Fixing a worn out 8x8 Argo and testing it in the ocean.

My friend got hold of this 8wd Argo Amphibious ATV, it has been used in the salt water since new. It has worn out chains, bearings, seals, corrosion damage and some other issues so we spent a few days fixing it up then headed down the beach to test it out.

Well, technically speaking, as long as he wears the highest and best quality eye protection, he could buy the absolutely illegal fleabay special ones. They ain't cheap, but they ain't expensive either. As long as he cools it down properly, they do work as rust removing lasers, it's just that they're incredibly hacky and dangerous to your eyesight, because more often than not, they're super powerful to compensate for lack of proper software.

I'm not sure but I think those lines running down the outside will be connected to a central grease pump so you can do all axles at once. It would make sense with 8 axles.

My mate had one years ago, I brought it to the set of Saving Private Ryan during filming. Brought a camera man out to sea and back in up those big dunes , nowhere that machine couldn’t go because I tried ever obstacle and gradient. Reliant Robin engine in that one and a pig for shearing sprocket pins. Regards from Ireland.

You definitely make a lifestyle choice living way out in the Sounds from a medical emergency point of view, and it's ironic that so many of the people who make that choice are elderly and retired and most likely to have such an emergency. The Westpac Helicopter makes up for the distance I guess. It would surely be quicker to get taken to hospital by helicopter from D'urville, than by ambulance to Nelson or Wairau from Rai Valley. Glad your wee lad is OK. He's great value when he appears in your videos and a proper hard case.

There is something really satisfying about fixing old or plainly worn things. I would guess that quite a few people watching this type of content don't know much about mechanics and are just watching to be entertained. But I'm pretty sure that it: - is an inspiration to work on stuff - helps to remember that many broken things can be fixed with simple things, instead of buying something new - shows that new things can be made from recycled materials - and that it teaches people that a lot of repairs are not witchcraft, but rather just simple trial and error or looking for clues. (most of the time....) Remember that Right to Repair should be a RIGHT. Not a little bonus when buying something! Thanks for the amazing content and the things you do for people! Thanks to you, I want to get some old/not working tractor (or similar) to try and fix! :) - cheers

As a non-mechanic, I find I’m more careful and thoughtful when I’m fixing something up ( like an old lawnmower), and probably not in such a rush just to ‘Fix the bloody thing’. I've owned three of these in the past , used to use them to collect shot deer off of the hills and forests . There weren't many places they wouldn't go . Always wanted one as new as your one , mine were all older models , Argo Conquest. Maintenance was never ending on them , lots of bearing changes and oil changes.

The avengers were far better. I remember those Kawasaki engines would whine away. We used them in the north of England where the weather is best described as wet and on the conquest the chains would be immediately submerged in water.raining in so you were constantly oiling and chasing the water out.

Yes lots of little maintenance on those things especially if you take them in the water. And I got mine the bearings were basically cooked in it it's all rusty so I replaced the bearings with high speed sealed machine bearings actually intended for the CNC machine and yeah I paid quite a bit for them but in the long run they last 10 times longer than standard bearings pay the money up front you won't have to constantly replace them and when it came to the change I got actually have like roller bearings needle bearings in each one they were very very expensive but they're really smooth and they last way longer than a standard chain.

I was working with a guy who got superglue in his eye. At the time he was alone in the workshop. He instinctively rubbed his eye and bonded his finger to the eyelid ! In that state he managed to get himself to the outpatients an have himself unstuck. We never let him forget that one. ! Interesting fix there. I remember as a young man making gaskets very often.

I'm sure you know this Marty, so purely to feed your algorithm or maybe teach others - Submersion in ordinary White Vinegar is an incredible rust remover especially when you have more time than money. White Vinegar is a dilution of acetic acid and when it comes into contact with ferrous (iron) oxide it converts it to ferrous acetate (a salt) and hydrogen. What this will look like is the rust just falling off into flecks while small bubbles come off your item. At the end you are left with an item that is only the good steel or iron. Parts that were oxidized together will now be separate. Fasteners that seemed like trash will now have clean threads that can be spun be hand. Of course there are some caveats. 1. This process takes a long time, probably at least one to two weeks (maybe more) depending on the level of oxidation. 2. The item must be kept completely submerged in the vinegar away from oxygen. 3. The item must be clean of oils, etc. that would inhibit the vinegar from getting into the oxidation. 4.The process is not complete until your item has been submerged in a neutralizing bath of a base solution (like baking soda water) for at least half the amount of time of the original vinegar bath . During this bath the surface layer of your item will darken because of a thin black oxide layer. Porous metals like cast iron will need to neutralize longer then less porous metals. If you do not neutralize bath your item it will flash rust in front of your eyes as the oxygen in the air reacts with all the nice fresh iron you have exposed. 5. You will only be left with whatever good iron/steel you had to start with. Small delicate parts that are oxidized may not have enough good metal to survive intact. Watching your videos, Marty, has given me the thought that a vinegar submersion in an ultrasonic cleaner could add to the reaction since it should gently agitate the item to encourage the weakened rust to fall so that the solution can get into where it still needs to work. Thanks for the content Marty. Really enjoy the feeling of just hanging out while you work on something.

OMG this brings back nightmares of maintaining a couple of Argo Conquests used commercially in an 'Overloaded State' mowing and spraying herbicide in salt mashes to control invasive phragmites vegetation. My best advice on using an Argo in salt water is DON'T DO IT! We had the added pleasure of dealing with them using tracks. Ultimately that thin frame will fail due to corrosion especially where the chain tensioners mount. Oh yea they aren't a boat and your outboard motor is mounted too high. Make sure the bilge pumps are operational, oversize them when replacing, and make sure the hull is kept clean from debris which will block the bilge pump. We didn't float ours often but when we did we used 55 gallon drums strapped on the front & back for additional floatation and side towed them with a 20' boat white knuckle all the way hoping not to have a boat come by us and swamp the Argo with its wake. The day we ran out of unobtainable transmission cases was the best day of my life. Do you want to make an offer on 2 of them and I'll fill the hulls with all the spare parts including some bulletproof axles we custom made?

Very cool ... wanted one since childhood watching the Cartoon "Johnny Quest" !!! LOL You're outboard is too high ... shouldn't hear the exhaust and you're loosing thrust as well. Might want to invest 20 AUD in a bilge pump ... not leaking now but if you ever spring a leak out in the Ocean, you'll have the safety feature of being able to pump as you make your way back to shore.

We used to have an Argo (mid 80s) that was used for Deer stalking in the Scottish Highlands. Great wee fun vehicle but it was noisy and uncomfortable as hell - and those drive chains kept snapping - jeesh! Best of luck with it.

Hi Marty. Love your shows! I remember riding in the Argo 22 years ago at Cable Bay Adventures when my "kids" took me to celebrate my 60th birthday! We also had races on quad bikes, but the main memory was driving on the Argo through unspoiled native forest and looking out to Delaware Bay. It brought back happy memories to see you on the causeway to Pepin. Having seen you deal to a wasp nest in the Sounds, and having had a section in Penzance Bay, I think you have to seriously think of using poison bait to reduce the risk of further wasp nests and Allergic Reactions. The Sounds are no place to be with Anaphylaxis Reactions. One of your correspondents is quite right, make sure you have Epipen injections in the house, car and boat!

Marty t one of the most interesting channels on KZbin I have yet to see anything that he hasn't been able to fix or that he is afraid to take apart to fix. I learned a long time ago make sure that when you're taking it apart you document where each piece goes are you could be just guessing at the end. Great video Marty

I use motorbike chain lube on mine out of a spray can , just spray them when you are driving in the water so it covers the whole lot, works a treat 👌 another great video mate 👍
