Alex Toth was an unbelievable force in The Superhero genre. A lot of people don’t know that Alex Toth created very elaborate and detailed drawings and backstories for every character he created while working for Hanna Barbara. Every Superhero, villain, and supporting character had a very detailed blueprint. Alex Toth basically created a Bible of information for all his characters. He also took his work and designs very seriously and wasn’t too happy when Hanna Barbara made parody spoof shows on some of his classic creations like Space Ghost Coast to Coast and Harvey Birdman Attorney at Law. In my opinion he’s one of the greatest artists to contribute to the superhero genre and He’s up there with the likes of Jack Kirby, Steve Ditko, and Alex Raymond. It’s just a shame that most people who’ve seen his work have no idea who he is even though his creations have made him such an inspirational figure.

True. Of course, it was originally seen as an animated update of the Depression-era radio show "The Adventures of Jack Armstrong the All-American Boy." But, of course, all that changed once H-B and Screen Gems/Columbia went into co-production for its one-and-only season in primetime (circa 1964)! And, while some episodes definitely foretold of things like video cellphones (aka the viewcom) and weaponized e-m-p (aka the Para-power Gun), other stories like "Shadow Of The Condor" (involving a crazy German air ace from WWI) are unfortunately outdated.

A lot of these cartoons came out in 1967 - 1968, which was the sweet spot for me. Note tha Bridman, Space Ghost, Mightor etc. were also re-shown in the late 1970s in the "Hanna-Barbera World of Super Adventure". That timing was great as the memory of my favorites was starting to fade - this show brought them back to life for me, I read the "Future Quest" series in it's entirety. I loved what they did for my favorite, Birdman. In the cartoons, he had a very limited supply of solar energy, and got very weak when it was depleted. The "Future Quest" series and the subsequent books focused on Birdman did not go there. Recharging was mentioned, but that was about it.
@WayneKeen2 жыл бұрын
Note that in the "Future Quest" books that focused on Space Ghost, there is only one reference to the (overused in the cartoons) villain removing his power bands, and in that case Metallus indicated that there were safeguards that preventing him for doing that.
@WayneKeen2 жыл бұрын
On another unrelated related note, I have thought that music from these series could be packaged in a manner similar to what NFL Films did with their music. Note that I mean something more than the opening/closing credit stuff. I mean the music that makes the action sequences of the cartoons cooler. I wonder if it even exists in someone's vaults any more?
@WayneKeen2 жыл бұрын
@Aristophanes Garcia Did you like the way that Future Quest gave characters like Space Ghost and Birdman minor updates that avoided the overused stuff like "I've been away from the rays of the sun too long" and "I can't....reach....my power bands" from the cartoons? I sure did.

A few 60/70s Hanna-Barbera super hero toons you forgot to honorable mention: Young Sampson; Hong Kong Phooey; and Wonder Wheels. I used to get excited when thee shows would pop up on _USA's Cartoon Express_ and later on _Boomerang._ H-B *also* did some kick ass versions of Marvel Characters (The Fantastic 4).

I always thought that The Herculoids was the closest thing that Hanna-Barbera ever got to the Toho 1960s Godzilla films at the time.

You kinda missed two important ones "Challenge of the Superfriends" in 1978 which way better than the 1974 "Super friends". It introduced the Hall of Doom which which were classic DC villains lead by Lex Luthor with much better story lines. Also the most underrated cartoon "Thundarr The Barbarian" in 1980 which is the only action adventure cartoon set in a post-apocalyptic setting that I can think of. One of the best settings for any action cartoon. You also missed the great "Planet of the Apes" cartoons they did in the early 1970's.

Thundarr was pretty good, but I was always surprised it wasn't even better once I saw who was in the credits -- Alex Toth, Doug Wildey, and Jack Kirby! And the Planet of the Apes cartoon was another Wildey project -- he felt it was even better than JQ!

On a side note I would add Ted Turner was a brilliant businessman. Instead of buying the rights to play all and any Hanna Barbera Cartoons on his network (TBS). He bought the entire company, catalog and exclusive rights. I am still Captain Planet fan to this day. Along with many of H.B. many other cartoons.

Nice video brother. I’ve never told anyone this but I’m 34 years old. I graduated early at 16, college at 20, honors student all the way thru…. And it took me until I was like 25 years old to realize that SpaceGhost and Johnny Quest were shows from the 60s. I was never a fan of them on Cartoon Network and by the time I paid them any attention as an older teen, I just assumed they had that retro look as a stylistic choice because cartoon network was more niche and unique than Nickelodeon and Disney with the art styles. Then one day my dad saw Johnny quest randomly flipping and mentioned it from his child hood and I was like do-huhhhhhh? Lol
