Marvel addressed the historical significance of Sam Wilson becoming Captain America but they botched the story where that was being explored and they didn't do the leg work beforehand to make fans want to see him as Captain America like they did in the comics. I'm a huge Sam Wilson fan from the comics but they never gave Anthony Mackie the time he deserved as a friend of Steve and a potential leader of the Avengers so it may come off as jarring to some viewers when he took the mantle. Ironically, the critically panned Marvel's Avengers animated series made Sam the ride along character and a protege to both Steve and Tony so it makes sense when he eventually becomes Cap and the leader of the Avengers. If the MCU casted Sam to be younger and planned ahead a little bit, this transition could have been much smoother.

They botched a lot of leg work in a lot of places, it's a result of trying to compress decades of comic book lore into a movie or 10 tv episodes... it's a very complicated task that sadly permeates the whole enterprise of their cinematic universe (personally i think CUs are inherently doomed as they rely too heavily on nostalgia and not enough on good story telling)...

I always thought it was weird that Riri Williams wanted to be Iron Man instead of War Machine.

Disney's Marvel doesn't really want black characters. They killed off T'Challa using Boseman's death as an excuse and purposely tried to ruin Blade by replacing him with his daughter in his MCU debut. I don't doubt the daughter probably would've been biracial.

Caveat: I'm half white, half Asian, so my perspective on Black representation is meaningless, but I did want to talk about the adaptation of the Sam Wilson character in the MCU. Sam Wilson is not the first African-American superhero by a long shot, but he was the first Black hero I encountered as a child reading comic books in the 1970s, so he will always have a special place in my heart. I get that these characters have been around for decades, and different people interpret things differently, but I always saw the unction of the Sam Wilson character as injecting the topic of racism into Captain America stories. This is why comic book Sam Wilson is a social worker: it gives the writer more opportunities to bring the topic up when Sam is around. This is why Sam is an adult instead of a teenager, so that he can speak as an equal when he corrects Steve Rogers on microaggressions and the like (which he did). Sam Wilson's story function is important because you cannot talk about America without also talking about racism. Anyway, when they introduced Sam Wilson to the MCU, I felt that they dropped the ball. They did not use the Sam Wilson character for what I see as the primary story function of that character. For most of his appearances in the movies, the closest they ever got to talking about racism was that he briefly mentioned the Trouble Man soundtrack. Falcon and the Winter Soldier finally made up for lost time and gave me the Sam Wilson character I was expecting all along. They even mentioned the whole Isiah Bradley storyline, and Isiah Bradley has much harsher things to say about racism than Sam Wilson. PS-I would love to see a video by Black nerds going over the Secret Invasion TV show on Disney+. I really felt like there was a lot going on in the subtext about liberation that went completely over my head.

hmm i think you may be right... do they ever mention their names?? And there was a glitch where she says "you mentioned blue marvel earlier"... yeah like he JUST mentioned him in the last second! Humans wouldn't say "earlier" to something just said though logically it's true...

Not even close son.all DC black characters play second fiddle to the white ones...hell even side kicks have more juice than the black characters.when was the last time John Stewart or cyborg did anything noteworthy in DC???can they compare to black panther,Luke Cage or blade???I don't think so

@@wambokodavid7109 John Stewart is now a guardian and the strongest and greatest out of all the lanterns. He made the new power battery in the comics. I will say that black characters like Black Lightning, Vixen, Mr, Terrific, Hardware, etc. need more books because they barely have any lore to work with. Marvel is currently better at making black characters than DC. Miles basically ate Static's lunch.
