Chibana is exactly the man who injured Maruyama at the 2013 Tokyo Grand Slam. He withdrew from that fight, specifically because of a knee injury. Therefore, it cannot be considered a loss.

Nice! Always rewarding when you can find a way to not talk about uchi mata when making a judo video :D There's always so much more to the guys who are known for their uchi mata, because it gets the main focus from everyone. Interesting perspective. Even if you don't have the shiny medal, you might still be the top dog. Like being able to win against everyone consistently is a show of more than being able to win some people once. Not to say that Hifumi Abe wasn't able to do that, but it's interesting how much you can be limited by circumstances in terms of never being an Olympic champion while being the best. Beating Lima in that fashion is wild, having seen how extremely passive judo he plays. Another interesting point to me is how often people do newaza against Vieru compared to their normal strategy. It's just an impression but I watched Saha also almost catch him in newaza in the Olympics. But then again it looks like many times Maruyama is not just pretending to try newaza in these clips, he actually goes in with the intention to win the match if he manages to get an angle.

Don't hold your breath. The Olympic committee sells broadcasting rights (probably to the highest bidder) and is very aggressive in protecting that right. Put an unauthorized video of an event and see how fast it gets taken down.

He is an amazing judoka. He has my respect. But you have to be in it to win it. So I would never call him an Olympic Champion. And I am sure he wouldn't walk around claiming he is one either.

You see, japan has to many stars to select from and too much politics. If Maruyama changed his citizenship like Deguchi he might have won a medal in the Olympics. I'm just saying it would be very possible. I'm sure he could find some Korean heritage maybe, or even become canadian 🇨🇦
