This damn song has always been like a internal switchblade that just cuts you up on the inside, {if you have a soul), to this very day. Very few artists have came along with 'Heaven-Blessed' voices like this that melt your heart and soul in such a joyful way. R'I.P., big Marvin, and I appreciate you for presenting this to us. Check out Marvin's 'It's too late' if you haven't done so already. I rest my case.

The hook for me on this song is the distant call in the backgroupd (Ooooooooo) when Marvin Gaye is singing. Great song.

For me Marvin and Luther were ''KING'' in this genre ,two of my favs - Check out Luther Vandross LIVE '' House is not a home '' 1988 NAACP performance , and watch Dionne Warwick and Co get all giddy on Luther's mind blowing vocals.

Marvin did his own backup vocals always, but he also did duets and Tammy Terrell and Marvin together were absolutely insane!

Now you must listen to the version of this song he recorded live in Oakland in 1974. Completely different energy. You'll get goose bumps.

"When you left you took all of me with you" If that line/crescendo doesn't hit you with a sledgehammer then you must be dead inside. What happened to love songs in the modern era?

THANK YOU, for introducing this song of Marvin Gaye to me I hadn't heard it before this song would be great to slow dancing too, oh my gosh. I remember singing "Let's get it On" around the house and my father asked me to find another song to sing. At the time in my life I actually didn't get understand what I was singing. Enjoyed your review. I appreciate your interest in the Oldies but Goodies. Stay safe and healthy, God bless

You can keep on "dippin" into the R&B. Beautiful and soulful. Sometime give Michael McDonald's cover a listen. I didn't think anyone could do this better than Marvin Gaye, but see what you think.

Roberta Flack is a good choice, but you might also enjoy "Gladys Knight and the Pips". Gladys has some lovely songs, and she is quite old now but she can still perform beautifully!

Motown is the place to go for the best R&B. Try Barry White and the Temptations. It's going to be hard to figure out which song gave you life because they were all just plain love songs like no other. I see another rabbit hole in your future.

The Live version which was a hit in 1974 is far superior to this version due to the women screaming and the intensity of Marvin's vocals-you really need to search for that version-it's on the Marvin Gaye Live album (1974).

His live version of this song is better.. It outsold the studio version. Live at the Oakland Collision in 1974.
