Marty, concrete trucks from that era had a separate diesel motor to spin the drum in whatever direction was required. This allowed the truck motor to devote full power to moving the machine. Nowadays, concrete trucks have only one diesel motor that powers everything on the rig.

A bit late to the party, but.....a 3D resin printer will give you the smooth finish you need for the drum, or, if you need several, make one good one and make a silicone mold and then you can cast as many as you want using casting resin. Keep up the good work, Marty, seeing these brings back memories.

Hi Marty, I've been quietly watching your makeovers for some time now and enjoy them immensely. One thing I noted is you use the Tamiya thinner for cleaning the airbrush. IPA (IsoPropyl Alcoholl) works extremely well as a thinner for Tamiya paints so great for cleaning your airbrush and bought from the right source is far cheaper than the thinner. I can't say if it will play well with Mr Color or similar acrylic brands (for example, Vallejo doesn't like it). Cheers and keep up the great and interesting work!

A method of getting smoothed-out prints is to use something which fills it in a bit - for very small imperfections, a coat of gesso paint works well. Or you can smear on some filler of some kind. A bit of sanding and it works well - especially for a nice, smooth, rounded shape like the cement barrel.

Hi Marty, I drove a concrete mixer here in the States. Not sure what all the levers are on that model, but ours had two levers in the back. One was to control the RPM of the diesel engine and the other was to control the RPM of the drum. The drum (looking at it from the back of the truck, spins clockwise to mix the concrete and counter clockwise to dispatch the concrete) There are two fins inside the drum that run from the front of the drum to the rear of the drum in a corkscrew pattern and they are known as a Archimedean screw. We also had two toggle switches, one controlled the hydraulic cylinder on the chute to raise it up and down and the other controlled a lock to lock the chute in position. All of our mixes were hydraulic and the pump was attached to the front of the diesel engine crankshaft. The hydraulic motor was coupled directly to the front of the drum. Not sure were the water tank is on your model, but all of our mixers had 300 gallon water tanks, as the company I worked for dry dispatched the concrete and it was mixed on site per the customers request. Plus the water was used to rinse in the drum and wash off the chutes after delivering the concrete. Another great make over Marty and thank you for sharing the video. Cheers, Rich S.
@railtrolley9 ай бұрын
The hydraulic drive for the barrel is the biggest change I've noticed in newer Agitators. The Australian name for this truck type. The earlier types had the box behind the cab, like the Matchbox video version. This housed a straight 6 car engine, to drive the barrel. With the hydraulic motor now used, and the chassis generally kept the same length on the 4 axle twin steer, there is a big air gap between the cab and the barrel. 4 axle agitators are the most common version. The Mack Trident series conventional is popular, and unlike the Australian car industry, they are still locally manufactured. Along with Volvo, Kenworth, and Iveco (International).

3D prints can be sanded with increasing grades of sandpaper to remove the layer lines. Usually, you start with 120 but here I would suggest 220 and progressing to 400 and finally 800. You can finish with Emory paper. Then prime and paint normally.

@27:29 Using a floor polish product as a gloss coat, and to make clear parts absolutely clear, is an old-school trick many scale modelers use, too. I use Future from SC Johnson for dipping canopies and other clear bits; for gloss-coating before applying decals (the acrylic gloss coat fills the tiny pits in a surface, which trap air and cause silvering on clear decal film); as a sealer when weathering a model; and as a final gloss coat on my toy soldiers. Future was discontinued a couple years ago, but Quick Shine looks like it works the same. These household products are cheaper by volume than gloss coat products from the model suppliers like Tamiya, Vallejo, AK, etc.
