Turns out the $500 sale was a best offer accepted at $350. Still makes it a record high price.

The most compelling (albeit anecdotal) evidence I've heard so far was on your call-in show when Dennis shared his son's interest in first appearances piqued after playing the game. He literally grew up in a comic shop and didn't care before, yet something about the game changed that. This is EXACTLY the pipeline that Marvel needs to build: kids love the game, dig a little deeper into where the character came from, start buying comics and reading stories. I hope it sticks!!

That 525 sale was a best offer. It actually sold for 350. Always use eBay’s product research section for sold listings. They provide actual sales figures that have been paid for.

As someone who just got into the hobby of comics I'm 29. I never understood comics and had zero interest. I was first introduced to marvel/dc through the animation series from the 90s it was always something that I cherished. As i got older i realized a lot of the characters I enjoyed watching when I was a kid are the same characters I enjoy today. I grew up playing video games like league of legends and overwatch but my love for marvel/dc character never changed and I end up starting to collecting comics because I cherish those characters and for me it was really cool to own the comics that they started from. I don't collect old stuff mostly late 80s early 90s (more affordable) but even newer stuff I collect variants for newer character I enjoy like miles and recently started to read the new DC Absolute series. I've "collected" skins in games and they don't hold the same excitement vs having the physical stuff/comic that a character first appeared in or a really nice cover from an artist like peach momoko or dan hipp. I feel like a lot of younger kids don't understand rn but as they get older they're going to want physical stuff to display

Helps that the print run started to lower around WCA 7. I been picking these up whenever I see them for the past 2 years because of the lower printing and relative rarity. Love the channel Swags! 💫
@traestratton3109Ай бұрын
I believe the Best Point from the previous video was that the game actually tells the player where the character's first appearance is! It's just one step to eBay or the LCS from there... Then, when they get new skins/outfits the game tells them exactly what comic to buy for the new uniform key. NICE! The optics of this are excellent because many players want all the backstory they can get on a game character they really like, and the best way to do that will be for the gamer to read about them in a comic- hopefully month after month.

Great show my man! Luckily I had found that West Coast 1st land shark book for $2 this year. Surprisingly it is a tough book to find in the wild, and it has always been pricy. I recall at start of this year raws were at $40-60 with no video game release and no news.

The game is being used as a marketing ploy for the same small circle of middle aged men that spec on movie hype, live action and tv show options. The only point I wanted to make was that this won’t correlate to our youth or bringing in gamers to the hobby. I probably disagree that people buying these books are actually excited for them, even with low dollar sales. We can see the same trends whenever there is hype around a new character (ie. Spider-boy, only for it to die off when they don’t sell). While the same fomo addicts are seeing this as a way to flip and get rich, the kids playing the game are simply just playing the game. They aren’t the ones spending hundreds of dollars on these books. The kids aren’t the ones telling their parents to buy them these books. They don’t care. The same fomo bros are going to look back a year from now and see the same crash in value. So yes, ultimately, we agree on what is happening here. Marvel knows how to milk the middle aged man that speculates. I also do hope that at least a few kids might pick up a comic from this, but it won’t be enough to make any difference in how the modern floppy comic is consumed and how it is a dying commodity. Jeff the Shark will be popular among the kids, but the IP won’t translate for them into floppy comics. It’s going to be in skins, other games, animated action, and maybe even in hard cover publications that resemble dogman books. But it simply won’t translate over to floppy comics. I’m absolutely excited for anything that brings kids into marvel IP, and I’m happy that the FOMOers are blowing money because it is what keeps floppy comics in life support. I just can’t speak on these things anymore without painting the whole picture of where floppy comics are going.
@JernosComicsPopCultureАй бұрын
@@brandonmetro7115 What was I wrong about? Please do share. I never said that these books wouldn't be prime FOMO picking. I simply said it won't be the kids buying it, and it's the same circle jerk of middle aged men flippin and dippin. This book going crazy like this just proves my point. It's the same toilet, just different sh^t. In a year, come back and tell me how much these 9.8s are going to be selling for. But I am still very curious to what you think I was wrong about.

@@JernosComicsPopCulture The same circle jerk of middle aged men. Your wrong on that for starters
@brandonmetro7115Ай бұрын
@@JernosComicsPopCulture I think I need you too summarize your actual points before we go any further on that. Also, If Jeff the shark was being sold amongst us circle jerks fomoing, then I feel as though I would have seen the book before on at least one comic Channel or top 10 list, or something.
@JernosComicsPopCultureАй бұрын
@ so what you’re saying is you made a baseless statement about me without even having a grasp of my argument? And you did see Jeff the Shark being talked about by spec KZbinrs, right here. This just came about as well, and it takes at least a week for top 10s to release. But we’re arguing semantics right now. I made my argument clear on swag’s first video and in my video. If you think there people paying 500 bucks for this books are the kids or young adults playing this game, then I would have to humbly hypothesize that your knowledge of the current state of comics is similar to your knowledge of my argument, and that you lead with emotion and assumptions, rather than facts, before you speak. Meaning, respectfully, you are just uneducated to what’s really going on. I mean, honestly, the person that purchased the book for 500 might have watched swag’s video and got super excited and fomo’d out. Because that’s how small this ‘circle’ is.

Now that is some hot spec: peach/galacta/jeff mosh up cvr. Everything that someone many decades younger than me would want that I would never in a million years think about picking up. Well done Swag, albeit a bit stomach churning.

Here's my anecdotal 2-cents: as of 12/10/24, when I'm writing this, we know that the hype train has not left the station and flipper/dealers haven't caught wind of the game spec, because the ebay listings for the 'game keys' don't have "Marvel Rivals" in the listing titles. If WCA7, JIM83, MP15, WoR:NAoA1, SME15, etc were going up with sellers trying to capture that market, they'd be working that SEO.
@ConSarolasАй бұрын
My sons, now 26 and 21, know all the Marvel characters and event, not from the comics, but from the games. Neither has ever read a comic. I've never played a game. And speculators don't follow either comics or games.

I’d say the sales are less proof that it’s making players want to buy the comic and instead is driving FOMO in already existing speculators like you hoping that that the game will make the book popular. As someone who already belongs to the group of people you’re hoping the game makes interested in comic book speculating. Albeit I’ve been a fan of comic already for a long time. I can’t speak for everyone, but personally I’d much rather read the issues digitally or get a trade paperback and never drop $500 on an individual single issue.

With Australia banning social media in under 16s, there very well may be an unforseen situation with actual books and reading rates getting higher and, therefore, comics feeding into this metric at some point. Reading skills and critical thinking are probably at very weak levels in advance Western societies. If comics could utilise what will likly be a domino effect from Australia to the usa and Europe to enhance such skills then who knows maybe comics could make the strong come back they help many previous generations before with.
