I'm 81 and have been digging clams since I was probably 7 years old. We lived near the beach and now I live at the beach. We didn't have tubes in those days only shovels. What did you do with the digger? The foot that they use to dig? That is the best part of the clam. You slit it open and it looks like a butterfly. You scrape out the nasty brown stuff. That's what you fry and they are so tender. The other part is tough so you grind that up and make chowder. Glad you knew about the clams purging in saltwater but if you don't submerge them completely and they're still alive, you dip them for about 2 seconds in boiling water then plunge in cold water, they literally fall out of the shell. My parents never did this, I think they thought it would make the clams tough. I don't know if clams feel pain but I clean them so fast, literally seconds, to lessen their suffering in case they do.

Them are the smallest razor clams I've ever seen for a limit in the evergreen state... I'm sorry no one showed you the good spots ta dig there. Oh ya the reason your not supposed ta let them go is because when you dig them up their shell's can get cracked not because they kan't dig a hole in sand they live in. If you soak them in fresh water they will open up for you.

I'm surprised the fellows from addicted didn't give some more tips. I've seen many commented about just use a piece of plywood. It works great. You can attach it to the tailgate or not. As to the folks who were mentioning that you can drop them into boiling water for a few seconds or so. Sure you can do that, but it's really not necessary. Just something you have to set up than latter put away. So I don't waist my time with the hot water. However opening them up is different from what you did. And ALWAYS save the tip from the neck, also called a siphon. Just about the best fish bait there is. Infact use one of the necks and cut into small pieces about the size of the tip for bait. My normal routine at the beach is get down to the beach in time to dig clams. Normally only takes about 15 minutes to limit. Get off the beach, clean the clams and get to bed. Next morning get up and go surf fishing ( remember surf perch are not the only fish you can catch) but those little pieces of clam are the best bait. And keep your eyes open for Dungeness. Once you learn what to look for in the sand it's surprising how many you can get while fishing. Like I mentioned in your surf perch video if you come back out here again, contact me on your comments that you would like to learn more about fishing, clamming, etc. out here and how to cook them for best results. I'll get you hooked up. I've traveled to every state in the lower 48 and honestly I don't think any other state has the all year long abundance that we have. Good luck. Stay safe and enjoy great food. 😃👍🐟🎣🦀🦐🦪🦑🍻

I made a flat tailgate on my 2014 F150 with a piece of 1/4" plywood. Only tricky part was lining up the holes for the screws, and then finding the right size screws to fit, as some of the stock screws were too long (my truck had the hand rail for the step bar--I wanted a flat surface, so had to delete the hand rail).

Hey Maverick, for the tailgate of your f-150 you should try and use some UHMW material, it’s basically just Polyurethane with a range of different thicknesses. It would be pretty easy to cut out yourself. Great for filleting salmon! Love you content man! Come do some trout fishing in central Oregon sometime, we have some really great scenery too!

A trick we use for little neck clams on the east coast is the submerge them in water with baking soda and they spit out all the sand. We do big batches of steamed clams and we also do baked clams with butter garlic white wine lemon juice and parsley

I like to use a knife to get the meat off the shells. Then scissors to actually clean the clam meat. Might make it easier next time.

My parents moved from Minnesota to Washington State in 1942 and said that Washington was God's country. Doesn't get below zero in the western part, we don't have mosquitoes the size of hummingbirds, and we don't have to eat lutefisk.

Is a fishing license required for every state you fish in? I would think that would get expensive.

Hey Mav, why don’t you just get a couple of plastic cutting boards and screw them into the tail gate? Or just get a length of the same material as the cutting board from Loews, or Home Depot, cut it the same length as the tail gate guard and screw that in and, Voila, built in cutting board. You’d just need some bleach water to sanitize. Just a thought from an old Chef. 😁

Pour hot water on them and it opens the shell. Then use scissors to cut down the siphon hole on the belly side. then the next siphon and it will butterfly open. Cut off the gut sack and clear stymie and discard it. I remove the digger (foot) to eat separate because it's the best part and where the fat is. I also cut off the siphon to grind for clam patties. Do a quick fry, battered or not and eat it like candy. Don't forget the little mussel that holds the shell shut. They're like mini scallops. Also if you dig a small one then move a ways away to see if they get bigger. I've dug hundreds that the shell is as long as your hand and we call them Moss Backs because they are dark on the hinge side. One of the many perks living next to the ocean in Washington and Alaska.
