Took a one way flight to Massachusetts for it and drove it 13 hours back to North Carolina. Pretty wild experience but I’ve been daily driving it every day since and it’s been awesome. Pretty fun to say that my longest road trip I’ve ever taken was in an RX-8 of all cars. I’d say it’s well worth it if you’re prepared for what’s to come with these cars but the experience and community really makes it all worth it. I'd skip the intake upgrade entirely. The stock does everything just fine it's just bulky and a pain to remove. Get new coils, plugs and wires instead. The spark plugs are ~$100 for 4, BHR coils are not cheap but are better than doing an ls coil swap since they are drop in replacements. Stock Revision C coils are good too if you are on a Series I car. Series 2 (2009-2011) have the better coils from the factory but should probably be swapped anyhow.

@Dylman4210 ай бұрын
The AEM is worth it for two reasons: 1) It’s the easiest and cheapest way to to massively boost the best thing about this car - the sound of the engine at 9000rpm 2) the stock intake covers a massive section of the engine bay including the spark plugs, coils, plug wires and crucially, power steering coupler. All of which you will be accessing regularly just to keep the thing running. Huge time saver.
@MrScissor907 ай бұрын
I'd recommend mods that will support a longer healthier engine life. A sohn adaptor and fan controller are great cheap mods. Sohn adaptor will allow you to switch to a full synthetic oil for better lubricationas well as injecting a proper 2-stroke oil or straight premix into your engine. Also get some gauges for your oil pressure and temp. A high flow cat to let your engine breath better or cat-less if you don't mind an O2 sensor light always being on in the dash (bonus you can now spit flames). Upgrade those ignition coils as the OEM ones just don't have the duty cycle to keep up with a rotary engineD585 coils (LS coils) are the way to go. The general consensus in the rx7/rx8 forums is to stick with NGK plugs and wires. Intake isn't necessary, Mazda did a really great job with this factory airbox but Racing Beat's revi intake offers a modest improvement. These are a few things I have picked up over the span of 12 years owning a wankel. BTW, if you are on the market for finding a new battery for your rotary, consider steering clear of AGM type batteries. These engine bays get piping hot and old-fashioned flooded cell batteries handle heat better than AGM.
@fortunefed87193 ай бұрын
I'll second all of this. Also, relocating the battery to the trunk is a great quality of life mod. You can run any battery you want, even lithium, and you don't have to remove it every time you want to look in the engine bay. There is room along the left side door sill to run two 0/1 gauge wires and a grommet through the firewall that can fit both.

And i see a lot of comments of people hoping to one day get an rx8. Opinions of the car are starting to turn around for the better the last 2 years or so. The rotary love always comes in waves, people think they’re great and buy them. Then they don’t do the appropriate maintenance, then cry when it breaks. Then everyone avoids them until someone says they’re cool again. The rx8 has been on that uptick and sadly starting to get more expensive

It’s worth it. They might not last too much longer either. If you can find a nice cheap one from a limited run (2005 Shinka for the series 1 or R3 for the series 2) I honestly don’t even think it’ll matter if it runs in 10 years. They’ll all disappear especially at an alarmingly fast rate with the new EV craze really sinking in. People like Rob Dahm have the ability now to completely make custom parts and have an amazing love for rotary platforms. I got my ‘05 Shinka for $50. Currently runs and starts hot. Holding on average 6.5 across the entire engine. Manual transmission. Clean and extremely little rust underneath. Got it from auction in Miami. Was in an accident and needed repair. FB groups got me the rear subframe/crossmember for $100. Got all the control arms replaced for $250. A jack and stands and about two months later she was road worthy and set. Now I’m spending time and money to make her look pretty. Getting a MazdaSpeed body kit, upgraded coilovers from Bilstein for complete adjustment including stiffness. Sohn Adapter is and will always be recommended along with premixing. Gauges and watching your coolant temp is important. Once I have the upgraded radiator and thermostat and hoses it’ll be posted on the website for all to see. But. Everything so far is still less than 6k. Getting a compression tester for $75ish bucks and spending a little time to make sure it’s not completely dead can get you an insane car and even if you can’t drive it to start, instead of spending money on the cars insurance you can spend it on a place to store it. A tarp and gravel will get you what you need for quite awhile. But the true Shinka of ‘05 was supposed to be 2,500 total units. The place burned down over seas and it was stopped at 1,357. The R3 has even fewer. No matter what those will still have some sort of value in the future as long as they’re not rust filled and destroyed. I’m 20 and living with my fiancé and we’re building matching cars. She has an NC Miata Limited. It’s money draining. But it’s more then worth it and more then doable alone. You just gotta ask the right questions and have the right people answer. 30 years ago that was a death sentence to anyone who wasn’t a master mechanic, but nowadays? I hadn’t done serious work to any car that was my own ever before getting my RX-8. I rebuilt an FC RX-7’s 13b with the help of my high school teacher and fell in love with the concept of such a weird and beautiful engine that was like no other. Then with FB groups I had access to every answer I had ever wanted or needed. Never touched suspension work in my life. Never learned the name of parts or learned what they did. Now I’m maintaining my own style with a group of people who enjoy it as much as I do and who laugh at everyone who screams how bad the platform is. It makes them cheap. Parts available from local pull it yards. Everyone talks about them having a fatal flaw and they’re right. If not taken care of the car will jump off a building. But after taming the beast you will feel godlike and when you can hang with the piston lovers and do maintenance for them and then still run an engine that was banned from the 24 hour of Le Manns and driving part of literal racing history you’ll have a job everyday of your life no matter what. You can walk with one shoe and dirty clothes but proof of building and maintaining what others only see as bomb will get you any technician position you want. You can make your love your life. It’s literally all at your fingertips and with the state of the world as it is and the crash that everyone is planning for, I don’t know about you but I’ll take all the godlike happiness I can take right now. Adulting sucks. But finding happiness and self worth in knowing you can do things over 95% of the rest of the population can’t will fuel you better than some Adderall and a Baja Blast. Quite the rant I know but it’s only because I want to tell you that if you’re young you can do it no matter what! And if you’re old it doesn’t matter because being the old dog who’s still learning new tricks makes you someone that will forever earn the respect of even possible idiots like me. My father has always told me that what you do between sunrise and sunset everyday is what marks your value as a man. Idk if he got that from a movie or book that I haven’t read but I like to think that even if he didn’t create it, he lives by it. I yearn to do the same. I want to be the man who brings old metals back from the dead. I want to be the man that looks at what scares everyone else and truly burst into laughter. I want to be the man who never backs down and when I tell you that I’ve learned a lot from this car alone as to how to takes steps in those directions I hope to pass to you what has given my truly new adult life some comfort and happiness. If my day sucks I can always go relax and blow off steam finding new things to do to my car. I can go race that car around a bend so tight it’ll make virgin boys wet themselves. I can put my physical worth as a man behind the wheel of a car I will build myself and know that even if it blows up I will resurrect it with my own two hands and better then before. I can test my merit and worth daily and even in the lows, they’re higher for me when I have a purpose to work towards. This car lets me win everyday even if in the moment it kicks me in the balls. I get better. So does it. Nothing will ever be perfect. But it’s fun to see just how close I can get with something everyone else says isn’t worth the effort. Anyways! Enough of the rant😂 Goodnight!

Mazda already gave the car near everything performance wise for a NA setup. The Rx8 is basically equivalent to the brz, except with better interior IMO. This video is much better than previous RX-8 reviews, and I like the one Gels made also! But in 2024, can we please have more folks speak on the revisions and differences between the Series 1 and the Series 2? The car is old enough now that the S2 has shown the improvements to be extremely helpful. It's a shame that the RX-8 reputation is based on the 04-08 model years that had tons of issues out the factory and have since been dogged by original owners. Alex, this isn't a critique just for you, but for most non-rotaryheads that post about this car. The best mods for this car are the ones that make it more reliable. THEN you explore other options to make it a bit more fun. Honestly, though, the car is very good as-is. Many people don't understand the car because they want cars that they can throw random aftermarket parts on and think they improved it. The RX-8 is the definition of a "fix it, maintain it, and enjoy it" type car. Unless you upgrade the entire engine, everything else should be done very sparingly. I owned an '04 for 8yrs, through dumb senior HS, college and early adulthood years, and managed to keep the car running without problems. I now own an '09 S2 and it's more of the same, just with a ton of anxiety because of how badly the car gets talked about on the internet these days..

Man I've been wanting one of these for the longest time. Not sure how I feel about the rotary engine I guess I'd just have to drive one to decide if it's worth the hassle. It's the styling of the car that gets me. I know it gets a lot of crap but personally I get excited when I see them, even in their stock form I think they look great and the price-point on them makes it an obtainable side-project.

This car lives and benefits from gears! The s1 rear is like 4.44 later s2 had the 4.77 and you can go all the way up to 5.67 if you really hate fuel economy. But my god.. The torque multiplications.. 5.30 is my sweet spot on an s2 trans especially.

My cousin had a rx8 he never mix oil in the gas tank. All he did was make sure the oil was good in level. Put gas in the car and drove it. 190,000 m then he gave it to his dad and his dad crashing at 202. So maybe by taking so much care of a car this mess it up. I want one and I would trade it. Just let my cousin did no f giving and practically not knowing what you got, just another car

I love my rx8, i live in SD and it gets recognized because of the amemiya tail lights and fangs it has. But honestly the oil is prolly one thing i recommend doing alot of research on because alot of people on the forums get so anal about it. From what i have gathered is that running 10w-30 is preferable because 5w-20 is dog shit if u are running it on redline. Change filter every 2.5k miles. Oil every 5k miles. Youll be golden, what people have told me with rx8s over 200k miles with original engine
