A subtle detail in that scene that many may overlook was how Maru was handling things with Robin. Typically when up against foes, he'd end fights as quick and decisively as possible. But here, the boy had Robin with his back to the wall and kept pushing him back there if he attempted to flee and did so without even making any direct eye contact. The act of rape is about the suspect forcing themselves upon their unwilling victim. Knowing Robin was no match for him physically, Maru was toying with the man to show how helpless he was against him in the same way he forced himself onto Kiruko before beating him to a bloody pulp.

Most good story about the punisher will explore that he is a broken man who can only keep doing this anymore, those who try to show him fullfilled and happy in his mission are missing the point. And yeah the reason why japan do that is because unlike america who still mostly think of war as a cool and badass way to bring justice, many people in japan saw the damage of war on themselves, but also saw what can happen when a whole nation starts to normalise and justify murder, and it wasn't pretty. This part of the story was more hard to watch (not bc the writers did a bad job it's the opposite) than the rape honestly. Bc it's was very accurate. The fact she could have escaped from the ropes but she was numb inside but didn't wake up basically until she had wake up call (Maru) had me crying. When she told Maru to stop and not kill him bc it seems there was still a piece of her who cared for this asshole and finally after going through the emotions and realizing this asshat isn't worth it and ripped his picture was so so real. When a person is assaulted by someone they loved and cared for the mental hurdles to just tell yourself, "yes this person did this," whether it's sexual assult, physical, emotional etc it's hard to accept that to yourself.

It's pretty satisfying to see someone who forced himself onto others get manhandled like a child, completely helpless to run away or stop Maru. The sound design is interesting too. When Maru throws him into the wall you can feel the impact as if it was a real person and can imagine how much it hurt, then when he actually starts hitting Robin the punches feel so weighty, like he's genuinely going to cave his head in with them if he keeps going. There's just a brutality to it that's both satisfying and a bit worrying for Maru's sake.

Kiruko grew up with this trash he was like father/brother figure to him in short they are like family, he was one of the reasons why kiruko wanted to live hoping that there is still someone left in the orphanage. But she was betrayed in the worst unexpected way, it was confusing to her mentally and emotionally to the point that it fks her brain up, after that horrible incident she hated him, but not emotionally ready to get that trash killed. In this episode we learn that she was soft and maru is the one who protects all along.

He simply listened to Haruki cuz for that moment, she was weak and pleading and he didn't want to hurt her even more by going against her. From Haruki's perspective, she knows killing people affects Maru negatively (like when he had to kill the girl and Dr. Usami) so she didn't want to have his hands be dirtied by Robin's blood. I'm grateful to Tengoku Daimakyou because it motivated me to look for more info about the different types of attitude that a person who has been victim of the same as Kiruko can have and wow... the truth is that nobody close to me has ever suffered something like that, so I'm a complete ignorant about that topic, but after studying a bit about it, I understand much better the different reactions of Kiruko and the emotional bond she has with Robin. The way the author handles the subject is not perfect and especially in the final part it's a bit anticlimactic, but the scene of Kiruko stopping Maru now makes more sense to me than before.

The thing is, it's probably not even about Maru, Kiruko is a mess, psychologically and now physically too, not only does she have to deal with the fact that she doesn't know if it's him or her, but now she has to deal with the fact that her hero has done to her what he has done to her. What happens is that she has this mix of emotions of the most important person in her life doing something so horrible to her and not knowing what to do, in fact Kiruko staying in bed, seems to be a symptom of surrender and submission, which is terrible, a person in that context, having surrendered, why would she untie herself even if she could?

Not only would it confirm that he is a killer in his own mind (going back to episode 8) it could stir up some major mental problems with how far he’ll go with loving Kiruko. Now that he is more collected, I see no issue with killing Robin since he didn’t relinquish to his anger in the moment. Meaning he’ll likely have no regret after the deed. Additionally now we now that he isn’t a killer, he’s a defender who will get revenge on a horrible person with much thought. A defender who can grow and evolve. Since I imagine murder in the moment would’ve taken a massive toll on his mindset and actions.

Kiru's been through some shit from almost being eaten by a maneatear to the brain transplant to losing her family and friends. The show consistently highlights her attempts to put on a brave facade, like her reaction to the death of the innkeeper. Moving forward and focusing more on her mission with Maru is more of a coping mechanism. Lastly people react to SA differently especially in scenarios involving someone they were close to, there's no universal response to these kinda things. Personally I don't want Kiru to be sulking forever she needs to move on, having a complete 180 for their character so suddenly isn't even realistic.

If you think about it, It makes sence for Kiruko to stop Maru from killing him. Its not a rational decision, but thats the point because Kiruko was just traumatized. She just experienced getting raped by someone she feels strong attachement to and idolizes for a long time. She will experience a lot of conflicting emotions and she will be confused and be in denial as well. She will react irrationally, which is normal for people with post traumatic stress. No human being would ever be rational after experiencing trauma. Its the same thing in abusive relationships. Many victims still experience feelings of love and grief towards their abusive spouse when they die or separate. Its not a rational, but it happens. Trauma will leave people in a state of confusion.
