While some of their early output wasn't exceptional, exceptional, it was still pretty darned good (particularly Shooter's Legion of Super-Heroes). They were also rare instances of talent.

I'lll walk this back a little. The majority of creators that are legends had a track record of success and greatness from their 30's or earlier. Since the 70's, almost every GREAT creator was already a star in their 20's and just grew from there. From about 1970 until about 2010 or so, almost everyone that is a superstar was already a star at least in their 20's. The only guy that I can think that wasn't at least some degree of a star before their 40's was Stan. Bendis was about 33 when he became a star. Millar was 30. Brubaker was about 33. Moore was like 30. But Gaiman was in his 20's. Gerry Conway was in his 20's. Frank Miller was in his 20's. Jim Shooter was in his teens. Claremont was in his 20's. Byrne was in his 20's. Len Wein was in his 20's. Warren Ellis was in his 20's.

Soon after, he was invited to write for Marvel, and, in 2009, Hickman launched his first ongoing series Secret Warriors In 2009, Hickman began his run on Fantastic Four with the Dark Reign: Fantastic Four limited series. Jed MacKay's first professional comic was an eight-page story in 2011's X-Men: To Serve and Protect #4. Four years later, he was invited to do another eight-page story in 2015's Spider-Verse #2 and then another story in 2018's Edge of Spider-Geddon #1 In 2019, he was announced as the writer for the first Black Cat ongoing series

Agreed. It was so clear she was more interested in writing Wiccan and Hulkling and had Death's Head guest in his own book. The give away was in one of the letter columns when someone gushed about how much Death's Head meant to them and how excited he was to see him come back, and she just brushed it off with "I love it when fans react like that" comment. No, dummy, that's your cue to say how much you like the character and what you like about him. You've given yourself away because you so clearly don't! It's a shame because a) it's rare to get any Death's Head material, and b) Kei Zama'a art was amazing. Sold my copies on Ebay. Never reading that trash again.

McKay it's just a average writer. Nothing special. The Taskmaster mini was abysmal. Your Avengers it's "ok" in the your best and mediocre in your worst. Your Moon Knight started strong but the lastest arc was weak. Your Black Cat book was a "cute" book in fact and delivery us the best Felicia Hardy in years after Dan Slott almost ruined her in ASM. I don't read Doctor Strange and neither your X-Men too. Overall McKay it's a hit or miss for me. Marvel don't have good writers anymore. Never read any McKay, but I have to ask on Priest. I've mostly read Priest's recent DC work, and I need to know if he always did that thing where he intercuts the story with these black title cards, like he did on Rebirth Deathstroke as if every book he writes is many scenes in some sort of crime thriller or procedural. He did that same trope on every DC book he wrote, but I've recently read his work as "Owsley"?, way back during the late 80s at Marvel in this Epic Collection Kraven's Last Hunt book and he didn't do that there. I hated his Rebirth JL run, wasn't any better than Hitch's writing at the start. It's amazing, because just about every book at the start of Rebirth was amazing, except JL which I saw described as the Michael Bay book of Rebirth. Yep. But, with that title card intercut between scenes and the jarring scene jump, I've found Priest's stories to be rather hard to follow and seemingly all over the place. Sorry I never read his Black Panther run. I understand that's the ultimate celebrated run of the character.

IMO, Jed MacKay has written some good books. Wrote a great MJ and Black Cat and Moon Knight is good. Have been disappointed in Avengers, I noticed right away that he seldom has the group interact together. He prefers to break them out into twos, fight in twos, converse in twos, etc. I like to see the group interact as an entire group, much like they did on the animated show Avengers Earth's Mightiest Hero's. You are also correct; a good villain is key. Maybe Jed is spread too thin.

Mackay has arrived! When you've reached the part of your career where it's trendy to shit on you, you know you've made it. I enjoy Mackay's Moon Knight. I thought his Doctor Strange run, from Death of..., through Strange, and finally Doctor Strange were quite good. Black Cat was also good. His Avengers and XMen do not appeal to me. They're not bad, but they're not great. Just kinda meh. Blood Hunt was the first thing I've read by Mackay that was objectively bad. He's on too many books, and it shows. I don't think team books are his forte. Id be interested in seeing him on Daredevil or Spider-Man (how much worse could it get?), maybe Powerman and Iron Fist. It was less the lukewarm story that got me to drop X-Men, and more the Steggman art that just was not hitting for me. I get it. People want the marquee comics to be amazing, and Avengers and X-Men are not amazing. The disappointment is well earned, but the hate and name calling are unwarranted. I honestly feel bad for anyone who has to work on X-Men, these days. No matter what you do, you're gonna get crucified. X-Force has come the closest to being a good comic, but there's something still not quite hitting for me.
