It truly is. Even though it's a superhero film, it focuses on a real disturbing real world issue and the cover of smells like teen spirit is very haunting and honestly made me forget it was a Marvel movie for a bit. I don't know how best to describe it because I still enjoyed the film, but I wish the film was more like the opening and downplayed the superhero aspect and maybe told a more grounded and mature story. Not necessary a hard R movie but went with more serious and somber tone. Reminds me of a Punisher MAX story arc called The Slavers in which Frank Castle goes against human traffickers and the overall story feels very different from a usual Punisher tale of him gunning down bad guys.

A lot of people want to know more about what happened in the opening credits, but red room is supposed to secret. It’s like the directors and producers telling us ‘we’re not going to show what happened in the red room, because no one is supposed to know what happens in the red room’. The whole reason this film did so well is because like in reality, half the time we don’t know the human trafficking is happening. It’s relatable.

2:09 if you didn’t notice one of the girls was pulled back from the rest. This implies that the villain sent her to be killed since she “wasn’t good enough” this scene has many good scenes and is something I wouldn’t expect from Marvel. I loved this movie even though some didn’t. Adding on to this, yeah Thanos, Dormammu, Hela, etc are scary, but Draekov is scarier. His political power and being so high up is what makes him the scariest. Like he said, he can start and end wars with a snap of his fingers. That’s what makes him so scary. The realism of it. The fact that he could be real. That he “is” real.

The plot was thin and the premise was spoon-fed in the first 15 minutes when Yelena had the vial used on her. It all happened way too fast, in order to create a non-stop action scene rather than a movie. The villain was bad. Taskmaster is “big boring killer robot” again and the “big reveal” felt shallow. Draykov’s death was laughable and cheesy. Honestly once the Widows stormed his office and attacked Natasha to set up the grenade toss, I was just about done with the movie. Out of topic but this gives ‘DuckTales’ a darker meaning. In Ducktales (1987-1990), Donald drops off Huey, Dewey, & Louie to his uncle, Scrooge McDuck. With Scrooge’s supervision, he trains the kids to be adventurers like him. In this case, Nat & Yelena were the “Huey, Dewey, & Louie” to Alexei & Melina’s “Donald Duck”, being forced to be taken by Dreykov (a darker mix between Scrooge & Glomgold) who trains the girls to be assassins.

@@pyromaniac034 I wouldn't necessarily say that's dark. While yes, these are negative situations, the way they are portrayed is not dark whatsoever. Now THAT's the movie I wanted to see. Natasha had an awful life before The Avengers. It's already been established that she never had a family or anyone she cared about. A gritty revenge story of her taking down the Red Room and Dreykov, would have been amazing. I loved Yelena, don't get me wrong, but a family comedy was just such a disingenuous take on a Black Widow movie. It had so much potential.
@HighLordBlazeReborn
@HighLordBlazeReborn 6 ай бұрын
Disney sometimes does this thing where they KNOW they have a chance to go off in a certain direction and actually make a mature fucking movie, then they go off and do the family-friendly thing because a raging anti-semite decided to draw a line about it decades ago. It's the biggest issue with the MCU being under this studio. They can never make a true piece of art without it sticking to this ludicrous box they've put themselves in. You look at this, and you just feel Cate wanted to go in a different direction but she's shackled with the bs the studio forces on every director. So disappointing.

I wish the movie was made as a psychological thriller. It set up as one but then turned into just a regular superhero movie. With Natasha on the run, her dark past, brainwashing, the Red Room, her traumatic life experiences... it was all a perfect mixture to create a really good psychological action thriller. A major missed opportunity. I wonder if Cate Shortland had planned on it but faced too much studio interference, because this opening scene is such a huge tonal contrast to everything else that comes after.

@@jeaniebeanie6 yes, they could have also shown Natasha having some hesitation and fear when she decided to destroy the Red Room for good, they could've shown her having nightmares, vomiting, having flashbacks of this moments of torture when she was a kid and still trying to keep herself strong to face her past. Throughout the whole movie she seems just fine when she figures out the Red Room still exists and gather everyone to go help her, she doesn't show any kind of hesitation about this "horrible past" she had, which is disappointed considered in every trailer or commercial they tried to sell the movie as "Natasha facing her past" but she deals with the situation just like she dealt with any other previous villain, it doesn't seem something actually connected with her. That's just what I think, I still like the movie a lot.

I don’t know if I’m the only one that thinks this; but this scene here makes me better understand why Romanoff throughout the entire MCU series seems so closed off to everyone around her. Even when she seems to have a romantic connection with someone (like Steve Rogers or Bruce Banner), it only goes so far. She even says in this film that she has lived many lives. This is a really cool introductory scene to the film, because it reveals more about the bleakness and tragedy of Romanoff’s entire life.
