos in broadcast quality. I made compilations on VHS which I'd play at parties. When this came on, the place would go wild, even though the song did not really get played on WDRE. It's that infectious. Also, love the German expressionist influences.

I am seriously unable to stop talking about Martini Ranch in general, and this video in particular: Its as though Fritz Lang directed a DEVO video starring the cast of Weird Science... I can't tell if this exemplifies the New Wave era, or if it's satirizing it...which would just make it MORE quintessentially New Wave😊 ("Reach", by the way, is if Wall Of Voodoo wrote the soundtrack to Road Warrior while watching Three Amigos😉)

I keep saying the same thing! 😂😂😂 It's like a video was tailored to my *exact* musical and aesthetic tastes, and released during my favorite era of popular music... And somehow I fucking MISSED it until 30 years later?😲 How does that happen? It's kinda my thing to know about stuff like this 😂 On one hand I am simply *delighted* this exists... ...on the other, I feel like I really dropped the ball😜😂
@michaelz6555 Жыл бұрын
I heard it on KROQ in the 80s all the time, and I always turned the volume up when it aired. Without listening to the credits, I just assumed it was another great Devo song. If it's any consolation about being late to the party, I was today years old when I learned that Bill Paxton was one of the front men.

I have no other model but myself to play I'm a man from birth, you won't turn me away When I'm with you why do I feel this way? You drive me wild and we mix the dark passions How can the labouring man find time for self-culture? What shall we call our game? It needs a charming name "Industry and spirit" We'll go off if we get near it These people need time off I thought readers like to look Tearing pages from the book And we mix the dark passions How can the labouring man find time for self-culture? I think it's important that you spend some time Make it in your prime Something's come up, I hope I'm not too late You see I'm feeling like a hero But I'm not so great I've tried writing it down Walking it off, shouting it out What am I talking about? And we mix the dark passions How can the labouring man find time for self-culture? I think it's important that you spend some time Make it in your prime Oh goddess of the night, am I wrong or am I right? Is the rhythm of your heart tearing you apart? You can watch me as I slip You can watch me as I slide But the rhythm of my heart makes me want to hide How can the labouring man find time for self-culture?

This all started for me when I was a kid watching Night Flight on TBS, beginning my taste for cultural outliers. I recall this 12" coming into my college radio station, where I played it every time I went on air. This was also the age of Night Music, the best music show to ever hit television. The lyrics to this song will never age. Thanks so much, I love this song and will always consider myself a Ranch Hand.

I keep asking myself the same question 😂 I was born in 1977. I was alive during the New Wave era, but very young--not really into music yet... it's like I was subconsciously absorbing it until I reached the right age. That turned out to be 12, when I discovered Post Modern: the heir to New Wave and precursor to Alternative. It was only natural that I began listening to the music that inspired the genre I liked...and it didn't hurt that the 90s sucked, thus lending a sense of nostalgia to the 80s. Point is, despite being alive when Martini Ranch were active, and developing a keen interest in their period and genre in my adolescence that has persisted for 3 decades... I completely missed them. And if it weren't for the fact that KZbin listed this video as a suggestion on a Barnes & Barnes vid (Bill Paxton was in several B&B videos, and Roky Schenck directed clips for both bands), I likely would have never heard of Martini Ranch. Makes me wonder what else is out there that I *should* know, but somehow don't 🤔

Bill Paxton, Andrew Todd Rosenthal, Mark Mothersbaugh, Rocky Schenck, and Bill Myers on drums, had their big breakthrough with national airplay with Martini Ranch's cryptic Techno-electro-synth-pop hit tune "How Can The Laboring Man Find Time For Self-Culture?"with three members of DEVO performing here, released in July 1986, right at the same time Bill Paxton was co-starring as the wise-guy Marine Corporal Hudson in James Cameron's ALIENS (Fox, 1986).

All I can say about this band, this video, and what lead me to find it here is this: I get a comforting sense of order and purpose to the universe when I find out that all my favorite creative people are either friends, collaborators, or both😊 It seems all the musicians, actors, filmmakers, and writers I TRULY love are no more than one, possibly two degrees of separation from each other... That would be impossible for them to get the idea from Weird Science. The band was formed in 1982. Weird Science was 1985. There are 3 members from the band Devo involved in this song. This makes more sense as it sounds more like a Devo song than it does an Oingo Boingo song.
