IMO: Graphics: Obviously Spider-Man 2. Though TBH, neither game looks absolutely spectacular. Spider-Man 2’s model designs are hideous (besides some designs like Venom and Norman Osborn for example) and I feel like would’ve looked more visually appealing had there maybe been more consistent clean colourful lighting (like InFamous: Second Son) which enhances the atmosphere or just a unique animation style like Ultimate Spider-Man. Web swinging: Definitely Web of Shadows. Fall damage: Spider-Man 2 LOL, I dunno know but seeing the ragdoll just go flying after falling is hysterical, better than WoS just face planting. Symbiote combat: Web of Shadows, and it’s really no contest if we’re being honest. Wall combat: Not fair since Spider-Man 2 doesn’t even feature wall combat. Stopping cars: Web of Shadows TBH. Being able to pick up and throw cars is something I didn’t know I needed to do. If Insomniac didn’t remove legit EVERY CAR STOPPING ANIMATION (that was just retarded) and not only include a single goddamn one, maybe it would’ve been more enjoyable. Red suit combat: Web of Shadows, and it’s really no contest if we’re being honest. QTE: TBH I think it could easily go either way, but I prefer Web of Shadows ultimately. Considering the fact you use it for cool as spectacle like fighting a symbiote-enhanced Wolverine, Vulture high in the clouds, and a Building-Sized massive Venom feels more climatic to me. Wall running: Eh, could go either way. I kinda prefer SM2 tho seeing how you move faster and it ties seamlessly with web swinging or perching. It’s kinda weird in the fact he runs WAY faster up walls than on the ground.

web swinging does NOT go to WOS. I agree it is very good for its time, but it is nowhere near the complexity and overall look of SM2, especially when you see good players use all the tricks, new featured instant charge jump, boosting through the air with Miles venom strike or Peters arms and web gliding. EDIT: I was kinda wrong. I now think both games are equal. What WoS lacks in certain areas, it makes up for in others. I recommend u guys play it again. The game allows more freedom in terms of pure web swinging, and I am doing things I didn't even know I could do in this game. Both games are great.

Also the games nowadays all are trying to impress you with how many details and rendered objects they can put on screen. Same goes for DMC5, for example. While in the WoS are they didn't hesitate to make a costume purple instead of pitch black that looks like a big black spot, or to give your strikes a flashy colorful aura to emphasize the impact. And now the game is kinda dull with being so very realistic at any point of time. Another example is the way GTA SA blures your vision and makes the camera shake when you start gaining speed. And GTA 5 just doesn't. Yes, it's more realistic, but there's no feeling you're being fast, you just kinda see things speed up.

My first impression of this comparison is that there's something that feels so 'safe' about the newest iteration of the symbiote's combat. In WoS you can see in the animation, through *body movement*, that Spidey isn't pulling any punches while using it, the button symbiote web attack makes you choke enemies; the RB+X special attack has him beat the hell out of enemies (which you can prolong if you smash the X button), his web strike + X has him grind the enemies into ground, etc, etc. It's rule of cool and violent, and makes you feel powerful, while in the newer game they're just tendril attacks that feel too abstract to feel any sort of power behind them. They feel so edgeless in comparison thanks to that.

Nice catch. I never thought about it that way. It's true. You never really get up close and personal in SM2. Wide-scale attacks are cool, but sometimes something as simple as beating someone to a pulp with your bare hands just has more oomph. It feels more personal. More spiteful. More deliberate. Yes, he could just demolish any of them in a few seconds, but he actively *chooses* to take his time and beat them in the simultaneously worst and most fun ways imaginable. And even then, he's still creative and using it effectively. He revels in the power by taking his time and enjoying it while still not shying away from using the tendrils to sling around or pull enemies closer. It's fantastic.

Web of Shadows was way ahead of it's time. It's honestly a shame despite all the backing from Sony. the symbiote Spidey in Spider-Man 2 is nowhere near the Web of Shadows level! Web of Shadows even had awesome wall combat moves and the number of symbiote attacks was crazy. Above everything it's actually a bigger shame how short lived the symbiote plot and coverage is in Spider-Man 2, compare that to Web of Shadows which took it's time to gradually build up the symbiote epidemic gradually over the course of story.

It's literally an alien. Plus, it'd be an amazing contrast to the usual realism. Making it seem more unnatural, weird, and dangerous. Like, imagine getting it in SM2 and seeing combat like in WoS. It'd really sell the power and uniqueness of the symbiote and clash against the realism in a way that also serves the concept of it being an alien of unknown whereabouts. Also, it's just plain badass having the tendrils as a part of alternate combos and being their own thing instead of 4 abilities you use and have to wait to use again. It's way more versatile and diverse. Sounds kinda OP, right? Good. It's supposed to be. It'd also be a much better way of having us, like Pete, not wanna get rid of it. When all it adds is a cool, but short-lived surge mode and 4 abilities, the loss of the symbiote doesn't hit as hard. I guarantee if I played WoS, based on how they both look alone, I'd use the symbiote suit way more than the regular. With SM2, I don't get that. I don't feel like I need the symbiote. The abilities are good, but the iron arm ones, while being worse, still exist as a replacement. The surge mode is the best, but doesn't add much, the only reason it being as cool as it is is the custom finishers that happen every 2 or 3 hits. When *MIDGAME SLIGHTLY BEFORE VENOM SPOILERS* I wasn't able to use the symbiote abilities anymore 'cause Pete got the suit off, I was just like "oh well" and moved on. The symbiote suit being in a game has always been such a rich and genius idea to me. It's an addiction that, if done right, can infect the player too. That's why I find it so interesting and why I clearly care too much about it. The concept of having a gameplay style so good that it overshadows the other in almost, if not, every way is so juicy. Imagine how long you have the symbiote on or how many missions you have it on for actually affect the story? You get all this power and combat that feels objectively superior to the one you had before, but at the cost of losing yourself. It's absolutely immaculate. Not "good" or "bad" decisions the game lets you make, decisions that your gameplay makes, decisions that your love and greed for power make. You choose, not based on what you want but based on how you've played. The symbiote corrupts. What better way to show that corruption by not giving you the option to be better due to your gameplay feeding into that corruption? That would make it feel more like a real choice. And actually have consequences for both paths. If you play with the regular suit more, your side is chosen because of that, the consequence being having less power and damage, not having as many combos, and maybe bosses requiring another phase or healthbar to take down. If you play more with the symbiote suit, like with the regular, your side is chosen because of that, the consequence being losing friends or something or accidentally killing because of all the power. Like, maybe MJ stops talking to you, the police no longer trust you and try to arrest you, like when Pete first started out as Spidey. Perhaps make the game kinda easy with the symbiote suit and ramp it up the longer you have it on, to the point where it's too easy and not fun anymore. The main consequences for the regular suit route should be more gameplay focused and the main consequences for the symbiote suit route should be more narratively focused. And with that, I'm finally done. Like I said at the top, I'm sorry that you're the unfortunate one who indirectly and accidentally set me on this rant, I originally didn't mean for this comment to be THIS long, but I just kept typing and typing and typing. I'm at the point where this is me actively telling myself I have to end this comment now. If you read all this, you're a real trooper and I commend you. I'm generally a huge fan of SM2's Black Suit, especially of how cool and fluid the tendril attacks look in game. However, in terms of combat and the feeling of raw power that you get from using the Black Suit, WoS absolutely handles it so much better. One awesome attention to detail was that if you had it activated for too long, the symbiote started to take control until you passed out and it was game over, which is very lore-accurate to how the symbiote works sometimes in the Spiderman mythos.

As a game designer, WoS gameplay design is sooooo much more complicated! I don't even know how they cram up all there gameplay mechanic into that game. I think that was the reason the missions design is a little weird, and graphic was not that impressive. After all, WoS is still a wonderful game. I just hope they build WoS 2 from that, imagine what we could have. A beautiful Spiderman game like Spiderman 2 and perfect gameplay mechanic like WoS.

Probably the worst fail of Marvel Spider-Man 2 is that they failed to really distinguish the Black Suit Spider-Man from the normal one. He has a rage mode and a few special moves of its own, but normal Spider-Man has good special moves too and since you can use them on a Black Suit anyway it makes it even less meaningful. It doesn't feel powerful like in Web of Shadows, where the ground tendril combo can wipe out an entire horde of symbiotes or a beatdown can take down even bosses very quickly. Also Venom is still a lot more fun to play in Ultimate Spider-Man.

For combat, definitely Web of Shadows: ground combat, air combat and wall combat, each of them with their combos. And you can switch suits at any time, even during combat, which really helps its case. For web swinging, despite Web of Shadows being faster (or that's how it feels), I prefer Insomniac because it feels more acrobatic and a lot of air tricks. For graphics, the obvious answer is Insomniac. And for the story and characters, still Insomniac.

I don't think spiderman 2 has ''too much cutscenes'' you have 2-3 minutes cutscenes and then long fights.. two missions that have a slow pace but they're fun to play too.. overall experience insomniac games are way better the replayability is better too in my opinion BUT OF COURSE web of shadows is a great game. The symbiote suit in Spider-Man 2 is just a skin with button prompts that give you cool looking animations, the symbiote suit in Web of Shadows is a whole ass combat system that gives the player insane control over comboes. I remember pulling some seriously creative comboes when switching between the red and black suit. The combat isn't even close between these two games.

For WOS Both suits have different animations too in every aspect. Running, swinging , and of course combat. in Spider-Man 2 it's the same until it came to finishers and rage mode. Also to add in wos you can actually feel the buff the black suit gives you. It doubles the strength with just basic combos.

The black suit abilities in SM2 were really disappointing. In Web of Shadows, you could do all kinds of crazy shit with the suit throughout the course of the battle, but in SM2, you get to use it once, and then you have to wait an absurd amount of time to use that ability again. And some of the abilities aren't even that good. Like, Symbiote Strike doesn’t even feel as effective or reliable as Spider Rush.
