I believe it was the era he competed in. from 84 to 90, lee had no real challengers. I guess if Lou Ferrigno had been competing then it would have been more interesting. Dorian beat many great names, and Arnold beat Sergio, making them both more known for there wins.

Yeah, his front double biceps is underrated! But I'm always going to go with Arnold for the GOAT title. If he had kept competing he would have won the 76-79 Mr Olympias, and probably the 81-83 as well bringing his total to 13. I don't think he'd beat Lee Haney on stage, but it's possible - but either way I just love Arnold's iconic poses.

I lean towards Haney over Yates, but it's a close call. I think Haney's symmetry beats Yate's mass. Yates is better conditioned though. He was also surprisingly symmetrical for a mass monster. Arnold could have beaten both those guys had he competed in the 80s and 90s. He's still the only Mr. O' over 6 ft tall. Who knows how he would have filled out with modern pharma...er...training methods.

Haney's symmetry does not beat Yates' mass because symmetry is not as important in bb-ing. Mass and conditioning are 2 pillars of the sport, everything else is a distant 2nd. Yates beats Haney in the mandatory poses (basically this comparison of 8 poses right here) in 1991 when he was much smaller than his 1993 self. If he did it then, his 1993 self would decimate Haney even more.

I have nothing against Arnold but it's a fact Joe Wieder kept Sergio Olivia out of Olympia competitions because he wanted Arnold a white immigrant as the face of bodybuilding and not a black immigrant. I'm not saying he wouldn't have Mr Olympia titles but he wouldn't have as many.

How you could choose Yates over Arnold or Haney is insane to me. Both Arnie and Lee are significantly more aesthetic than Yates is. Look at Lee and Arnie with plenty of mass but also shape. Look at their incredible vacuums compared to Yates’ bubble gut. Yates was the beginning of the end for the legitimacy of bodybuilding. How people worship him is beyond me. He was a giant glob of veiny muscle with no shape or grace whatsoever. He was the total end of aesthetics and the beginning of the mass monsters, which, as we all know, at this point in time has gotten completely out of hand.

I thought the same. Even at only 245 pounds at his biggest he looks as thick as the shorter guys who have more weight. I think it’s because they carry a little more weight in their legs than Arnold so Arnold had compatible mass in the upper body and the narrow leg taper makes his upper body look even bigger.

I would love to agree with you but he was aging by that point and I think would have been pretty warn especially if he had been consistent in that period training hard and such. but in saying that look at lou (ferrigno) in '93 after all... I think arnold could have gone good till maybe 1990. after all frank zane was still going till '85 and is 5 years older than arnold himself.

Yates wins, it's not even close. He clearly wins 5 shots : - Side Tricep - Rear Lat Spread - Back Double Bicep - Front Lat Spread - Abs & Thighs "Lights Out". If the photos were HD Yates would only win by more. His hard grainy conditioning which you can see a bit of in the Back Double Bicep shot is just too much. No wonder Lee retired early.

To put this into perspective though, Dorian Yates was 5' 10" tall, Lee Haney was 5' 11' tall and Arnold was 6' 2" tall meaning he would have towered over both Lee and Dorian but, in these pictures they appear to be the same height. It's never going to be an 'apples verses apples' situation but a large part of Arnolds impact was that he was able to look this good whilst being considerably taller and therefore much bigger than most of the others. Lou Ferrigno was 2 inches taller than Arnold but never managed look as good. That said all three here are hugely impressive and I think it comes down to personal choice as to which is best.

double arm overhead abs & thigh exposes the waist and abs separation. That's why all the guys with poor abs (iain valliere, william bonac, hunter labrada) mostly choose to not hit it that way. Gotta give props for Phil Heath for always taking it head on. He would have probably been better off showcasing his obliques in the one-arm overhead variation but then again given his distended midsection it wouldn't have looked good regardless

Not to take credit out of Arnold and his legacy, but you usually hear people say that he was aesthetic compared to modern open class bodybuilders. Here, however, you can see that his midsection is so blocky that even Dorian (due to his gigantic lats though), the first mass monster and with a thick waist himself, has a better V taper than him.

Honestly I think Arnold sort of got out at the right time, I think the sport was still evolving, for example it’s clear that if Haney or can you imagine Sergio Oliva competing with the same drugs that Haney and Yates had ? The more I look back on it it makes me wonder if Arnold and a few of them didn’t have access to much better and higher dosages of gear being they were pretty much sponsored by Weider with all the money. The more I look at it the more I think a lot of it was who is willing to take the most drugs
