Cap and Eric, Ultimate Origins by Bendis shows the "plane crash" that killed Peter's parents is a lie created by Nick Fury. Peter's father worked for Fury as a scientist trying to re-create the super soldier serum, along with Bruce Banner. Banner experimented on himself, against orders, and turned himself into the Hulk for the first time. He accidental kills Peter's parents and Fury covers up the situation. This explains why Fury gives Peter so many breaks when he is Spider-man, despite his worldview on many things.

So the whole Venom story is a lie? a Secret Lie that was kept for years? I don't know, that doesn't add up. I choose to regard the reason given in the first Venom arc as the real truth behind Peter's and Eddie's Parents, even though it was written by the same person.
@Schoedsack8 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't go so far to say the whole story in the Vemon arc was a lie. Yes, the Brocks are a problem if you accept the Ultimate Origins story. I'm not sure if the writing staff had a detail plan on the backstory for all these characters. For the most part, Ultimate Origins still holds up, particularly regarding Nick Fury, Charles Xavier, Magenato, and Wolverine. Their may be contradictions with that book and what they tell people in other books, but, it should be remembered they are the one's telling these parts of their past. And, they are not the most trust worth people in the world. Bendis, for the most part, keeps continuity in tact with Origins. However, I understand why the Peter's parents aspect of that book is hard for you to accept.

Yay finally at ASM. I know I will get hate for this and I get all the reasons people dislike the film but man I really enjoy it. I honestly think it is the best Spider-Man film. I prefer how this Peter is more proactive than most screen versions, he is updated effectively where he is bullied and an outcast less for being a nerd and more for being very closed off. I was bullied a lot in middle and high school in this same generation and I can say that yeah that is more why kids are picked on these days. The fact that I am a geek like say Tobey's spiderman was not why but rather this more closed off, wallflower attitude that makes one easy pickings for bullies is what causes one to be bullied. I get that people find this Peter to be smug and while I can see that, it does not bother me cause I like Peter having that very Ditko Spider-Man esq attitude of feeling the world owes him cause all the stuff he has to go through. The arc being that you have to actually improve yourself and not wait for everyone to be nice to you or for your life to work out. Take the initiative, be the change you want to see in the world, all that stuff. I also really like that Gwen is more of a sidekick than just a love interest and we actually really get a good sense of why she likes Peter. I like that this Ben's speech is right out of Ultimate almost word for word and honestly is better than simply saying the responsibility line cause great power coming with great responsibility does not really mean one should go out and fight crime in a suit. The whole "if you can do good things for people then you have an obligation to do those things" idea is a lot more in depth so kudos to Bendis for that speech I guess. Also nice that he suggested mechanical webshooters for this film. But yeah I really like this movie, sue me!

redleader antilles I honestly have very little idea why Gwen likes Peter. His behavior is stalkerish (specially in 2) he follows her to her job, steals someone else's badge to get into said job, then snoops around said job despite her telling him not to (an action that could have gotten her in trouble). That's three strikes in the span of 10 minutes. This Peter is smart and... "charming" in some ways ( I guess?), but Gwen has too much going for her to ignore all of Peter's faults. This relationship felt more obligatory than the Raimi films imo.
@redleaderantilles12638 жыл бұрын
The reason she likes Peter is made pretty clear. He reminds her of her dad. She compares the two of them several times. As Cap talks about a lot, she is really close to her dad and admires him a lot and that admiration for his heroics is why she falls for Peter. Peter does not really act like a stalker here too much. He sneaks into Oscorp for some other reason clearly cause he runs off. Yes he gets in trouble and she takes the badge away but she does not really know him at all there. That is not really enough to make her decide that this guy is not worth dating or at least getting to know. She seems to already see a bit of her dad in him when he sticks up for that kid early on and that is why she is willing to give him a chance. As for the Raimi films, MJ and Peter's relationship is really inconsistent. He has never spoken to her till the first act but then by the second we act like they are good friends. Peter likes MJ why? Cause she is hot? That's about it. At least here Gwen is smart and sticks up for Peter when he is getting beaten up.

I am with you....I actually think that loner Peter is way more realistic than Hollywood nerdy Peter. Who says that good-looking people can't be outsiders? And I really like the development Peter gets in this movie, how he slowly develops the costume and how he realizes that he should be out there to protect people and not to extract revenge. And I agree about the speech. Never got why people make fun of it, it is so much meaningful. The movie isn't perfect, but at least until Homecoming comes around, it is the best Spiderman movie so far - at least imho.

I'm in the camp that all of the Spider-Man films are heavily flawed and that we haven't really got a good version of the character until Civil War. As of now Spectacular Spider-Man is the best Spider-Man adaptation hands down. Raimi and Webb's versions leave a lot to be desired.
@Ren_Davis05318 жыл бұрын
I disagree because Peter's characterization leaves a lot to be desired in that film. The film overall is good, and is the best film, but the characterizations are a problem, especially for Peter. MCU Spider-Man, from what we've seen, feels more straight off the page compared to the other iterations.
@spencermalley108 жыл бұрын
Peter's characterization was fine, even if he wasn't exactly "right off the page" whatever that means
@Ren_Davis05318 жыл бұрын
Spencer Malley His characterization was a problem because he wasn't proactive and he was too timid and soft. He doesn't have much dimension to him in the Raimi films and feels too much like a stereotypical nerd. Saying that the MCU Spider-Man is straight off the page is a short hand way of saying this character has the depth and dimension of the comic book Spider-Man whereas Raimi lacked any of that. Besides the thematic groundwork of the plot in Spider-Man 2, Peter's character doesn't have much going for him.
@spencermalley108 жыл бұрын
Considering that SM2 was homaging "Spider-Man No More", Not being "proactive" is kind of the point. As for "dimension", I really don't see how he has any less than the "perfect" Spectacular Spider-Man cartoon version or Tom Holland for that matter.
@Ren_Davis05318 жыл бұрын
+110082539859021039545 Spider-Man No More is critically different than Spider-Man 2 in that he never loses his powers, making his choice completely his own, thus making him proactive. Peter was proactive in that story because he never loses his powers and makes the choice to stop being Spider-Man because of how it affects his life and later makes another choice to go back to being Spider-Man because he can't stop being a hero. It's all about Peter making choices for his life. In Spider-Man 2 that "choice" is undercut because he doesn't have his powers, so the impact is lessened when he stops being Spider-Man. He lacks dimension because he's too internalized and doesn't have much personality. He's very bland without good character building moments to offset his bland characterization. He mostly just lets things happen to him and is sad because his life isn't the way that he wants. There's not much heart or depth to the character. He starts off as a weak and timid kid who's not proactive and continues to be a weak and timid kid who's not proactive.

Oh man I going to get some crap for liking this movie.Let me say this movie has problems not the same degree as the next one but I like this movie as a character study of Peter Parker.I love that this movie is an origin for Peter Parker and why he needs something in his life to live for and thats Spider-man its saving people.I like the vigilante angle for this film and the dark color pallet helps because Spider-man in this film is an angry teenager that is shunned by everyone else and has the idea of "The world didn't do any thing for me why should I give anything back" but that causes him to be reckless both proven by Uncle Ben and Captain Stacy. Andrew Garfield is great in this film he can play the quieter,more shy and frustrated Peter and his Spider-man is great because Spider-man in this film is degrading criminals and just mocking them in a bully like manner taking out his frustrations and this works with TASM2 because in that film his humor is more playful than degrading. Gwen Stacy is also great because she as a character isn't toxic for Peter she helps on a personal level and I buy that the second she's on screen.Curt Conners however I like Rhys Ifans and I like him being a father figure and his best scenes should not have been cut.The Lizard stuff just leaves me puzzled I'll never understand what he is as a character or what he wants.But I do love that its Peter's fault that he exists. Also I love that this film echos the Ditko era of Spider-man mixed with the first arc of Ultimate Spider-man.Also some little easter eggs are neat treat seeing this in theaters we see a little refrence to 90s cartoon Spider Sense and a little bit of Horners score is from the PS1 Spider-man game.Also the costume looks like Ben Reilly's suit(personal favorite Spider-man costume) so that was a treat. Overall I really think this movie is for the most part true to the character I know people say this movie is too dark but Spider-man things in general have dark stories I mean look at Kravens Last Hunt,the Origin,Death of the Stacy's,Ultimate Spider-man etc.I can understand people not liking this version of Peter as an outsider(even though I feel its a modern take on Ditko's Peter.)and I will take outcast Pete over what I feel is a sterortype in Sam Rami's Spider-man.Now I would say if TASM2 which is more lighthearted and has a mixed of light and serious but my problem with that is that it doesn't work on any level despite my enjoyment of it would have been the perfect Spider-man film...If it was good.

I actually enjoy this movie, but I fucking hate the second one. My main problem with Peter in these movies is that I don't buy that he'd be a social outcast. He seems like a popular kid trying really hard to act like a unpopular kid. I think the ASM honest trailer sums up my thoughts on Peter Parker pretty well
@MysticalGreenBeanie8 жыл бұрын
I never understood that rational. Peter Parker is genuinely a cool guy. But he's socially awkward, and very standoffish. So even if people wanted to hang out with him, he'd probably push them away. Just like he did in the comics (well, the untold tales series at least addressed this from what I remember).
@SolarDragon0078 жыл бұрын
MysticalGreenBeanie But I just don't buy that he'd be an outcast in this film, even with his quirky personality . In real life, a person like this Peter probably wouldn't be bullied or avoided. Oh come on Nathan like you never did anything like that in high school with a girl crush you know that was out of your league lol. I use to take pictures all the time of my girl crush she knew but didn't care about it. Nor confronted me. We were actually friends. Kids do that around that age it's normal. Especially if there outcasts like me or socially awkward and was born that way. I mean come on look at Stranger Things. Jonathon took pics of Nancy with his camera. He didn't stalk her or follow her every where if they start doing that then yes that's wrong. But taking pictures is probably no big deal. It's a crush they would get over her like I did. Just like a girl has crush photos of her favorite celebrity guy in her room when she is a teen. Isn't that creepy?
@bravos10768 жыл бұрын
Nathan Snyder Lol that's not what I meant. And I never did that either I can see where you can see that. The difference is I always asked permission first and just took photos because it was my only thing I liked doing. I didn't talk to people that much because I have a social problem because of my medical heart problem as a child. So photos always helped. Gladly I grew out of that my senior year. Still it is a bit creepy to use her photo on your desktop but like i said. Girls use photos of there crushes on there walls and desktops all the time. So why is that not creepy? If I had a pic of Scarlett Johansson as my desktop would it be considered creepy or just a crush? Just because I'm a guy? I'm not saying your wrong I'm just asking what's the difference? I don't see any harm in it if the girl doesn't mind and he doesn't stalk her.

Sins Past... What the H-E-Double Hockey Sticks was the logic behind that one? They managed to make Gwen look like she couldn't understand normal thinking by hooking up with a one-night stand for the dumbest reason, and then wanting to go back to Peter to live like everything was normal and raise her kids. It makes Mary Jane look even more like she can't understand normal thinking by sitting on that information for so long without even considering the longer she waited, the worse Peter would probably feel after finding out. Or that she knew all this, didn't say anything, and looks him in the eyes talking about love and trust throughout the years they spent as a couple.

What I can give Amazing Spider-Man over the first Raimi film; 1. Better Uncle Ben. I really like this Uncle Ben; how the "with great power comes great Responsibility" thing is more intertwined with his character than just a thing he inevitably has to say. 2. Gwen is a more likeable character than Mary Jane (but that has its own issues). But i'll go so far as to say: the movie sort of dies part way through. Ignoring that they somehow managed to make Uncle Ben's death even more contrived than it already was (seriously, it felt like the Joker from Dark Knight had Uncle Ben assassinated), they just abandon Peter hunting for the killer (which was one of the more interesting ideas in the film), Doc Connors was a really weak antagonist (both acting and character wise), they somehow managed to make the love interest more likeable, but Peter himself less likeable, the action was meh, plot contrivances in general just kept building and building, while it doesn't quite reach Amazing Spider-Man 2 level bad, it still gets pretty bad.
@swanpride8 жыл бұрын
They don't just abandon Peter hunting for the killer, there is an incident which leads to him stopping - to be precise when Gwen's father tells him that Spider-man helps no-one but himself. Shortly after the incident on the bridge happens where he rescues the little boy and he realizes that THIS is his true calling, not revenge. He hasn't forgotten Uncle Ben's killer - he still has the picture of him at the end of the movie - but he has his priorities straight after that. It is the kind of development the Peter Parker in the original trilogy never got. If anything, that one regressed from movie to movie.
@roguecreed2418 жыл бұрын
swanpride The issue is he could have easily both been Spider-Man *and* searched for Uncle Ben's killer. Being Spider-Man doesn't conflict with that, just do your searching while on patrol. The way the film is paced, it's as if he just forgot his Uncle was murdered mere feet away from him. Not only is that weaksauce writing, it's also not comic accurate, and makes Uncle Ben's death feel less important than it should. "The Peter in the Raimi trilogy never got that kind of development" yes he did. He went from being Spider-Man because he felt he had to, to being Spider-Man because he wanted to. Clear development. If anything; the Amazing Spider-Man Peter is the less developed/comic accurate of the two in this respect because he never really struggled with being Spider-Man.
@Ren_Davis05318 жыл бұрын
You misunderstand the reason why he never finds Uncle Ben's killer. The reason is to thematically emphasize that Spider-Man isn't about vengeance. It ultimately doesn't matter whether or not he finds the killer because the point is that bad things happen in life, but we must be greater than what we suffer.
@Ren_Davis05318 жыл бұрын
It's not forgotten. Peter never finding the killer is an intentional choice to highlight that vengeance is not at the core of the character. Peter is fueled by vengeance to find his Uncle's killer, but throughout the course of the film he learns to be a better Spider-Man that is concerned with heroism as opposed to vengeance. Never finding the killer shows that ultimately his vengeance didn't matter and finding Uncle Ben's killer doesn't matter because he will be a hero regardless. The big deviation is that in the comics Peter finds the killer for him to learn that he was responsible for Ben's death, but in this movie Peter was present and knows who killed his Uncle.
@jman28568 жыл бұрын
It probably would have had some pay off if at the end of the film, Peter finds Uncle Ben's killer in a classic bank robbing scenario and carts him off to jail solidifying that he's become Spider Man. As it stands, it's just a dropped plot point that makes it look like Peter flat out forgot what he was even doing.

I rewatched both of the ASM movies last week and I've got to say, I still *really* like both of them. I'm going to have to jump into Eric's wagon with what he's saying at the start of the video. The inter-personal stuff is one of my favourite parts of Spider-Man and his stories (it's also why JMS's run is my favourite, due to all of the relationship stuff he did with his run). I will, however, say that the MCU Spider-Man costume's probably my favourite. I prefer the Ditko/Romita eyes over the Bagley eyes and the spider logo in ASM is literally just the Raimi logo with some tweaks here and there, which I didn't even like anyway. The Raimi/ASM spider logos are too aggressive looking in my opinion. Also, despite what I said about the MCU suit, the black stripes are really out of place in my opinion. LIke, if we needed to have stripes, just make them blue like the other negative parts of the suit.

I really don't understand Eric's love for these films. The Sam Raimi trilogy is tonally perfect, but I understand the criticisms from comic book fans in regards to a lack of accuracy to the comics. All of his trilogy including 3 are incredible well directed and are dripping with charm. As Jay from RedLetterMedia says, even if they don't fully work as Spider-Man films they work as Sam Raimi films. The weird choices like putting a shot from The Beyond in the first Spider-Man and having the Doctor Octopus scene in the hospital bed be a horror film and campy close ups of women yelling at the camera. Marc Webbs's films are shallow studio driven products, I really don't see anything redeeming in them.

I actually do enjoy this movie for the most part but the charisma of the cast is largely what carries it. With all due respect to Captain Logan and others who feel this way, the expanded origin story doesn't help at all. A teenage kid with superpowers who indirectly causes his parental figure's death when he wasn't being responsible is all you need for motivation. Having Peter Parker become a vengeance driven vigilante before he learns to be a selfless hero is protracting something that doesn't need to be stretched out. It feels unnecessary and pandering. Cap even says Peter is part Spider-man/part Batman at that moment. Also him not finding his uncle's killer is a dropped subplot, not him putting the matter away. He is already being a superhero by fighting the lizard and trying to save everyone going over the bridge before C. Thomas Howell yells for his kid. We also don't see a moment conveying Peter letting go of the search. At the end of the film the mugger's illustration is still on his wall, almost teasing that this (like the missing parents subplot) is something they can follow up on in the sequel.

I'm just gonna let play "Spanish Flea" on another page while I read this comment section filled with people arguing about Spider-Man films and get bitter and insult over them lol :)

Ah I've gotta disagree with you guys on Ultimate Venom. I really love Ultimate Spider-Man but I think its one of the weaker earlier arcs in that series :(

I used to read Ultimate Spider-Man but after they fucked up Carnage, I was done because they were already walking on egg shells with me over the Hulk like Green Goblin.

Yeah I feel the problem with Carnage was that they had to somehow tie him into the Venom origin they'd given

This is easily the worst Spider-Man movie to date. Both SM3 and TASM2 are better.

I'm sorry but you are wrong Eric, about no one liking this movie and the sequel. I like them both.
