I'm a 67 year old woman with neck issues and I'm doing well with this farm. I think the biggest issue for me is arthritic fingers trying to undo the clips to release the compost tray. But otherwise, wonderful. I could never get my head around the multiple tray farms and found them considerably harder work. Many thanks for these tips.

Awesome tips! I just assembled my Hungry Bin today. BTW: I've got a couple of other worm farms and got the Hungry Bin to make it easier to compost. I also have those darned painful and persistent neck and low back problems. It's a good point to share that info. So, I'm going to set the Hungry Bin on a slightly raised platform that will still allow me to roll it off of there should I have to move it.

I'm considering this or the Urbalive worm farm for a single-dwelling apartment. Thanks for making your video. I like 'long term experience' videos and hearing you say it's probably best for a large family tips me back towards the smaller urbalive, even if that some seems to need more active maintenance.

Glad to help,,a tiered farm would probably be best for your purposes

Awesome video on the hungry bin. I too find that it does get compacted at the bottom and not much in the compost tray. I generally just try to loosen the material at the bottom and even just sift out compost from the the top . You’re right about certain types of material so now I’m trialling the egg carton trays in there throughout too
@martysgarden3 жыл бұрын
Hi Candy. Thanks for sharing your experience. I am finding the farm a bit easier to work with using lighter materials. Some manure ontop of the cartons seems to work really well too! I am currently trialing this at the moment.

at 73 I found it too difficult to get down to remove the castings and did find that the contents did compost tossed it and went back to my 1/2 large barrels, emptying from the top is easier. I scoop out the mix and leave it an a 20 cm deep tray for a day uncovered. the worms migrate down and leaves just castings on the top. Repeat the process until bin is empty putting worm into my number 2 barrel

Marty, I have a hungry bin. The level of the bedding is getting low and there is less room to for the worms to expand. What is the best method for adding bedding (and what is the best bedding)? What if there is still a food layer that is on the current surface? Do I need to remove that food layer before adding bedding? Let's say the top of the of the compost and worms were about 18 inches from the top. What would you add to bring it up to the proper level? Thanks!

I reckon it would work better for moving around if the hinge was on the opposite side than the wheels. That way you could move it against a wall with wheels at the front, hinge at the back. Easy to open the lid and easier to move away from wall.
@martysgarden Жыл бұрын
Yes, it needs a few modifications for sure.
@pmd7914 Жыл бұрын
@@martysgarden I just picked one up secondhand. Removed the top hopper & just rotated it 180 degrees. As you know, the hinge & handle is one, still think it will be easier. This is the next worm farming adventure for me. Have a six level (plus sump) Reln Worm Factory which I've had continuously for over 20 years. Use it as a nursery to introduce worms to the garden.

Any issues with the open drip tray design? We live in an area with a hotter (not tropical) climate and I'm worried about attracting flies/smells and/or the tray drying up in the summer months. We do hit daily max temps in the mid 30ºCs for a lot of the summer so I'm guessing finding a shaded corner will be a must.
@martysgarden Жыл бұрын
Yes, needs shade. Open system would be better. Check out my biggest worm farm eva system on my channel

Would having three sets of the worm cafe get the same volume as the hungry bin. Given the price. I can get three worm cafes, which equals..x 9 working trays to one bin...will the bin still be more value for money?
@martysgarden Жыл бұрын
The Hungry Bin is better made and will last much longer. But 3 tiered farms would be more productive
@KoalaGardens3 жыл бұрын
That was a great review Marty - I had wondered about these purely from watching some of your videos here. I know for sure it's not for me because I have both neck and knee issues and can see getting that tray off would be a pain! I really like the concept and features of it though. Out of interest - what is the maximum number of levels you would put on the tumbleweed worm cafe style of worm farm? I'm wondering if I should add another layer (I have 3 trays and the base tray), or start another farm.
@martysgarden3 жыл бұрын
I would start another farm, 3 would be the max for sure. 😀

Won't tiger worms die once put in the garden?
@martysgarden3 жыл бұрын
If you have a lot of compost and mulch they can survive. I find them in my garden all the time. There also needs to be a good formation of humus.
