There's a funny story this song always reminds me of. A while ago, I was really into this girl. We went on a date, I'd cook for her and then we'd watch a movie, all at my place. I thought: every girl loves John Mayer, so if I'd play a John Mayer song for her, she'd probably be impressed. I started to study this song, I didn't know it was so hard to play. After six hours of non-stop studying, I finally got it right. I was pretty nervous when I played it, but it went perfect. At the end, she said: I appreciate it, but I really don't like John Mayer. 😅

It's easier than you think! With western scales you're more likely to hit a "right" note than a "wrong" one, so don't worry too much about which frets to add over a bar chord: just finger the bar chord then try hammeron/pulloff of any fret you can reach! Getting the pinky finger strong enough to flick strings while fingering the chords is the hardest part, and for that it doesn't matter how it sounds. Just start building up that pinky strength and you're well on your way to "embellishments over bar chords" town.

That claw technique (with the thumb on the bass note) is essential for almost any JM song. Then... you will be able to play more of those Hendrix/SRV tunes as well. It took me a while to start feeling comfortable with it. I was always a clunky power chord player until I realized that this claw technique would allow me to play lead/rhythm so much easier. Highly recommend converting to it if you feel like your guitar playing has plateaued.

First of all: Thank you for the great tutorial Marty. Here is an easier version on how to play the song, with less usage of the left thumb. It does not change any notes you play, but for me it is a lot easier to play it like this. So here are a few tips: In the beginning you can slide right into the C#m with in an regular bar chord shape. When you play the little walk down: just play it on the d and g side. So after the slide you play: 11th fr. d and 9th fr. g, then 9th fr. d and 8th fr. g, then both 6th fr., lastly both on the 4th fret. This is way easier and you end right in the position where you want to end for the next part. In this part you can play the open a string instead of using your thumb on the 5th fret of the e string. This way to avoid playing with your thumb can also be used later in the second part of the main riff. Lastly just a little idea: At the end of the riff you could finish with an a-shaped e chord with base note on the 7th fret of the a string. This makes transitioning to the beginning of the riff easier and if you want you could spice it up with the high tone on the e string. Nevertheless being able to play chords and riffs with your thumb on your top strings is useful, so you should consider practicing it.

I'm so glad you taught this one!! It has a great melody to it and It's fun to solo over. I'm going to start out more beginner style, then add in the Hendrix'y stuff as I get more comfortable. If people are struggling to get that beginning part where marty goes from pick to finger picking- i know it’s hard for me to tuck the pick away and get it back without fumbling it- you can keep the pick and instead of finger picking- pick the fatter string with the pick while at the same time using your middle finger to pluck the next string. Sort of an intro to hybrid picking. It’s actually really easy to practice picking one string with you pick while plucking the next string under it with your middle finger. What helps me is to set your middle fingertip against the string for a second before you pluck it. Now when you are trying to play triads you can add your ring finger to the next string as well, and pluck all 3 strings of a triad at the same time. It sounds a lot better than strumming down 3 strings for a triad, because triads work best when the 3 notes are played at the same time. Btw thanks Marty, and I know you know this stuff- just putting it out there for those who don’t

@ 11:33 I would recommend for my large handed friends like myself that you use your index and ring for the 12 14, then transition to middle and ring for the slide. I struggled unnecessarily for too long using the John Mayer way that you are teaching. But do what is most comfortable.

What an awesome tune. And a super helpful lesson - as always. Thank you so much, Marty! For you fellow beginner-to-intermediates out there who, like me, struggle to switch between pick and fingers: try hybrid picking that intro part. So, pick on the low E and finger(s) on the higher strings. Still sounds sweet, but is a lot easier to manage imo. Peace n love to all of you.
