This ride inspired my future when I was 9 years old. I remember every inch and note of it. It molded my childhood. Because of this ride, I'm now a pilot and a govt entrepreneur... with hobbies in space, science, and aeronautics. It's because of this ride. If I can dream it , it can do it. And I did. RIP Horizons ❤️

For those of you who never got to experience Horizons, this was the real deal. It was a long and epic experience of just pure scenery bliss. The ride system was cool, the story was well-done and the attention to detail throughout was astounding. Getting to pick your own story at the end and have a customized wall of projections played in front of you was jaw-dropping back then. I rode this only once when I was around nine or 10 way back in 1989 or so. But I will always have certain visions of this ride forever etched in my mind. Mission: Space isn't bad by any means. But it's a shame they had to tear Horizons down to build it. With all of the unfortunate changes that Epcot has endured and with more to come, it's attractions like Horizons and the original Universe of Energy and Maelstrom that will always leave lasting legacies of soul and emotion and great original storytelling.

Wow.. just watched this with my five year old.. have to say brought tears to my eyes. . Wish some rides could've stayed. Even my son said he wished he could have gone on it. These are the rides that made DISNEY stand out from all theme parks . Thanks to whoever put this video on here. You touched the Regan families heart. ..and brought back great memories.

That was a great video. Horizons was one of my favorite attractions at Epcot. I did get to ride it one last time at the very end, in December 1998 right after I graduated from college. It's a shame what's happened to Epcot. I don't think it reflects Walt's vision anymore, but rather the shareholders.

This is what EPCOT is about, not Nemo, Test Track, Ellen, And mission space. EPCOT was about human achievement and the future, not fun and games, about learning and having a blast. Disney thinks that parks cant do that, well when learning involved, i guess they disregard the old AND BETTER EPCOT. IF anybody could pull this off, id be Disney, but i think that taking out all of these classic attractions was the biggest failure Disney has ever made.
@keithdean9149

Mission Space and Test Track are great attractions but something is missing from the current EPCOT. When EPCOT Center opened people complained that it was boring, they wanted thrill rides (roller coasters) and that got louder into the '90's. They didn't want to learn on vacation, they wanted to turn off their brains and have some excitement. Disney responded, and EPCOT Park is what you have now.
@AnthonyFilms1

Keith Dean that's what makes me mad. instead of coming up with new and exciting ways to convey their ideas (Which they were plenty capable of) they give the people what they want. i know that's why the are in business but Disney is known for being different. And with EPCOT they created a masterpiece. and now they've ruined it.

Anthony Studios They have. The only thing they've kept in which is the "Old" Epcot is Spaceship Earth and Living With The Land. Everything else has been changed - World Of Motion has become Test Track 2.0, Horizons became Mission Space, the food rocks show was replaced by Soarin', Universe Of Energy became "Ellens Energy" or whatever it's called (I went in and watched a bit of the intro movie and walked right back out disgusted), Wonders Of Life has been cannibilised and holds the food and wine festival as well as the flower festival and the mexico ride has become "The Three Caballeros"...oh and Maelstrom is now gonna be a frozen themed ride.

This video was amazing! Thanks for creating and sharing. Made me sad to think of all those awesome EPCOT attractions like Horizons that are now just memories -- World of Motion, Body Wars, The original Living Seas, etc. The removal of Horizons was the beginning of the dumbing down of EPCOT. And it continues with the replacement of Maelstrom with the new Frozen attraction. I'm sure Walt is continuously rolling over in his grave over all these decisions.

I couldn't agree with you any more. This was what EPCOT was all about, education with the Disney twist. The 64/65 World's Fair left me in awe of the future. The Original EPCOT made me feel the same way.

Old Epcot seems awesome, and I understand why they took Horizons out and other stuff, just I wish there was old Epcot and New Epcot, like two separate parks that connect at international gateway. New Epcot is where imagineering can do whatever they want to the existing pavilions and old Epcot reverts back to what the pavilion was before changed (Journey Into Imagination, Universe Of Energy, World of Motion, Horizons, The Land's Attractions) just I think they should still try to educate but keep it fun like their original philosophy, like update Ellen's energy, and add some things to living with the land, not change them to be something completely different.
@usspike
@usspike 7 жыл бұрын
I agree. I feel that the rides could have been updated easily here and there to not look dated. Instead of tearing down the whole pavilions and building new, like Mission Space and Test Track. Future World started out as a scientific and learning showcase. Thrill rides like those are not cohesive with the whole Future World EPCOT concept. I also am against integrating Disney franchises and films into EPCOT attractions, such as the Living Seas is now with Nemo and they've managed to turn Maelstrom into a Frozen ride. Balance the education and entertainment elements like it was in the 80's.

Although this video is an incredible memento from this ride, it doesn't hold a candle to the actual ride experience. It's impossible to capture the sensations, smells, and stunning visuals of the real ride. The two 80' OMNIMAX screens (well before Soarin's time, with superior implementation), the massive sets, the animatronics, the lighting, the detailed scenery that pulled everything together throughout the ride, the surround sound fed via infrared into each car (well before surround sound).

Fun little fact: the footage from the different destinations you could select at the end of the ride still survives at Tokyo Disneyland. As you exit Star Tours, they have a little area with video screens that houses this footage. Thought it was a really neat little tribute to Horizons. My brother pointed it out, and I totally flipped out, lol.

I drove home to NW Arkansas to have an early Christmas with family December of 1972, and then "hit the road" toward Central Florida. A buddy of mine was born and raised in Clermont, and his parents graciously let me board with them when I first arrived in Central Florida. I went out to Disney employment the next day and secured a job in "Water Craft" (piloting the "Ferry boats, hotel launches, and the World Cruse Boat") which functioned without the need for "tracks".

It's NOTHING what it used to be. I couldn't understand why I felt sad there. I thought it was because I was older, but now I realize it's because it's changed for the worst. It's lost is special uniqueness that made it so innovative and special. I don't care to go back to EPCOT.

Dear Fellow (perhaps long ago) Disney World employee, I want to thank you for a "portal" into the past that no longer exists. My late best friend/wife "Joy" worked at Disney back in the ancient of days (1971 - 1973). Joy moved down from Michigan and was working behind the scenes tagging merchandise in the warehouses before the Magic Kingdom opened in October of 1971. I was still on active duty in the Navy, but relocated to central Florida shortly after I received my Honorable discharge.

It's funny, one of the biggest complaints Disney had about EPCOT when it opened was that it was "boring," there were no thrill rides. That was one of the reasons Body Wars was created, to be EPCOT's first thrill ride. Now, we are beginning to see what was lost when those attractions were closed. Disney called it "edutainment" but apparently too many people do not want to learn while of vacation.

Maybe some kind of entirely spaced theme building. Not just a building, but maybe a space station. What living in space would be like. How transportation from station to station to earth would be like, something that can really show what our future could be like. Livable space stations. I'm really just coming up with this. But they do need a ride that can hold peoples' attention span for more than 10 minutes.

there is a rumor (just a rumor) that Disney is going could close down autotopia in tomorrowland. Horizons could be a near perfect fit for that spot.

This is Disney at it's best when designing attractions. Horizons was a grand view of the future, and still is.

I am working on "incredible things" that Joy and I had started out on about 4 years ago. I will be launching a "funding campaign" to help me keep going on our "dream" until I take my "last breath" and wake up to see her once again - never to be separated again for Eternity. Touch base with me, if this resonates with you. Best Regards, William Wright Thanks again for giving me "something" that gives me "fond memories of my life with Joy on the Disney property.

They were the films in the middle of the ride...the DNA animation, shuttle launch etc. Because of the design of the ride vehicles, you couldn't see the ground and room surroundings like in Soarin', just screen.

Joy and I "found" each other less than 6 months later in our "common" break room and "one date" and "a week later" I asked her to marry me! So much we had in "common" discussed on that first date, it was inevitable that we were brought together. Too many corollaries to discuss here that brought our 38+ year marriage into reality. I, sadly, lost her to "late stage Uterine cancer on May 2nd, 2011 at 4:34 AM, as I held her hand in a Hospice center in Winter Park, FL while she took her last breath.

Martin thanks for your work.... it was a time when EPCOT was new and amazing, is strange how they created something as good as world of motion and Horizons and then took them down, even the great Energy Ride is different now, this rides where grand and amazing, it seem now they just building 3 minute rides like the Seven Dwarfs Mine Train and JUNK like the little mermaid (doesn't even have water), I guess Disney doesn't like orlando that much and prefers to build amazing stuff elsewere like Radiator Springs Racers (California), Mystic Manor (Hong Kong) and the new pirates (Shanghai), why couldn't they give us a pixar land instead of a toy story ? anyway great video, God bless the 80's
