I have played acoustic guitar for like 10 years and was always intimidated by fingerstyle, even though I'm a drummer so the concept of playing 2 separate rythyms with 2 hands isnt new, but once I actually just prsciticed this the exact way he showed, starting just real slow and gradually getting faster until its more fluid its like muscle memory now. Just don't let what hes doing with his chord hand with the chord changes and hammer ons get you and just focus on the finger work until it becomes like a pattern your hand will just start doing on its own after just consisting with it.

Hi Marty. Great video man!!! AS a blind guitar player this lesson is very useful. So many guitar lessons on youtube say things like as you can see in the video you do so and so, or put your fingers in a certain way. I really like that you tell exactly which string and which finger you should use for the different patterns. I've always been a huge fan of doc watson. I can see how much fun you could have once a pattern that you teach in this video could be easily moved from chord to chord. I know I will have a lot of fun with this video and learning how to finger pick.

I got my guitar about a month ago for two reasons. One: I’ve always wanted to play a musical instrument. Two: As a disabled veteran, I thought it might be a possible therapy to help deal mentally with my pai. However, I have struggled with cord transitions, painful fingers, and strumming patterns. To the point that the guitar was necessary practice rather than enjoyment. This video change that for me last night. It was really the first time I felt as though I was playing music. not any particular song, mind you, but, music all the same. It helped. I’m posting this so that it might help others as well.

Gail Valente I found that you have to curve your index finger. Don’t keep it pointed, look up a video on how to properly hold the pick, cause I had the same issue for awhile til I noticed that I wasn’t holding the pick correctly. Best of luck!
@joshuahendrickson48544 жыл бұрын
Hi Gail. I'd recommend first not trying to strum with a pick. The reason why you say your strumming is "crap" is that you probably aren't pressing hard enough on the strings to get a good clear sound. Make the c Chord with your left hand and really press hard on the strings until your fingers are pressing against the fret board. Then with your wright thumb begin slowly to strum down from the fifth string. Make sure that each note sounds out good, loud, and clear. Keep practicing with other chords. I know you can do it. Good luck. Once you can play the cords with your fingers, then you can go back to using a pick. I don't play with a pick. However, I'd recommend making sure you have a good grip with the pick. Maybe a thumb pick would work better for you then straight picks.

I am now heading into sixty ..40 years later I'm back at it and got a few lesson from a professional and can play several songs to go with my singing.... long story short all the finger picking sites that I have viewed that say they are for beginners,,, are not for beginners ..however that being said I think your lesson is.. and quite do-able.. because you keep it simple and move slowly... you have inspired me to work towards picking rather than just strumming.. Hi Anna. Just keep practicing your chords. If it only hurts a little, kind of work through the pain and keep practicing. That's the only way of getting better. Once you can successfully play the chords, then you will really get good fast. Also, look at practicing as something fun, not a chore as something I have to do. When I pick up my guitar and begin to play it isn't long before I'm very relaxed and enjoying seeing what sounds I can get out of my instrument. Good luck.

Fyi, the proper technique for playing the high strings is to play the G string with the index finger, the B string with your middle finger, and the E string with your ring finger. You want to get in the habit of playing that high E string with your ring finger and not your middle finger. So when Marty tells you to play the E string with your middle finger you should actually be playing it with your ring finger. Other than that mistake the content in this video is quite good.

One month into Guitar… Hey my fingers hurt. It’s not that fun to practice Teacher: guitar is all about fun. Just have fun Three months into guitar: i’m having fun but not seeing much progress since the first month or so. Teacher: no the guitar is about work. You’ve got to work hard and find a way to like pain ! 🤔 trying to find a balance here

Honestly, I did give up for a while before finally picking the guitar back up again. It's been a few weeks and I've learnt 3 simple songs so far, penny royal tea by nirvana, about a girl by nirvana and fake plastic trees by radiohead. It honestly shocked me how fast I learnt how to play them, when I literally hadn't played guitar for a few months and never really learnt anything before that. You just gotta find a way to pull through it :)

the pain will go away if you keep practising! over time you will build up calluses on your fingers and it won't hurt nearly as much

Thanks Marty. I am just beginning to learn finger style, so I would like to see some simple popular songs. I am using the Travis picking style which includes the ring finger. Thank you.

No sh** Marty. I think you're the best and your humor is hilarious. I'll never forget that comment you made about 110% of all AC/DC songs were 2 power chords. LOL!!! I've been learning for nearly a year. You make it super fun to learn and play! Thank you!

Hi Marty, I am really enjoying your videos, just wish I had picked up the guitar when I was younger, I hit the big half century last year,and only have one pal who plays,but it's hard to get together with life commitments,I don't know if I am getting good, just wish I had like minded people to play along with in real life,the joys of tinnitus have made me very reclusive to humanity at times,but I persevere and I am happy to hear a tune slowly come together from my Chinese acoustic Fender,she has a lovely sound,I now have five guitars,one electric,one classical,and three acoustic guitars,I am planning to buy a really good semi acoustic,all my guitars were purchased second hand, and I cleaned and restrung them myself,all thanks to KZbin videos lol,I am so glad I picked up the guitar,it has given me a new outlook on life,thanks again Marty .

Broken down into steps like that really helps. I get frustrated in that I play the pattern a dozen or more times right then it all falls apart. I guess more practice until it becomes ingrained. Great lesson. Thanks Marty!

Great lesson, have been following your strumming videos for beginners and thought to try finger picking. This lesson really jump started my finger picking playing. Suggestion: for the first several practice sessions I did not place my fret hand on the guitar, just concentrated on the finger picking sequence. For me that made learning the sequence easier and quicker. Thanks for your lessons, a 63 year old (me) is learning to play guitar.

I'm just starting to play and this is a really cool way to practice your fingerpicking and cord transitions at the same time. Way better than just simple strumming.
