HUGE thanks go to my wonderful student Mike Smithson for letting me film this and put it up for everyone to benefit from. You're a champion. Check out his Facebook site: / smittymotorcity
In this first installment of my VLOG, Mike and myself are discussing the importance of ear training for guitar players. We go through a bunch of ideas and exercises, that help devoloping your musical ear.

Martin, I can't thank you enough for this. I just finished a course from coursera which covers the ear training topic as well, and it has helped me amazingly. I have heard from guitarrists such as Steve Vai and Andy Timmons, through their masterclasses, the same advice you gave on this lesson. Now I truly believe this is the most important part of learning music and people should definetly pay much more attention to this. Also, your example about the differences between major and minor sounds were simply mind blowing to me. I always learned to think about them as happy or sad sounds, and it kind of works but at the same time it traps me a lot because of the reasons you explained. I really hope you continue with this vlog lessons. Thank you very much!

Hey Martin, this was very refreshing to see. I've had trouble with ear training my entire musician life and just started doing something about it. I have been doing 100 examples a day starting with m2 and M2 interval recognition (ascending, descending, and unison). I'm tracking my progress everyday and adding an interval every month. It's slow and tedious but I'm surprised at the progress I've made!

Personal takeaway: the point is not to identify intervals any old way you know how, but go through the process for every interval even if your experience tells you that that one's a perfect fourth, for example. Because some intervals are easier to hear than others, but you really want to be able to hear all of them.

There is no way Martin is going to see this, but so far two of your lesson videos have made break throughs for me, One was on speed and coming at playing fast from the top down instead of slowly building up (I can finally shred a bit) . And the other is this video, Ive known ear training was important for so long and have worked on it here and there, but this really made it clear to me I should put more time in on ear training. I ended up buying your improv master class on jtc, thanks for what you do Martin. Looking forward to making my way through the course.

Martin... fantastic lesson! the idea of listening and playing internally, without playing an instrument; I hadn't yet heard it explained in this way, and I immediately benefited from this, mere seconds after hearing it, before I even picked up my guitar. GREAT work. P.S., your session tribute band if F*&$ing AMAZING. Thank you.

its so much easier learning solos by ear because all the notes are being played individually ( most of them) or arpeggiated like you've said. When it comes to chords, even basic ones, I struggle so hard. Sometimes an idea comes up to my mind and I try to register it on the cellphone. Months later when I try to replay it, I just cant. With the hints that you've shown in this video, learning chords progression by ear and passing to the instrument an idea that is in my mind will be much easier. Thanks guys!
@MartinMillerGuitar
@MartinMillerGuitar 7 жыл бұрын
+Pietro Bernal Hey Pietro, thanks for your kind words. There's a few things about your post that I want to point out: 1. You've mentioned chord progressions, but at no point in this video we are dealing with chord progressions. How one chord or chord quality moves from one to the next is a whole different discipline. All we are doing (in the first part of the video) is identify what inversion a triad is by finding out it's root note, then it's top note and then comparing the two. 2. Learning solos by ear is a possible application for these skills but it's not really what we're going for. When transcribing solos by ear you can slow down recordings and pretty much trial & error your way through it until you have the right notes. What we're trying to achieve is to be so familiar with intervals/sounds/qualities that you don't even need to try, you just know. Just like you immediately recognize that Mike's guitar is blue. The idea is to be able to do this in real-time, so you can apply this to any musical situation, especially improvisation and interaction with other musicians.
@PietroBernal
@PietroBernal 7 жыл бұрын
Hey, thanks for answering back! Indeed you guys haven't dealt with these topics directly, but someway just by finding its root note, the quality of the interval, its inversion and stuff helps out a lot when it comes to more complex situations. It's a good way to start, specially for those who never got the chance to have a lesson like this before, like me. In the end, it's all about getting your ears educated and I see many benefits in this practice. I will start doing 15/20 minutes daily at the beginning of my study section like you've pointed out to your student. Btw, I am looking forward to seeing more videos like this Thanks a lot guys!

I found part about major/minor thirds tricking part interesting. Like If i play 1-3-6-8 that is a the major and then minor 3rd, and it is c, resolving on c, yet doesn't sound like it resolve. But then I think about it, and those notes haven't constrained C major yet (or F major), further playing a C major chord, or F major chord still doesn't constrain a Key yet.

Regarding hearing the "correct" octave: standard tuning guitar sounds an octave below the written note. The low E that is on ledger lines below the treble clef is actually the low E just below the bass clef. I had been reading guitar music for years but did not realize this until I took an orchestration course.

Guitar is often forgotten as a ‘musical instrument’. Majority of my students come in nailing their scales, but can’t create a musical idea. It’s interesting because I learned backwards, where scales came out of necessity. My first band blew up fast in college…and we didn’t have enough songs.
