Martin awesome video for ALL IFR pilots. When you got switched direct KIKKY it made me think how nervous I would have been!! The transition back to GPS knowing you had to go back to LOC for the approach! Anytime you want a Co-Pilot let me know. I will buy lunch!
@martinpauly11 ай бұрын
Thanks, Dana! And no reason to be nervous - after all, you've been training with a great instructor, so you are well prepared! 😀 In all seriousness, though: Turning me back to KIKKY after saying I'd get vectors to the final approach course should not have happened. The Opposing Bases guys have discussed this in their podcast a few times. A simple "turn left 20 degrees, intercept the localizer" would have achieved the same thing with a lot less button pushing. If you ever get into a situation like this, don't feel bad to request a heading to intercept final instead. - Martin

Thanks Martin!! I e been flying for 54 years and still actively fly my 1963 P-35 Bonanza in Monterey, California( I’m retired and still live in Delavan, Wisconsin but travel to Monterey via Southwest Airlines every month to stay with my twin brother in Monterey( he’s a retired USAF C-5 pilot). We both learned to fly at KUES and got our private pilot certificate in 1970! We both received the FAA Wright Brothers Award in 2021. We are both active CFII’s and still do instructing. Your videos and techniques are outstanding and helpful as a learning tool! Keep up the excellent and instructive work!!

Congratulations on the Wright Brothers Award - that's outstanding! Delevan, WI - do they still have the little airport there (Lake Lawn, I think) across from the resort? Back in the 1990s I went there a few times for a nice lunch. I heard the runway has deteriorated badly since then, but I haven't been back there to see for myself. - Martin
@jefferyscherer588711 ай бұрын
Yes! Lake Lawn(C59) still open.. the resort across the street is still open and thriving! The runway is a little rough but still usable. Unfortunately no instrument approach.. they used to have an NDB approach but that’s no longer there. I kept my B-19 Beech Sport at Lake lawn from 1983-1987 then bought a hangar at East Troy 57C that I still own. I bought my P-35 Bonanza in 1990 and kept it at 57C till I flew it out to Monterey with my twin brother in November of 2019. The hangar is vacant as of now. Not sure what I’ll do with it but it’s not costing me much to keep it!!

Hi Martin, thanks for another great video. Best documented IFR flights on KZbin. It‘s a pleasure to watch and learn. We can only imagine how much time it takes to put all the footage together. We didn‘t finish our IFR due to Covid and than FAA stopped the possibility to take IFR check rides outside of the USA. We didn’t realize that you still see all the approach fixes once you have loaded and activated vectors to final. On the G1000 once you have activated and loaded vectors to final, only the final approach fix was visible and if the controller gave you another fix you had to reload the approach. Great that they made this improvement on the GTN750Xi. Many greetings from Switzerland, Cornelia and Christophe
@martinpauly11 ай бұрын
Hi Cornelia and Christophe, thank you for the kind words. I try to check two boxes with my videos, entertainment and training/teaching - and from the comments it looks like this one going to St. Paul hit both of those. You are right about the waypoints leading up to the FAF, and how the GTN750 loads them (on Vectors-to-Final) even though it activates the FAF. This way, the prior waypoints are easily accessible if or when needed. The older GPS devices don't do this, and it can make things more difficult. It's a simple but very useful improvement in the GTN series. Hopefully you'll get a chance to complete your instrument training and rating one day. It's a good skill to have and a rating with a lot of utility. Greetings from Iowa where it's snowing today, though the snow is wasted on us (since we have no mountains to ski from). - Martin

❤ that switch from vectors to direct to the IF. I think we are going to see much more of that. And your comment about doing the ILS so you won't get rusty on switching made me smile.
@martinpauly11 ай бұрын
Hi Mark! I'd love to put a controller in my Bonanza and throw this scenario ("Direct KIKKI") at them, after "Expect vectors to the ILS". It might be an eye opener... The Opposing Bases guys understand this; they have often commented about this, saying once the aircraft has been told to expect headings, that's what ATC should give them. In my situation here in the video, the controller could easily have said "turn 20 degrees left, intercept the localizer", and we would have achieved the same result with a lot less button pushing (and a lot less opportunity for error). But I think you're probably right - we live in the RNAV world, so we'll likely see more and more of this kind of thing. Have a great weekend! - Martin
@midlifeflyer11 ай бұрын
@@martinpauly Yeah, it would be nice if once they announced VTF, they gave VTF. Or, as RH and AG have also said, announce vectors to the IF if that's what they are going to do. Fortunately, it's not a big deal with most GA equipment (unless you switch to VTF with a GPS that wipes out the waypoints - the reason I prefer "Activate Leg" as a more universal, cross-platform" solution). But it's a reason the scenario is in my list of special IPC tasks.

Paul, excellent video. It was a very helpful refresher so thank you! I have the a similar set up in my A36, Aspen pro and MFD, 750 Garmin and a King 200 autopilot. My Aspen has a GPSS steer button for GPS and I don't see that on your Aspen PDF. Is that something you don't have and what does the GPSS steering? Does the autopilot without having to push a GPSS key? Hope I'm making sense. Scott
@martinpauly9 ай бұрын
Hi Scott, For autopilots which are not GPS-aware, the Aspen PFD (or a similar device) translates the GPS-Steering (GPSS) data from the GPS into heading inputs for the autopilot. That way, older autopilots like your KFC-200 can benefit from GPS guidance through complex flight plans and procedures. The Garmin GFC-600 is a modern autopilot which understands the GPS natively, so GPSS is no longer necessary - the autopilot follows GPS in NAV mode just fine through a complex flight plan, holding patterns and procedure turns. Regards, Martin

Your commitment to flying like a professional pilot should be an inspiration to all aspiring pilots. The example you set is awesome! An interesting note - one of my mentors and I were talking about identifying a NAVAID aurally vs with the indication on an FMS like your GTN or a G1000. He loaded a VOR approach for training with a new owner. The G1000 identified the VOR correctly, but the couldn't get a course to come in on the HSI. When they turned on the volume for the NAVAID, voice transmissions were being made over the VOR. Of course there was a NOTAM for this, but it is interesting nonetheless. A NAVAID may identify on our system, but that doesn't necessarily mean that it is usable for our purposes.

Thanks, Andy! Glad to hear you are "allowed" to like she shirt even though it's a competitor of yours! 🤣 Not looking forward to the -20c days ahead. Yes, DA makes for great performance, but I'll take a reduced climb rate any day if I can do so in shorts and t-shirt while still feling my fingers and toes! - Martin

Competition makes GA better for all of us. I’d hate it if we had to fly 172s all the time…. The only way we get more people in the pilot’s seat is to drive prices down and make it easier to fly safely. We need more companies to embrace the competition and move the bar higher.

Thanks for taking the time to film the displays and show your interaction between the autopilot, PFD and GTN750. I appreciate all the work you did... Does the Aspen display have a CDI switch to go between GPS and LOC? I noticed you used the GTN750 CDI to switch. Most new Garmin installs on 750Txi, the CDI button is disabled so its not left in VLOC for the next new flight. Leaving auto LOC switch to connect itself just prior to the FAF. Thanks Again.

Thanks for the kind feedback. And yes, the Aspen has a switch for NAV source selection; it is the center button of the three at the bottom of the unit, between the two rotary knobs. That center button toggles between GPS1, VLOC1, GPS2, and VLOC2. So you have a choice of where you make that selection (on the Aspen or the GPS). Auto mode... my experience is it works well about 3 out of 4 times, but the confusion and rush it creates when occasionally it doesn't work as expected isn't worth the trouble. When I get vectors to the ILS, I prefer switching to VLOC manually - that way I know there won't be a surprise when I intercept final. - Martin

Ha! You got caught with vectors to final. Happened to me at TJSJ. Now I load furthest fix that makes sense just in case. I’m always learning.
@martinpauly10 ай бұрын
Hi Sean. Nobody was caught with anything. Watch that part of the video again, and you'll see that the waypoints prior to the FAF are included in the waypoint list when you activate vectors-to-final. The GTN has different behavior here from the IFD, and even from the older GNS - for exactly this kind of situation. Regards, Martin

Nice work Martin. I just got into a new aircraft (new to me) with an Aspen and a 750 so enjoy watching you as I am learning mine. Still don’t know how you run all those cameras.
@martinpauly11 ай бұрын
Thanks for the kind feedback. Regarding running the cameras... I just switch them on before startup and keep them running. In between, I am pilot in command, not camera operator. Regards, Martin

Excellent detailed video! Mason City….”The Day The Music Died.” By the way I never go to VLOC mode until I’m given my final vector clearance. Maybe that other aircraft was calling 700 as an AGL altitude.
@martinpauly11 ай бұрын
Thanks! 😎 About VLOC... I've seen too many people (myself included) forget to go VLOC in the big rush of that final approach clearance, where you get everything all at once: a heading, an altitude, and an intercept task right after - I want my avionics setup to be as ready as possible when that happens, so I don't forget anything important during this very busy time. - Martin
@aviatortrucker628511 ай бұрын
@@martinpauly Well, most of the time, or at least about 97% the GTN will switch over automatically. But that’s one of the final gumpicss checks that I do when you do gas, undercarriage, mixture, prop, instruments, carb heat, seatbelts, switches. Switches being all avionics etc. set. As you see, you never know when they might send you somewhere or you have to go missed. It’s always better to be on GPS. As a matter of fact, you can fly the ILS with your number two NAV as backup or your bearing pointer set for the localizer. Mainly I’ll use my number two unit which has a VOR localizer and glideslope within the unit. I guess personal preference then. Great video.
