Although, having said that, MvC:I is the first game in the series to boast a Cross-Universe Fusion boss. (That, of course, being Ultron Sigma. Unless one were to count their secondary form, Ultron Omega, as a separate boss. Then it would be TWO Cross-Universe Fusion bosses.)

That is very impressive even today so it certainly felt otherworldly for 1994. I was too young to completely understand that period when it just came out. But anyways, right after the last version of SF2, Capcom followed up with Darkstalkers and then this Xmen game... probably the most impressive jump of 2d technology so far (which then would be surpassed by the much more powerful cps3 games).

I miss how dynamic and colorful the character select screens were from COTA to MvC1. You could feel that comic book energy coming to life. MvC2's theme is iconic, but the select screen itself is so dull and static. MvC3 is pretty meh, but UMvC3 improved it with the Marvel and Capcom comic book pages. Everything about MvCI is just UGLY.

So people's love and nostalgia for this game makes them overlook the critical decadence in music, stages, arcade mode... It becomes a worshipped item that some people refuse to see flaws.

The idea of showing the full sprite on the select screen became so popular in the early 90s, pioneered and popularized by MK (92) and then spreading to japanese games like Samsho 1-3, KOF 94, and SFA1 and COTA, that the MSH select screen kinda felt obsolete right at the first sight. But then the "surprise" gimmick of showing the chars coming out for the transition into the versus screen, in a proccess that involves the whole design of the screen, with "skycrappers screens" showing the portrait art... that whole idea is absolute brilliancy from the devs. Even though other fg select screens in later Capcom games still show a good sense of design, nothing of that level of creativity was ever done again. No doubt a mark of the unbelievable level of artistry that the Capcom fg devs were reaching around the mid 90s. And all that was impressive for coming from the company that literally had just stopped working on the basic and humble SF2. Capcom truly grew like an anime protagonist transformation after early 1994 (SSF2T release). Unfortunately the rival companies didnt even bother doing something close to that level of creativity on select screens.

I think I heard something about there initially being plans to have Gill as the 3rd Capcom character in the DLC in place of one of the Marvel ones (probably Widow or Bucky (the bottom row is all the DLC characters)) but I guess Disney/Marvel pushed them towards adding more of their characters or something.

Maybe what makes a similar impression on me would be that old little "Marvel Comics" logo... with the big M shape and "Marvel" above "Comics".

its a shame!! the Divas at disney should let Capcom hand all the games disney sucks to make all their lives and for Capcom they should do what Smash bros did inlcude all previous marvel characters and include all previous Capcom characters with the UMVC 3 gameplay maybe and updated but its perfect and yes include dlc's slots for each side another 10 for each side, but disney will break their nails to let anyone touch their unused toys and do something new!!!

As absolute lacking as MVCI was and did…….I MUCH prefer that gameplay over the others. Oddly was very satisfying gameplay. Too bad it didn’t offer much of anything else
