Enjoyed this one especially the drone footage at the end.I had a wasp nest in the eave of my cape cod style dormer. Had the brilliant idea to open the upstairs window and use a broom to knock down the nest. Picture an old fat man running out of the bedroom down over the stairs with a swarm of wasps in hot pursuit only to run out the front door into the rest of the hive executing a military precision flanking movement.

When I was in my early teens, a friends dad had a slasher just like that. He got a molded plastic school chair, cut the front two legs off, welded an axle and wheels to the back two with a draw bar to the slasher. That was his ride on to cut the long grass at the back of their small acreage. Control the slasher with one hand and a beer in the other.

Marty there are people here in Northern Canada who would pay good money to be stung by a Bee right now. My lawn mower is parked, I won't be needing it for another 4-5 months, it's minus 10 C and snow is up to the door handles on the car. Oh how I envy you right now. The Bush Hog looks and works great, good sensible approach to the repair. Got to admire any man who can stop what he is doing for 2 minutes just to make his little boy laugh and smile. Watched a couple of times, still trying to get my head around the cutting edge being higher than the trailing edge... Got a similar project in hand here in oz, a bit smaller but similar in all respects. Love the old walk behind slashers - way capable but probably rougher and noisier than any modern versions. I doubt anyone will restore a modern mower in 50 years time, nothing like the quality of materials nor the build philosophy of making things repairable...

Hi Marty,I rescued 2 of these mowers, used 1 for parts.I cut up a truck mud flap to cover the side throw, now it leaves a nice row of grass next to the mower as I go clockwise around my lawn tennis court I end up with only 1 row of clippings to rack up! Yours is missing the belt tensioner and cover plate on the top. The manufacturer was IBL in Petone.

The way I've always seen is the top bearing on the blade shaft is always sealed since the grease you pump into the cavity will always migrate down and the top bearing will starve for grease if it's not sealed up. The bottom bearing should have it's top seal removed, leaving the bottom seal intact. Should use steel-sealed bearings instead of rubber/plastic so the pressure of the grease is less likely to push the steel sleeves out of place than the rubber/plastic. That's the way it is on my John Deere riding mower spindle assemblies.
