Don't forget, Mike Mentzer won the Olympia Heavyweight Class the year before, and for many, Mike was the favorite to win it in 1980. Mike placing 5th, and Arnold winning, made most think the fix was in. Mike and the others that boycotted, in my opinion should have started a new Federation, or moved en masse to another, like the WBBG or such.

I'm glad you mentioned about the judges, it shows Arnold was not above outright cheating and manipulating the event to his advantage. Arnold has no honor, as he has shown many times during his life. I can see through his BS even when he is on a typical talk-show. But the problem is, when a person does great things during their life, people will overlook the bad. There are many examples of this with celebrities, athletes and even certain politicians. There are just some people who have no shame.

Putting the Arnold controversy aside, it's very interesting to see how evenly matched the field of competitors was and how divided the opinions are as to who should have been the actual winner of this competition. In my opinion Chris Dickerson and Boyer Coe brought the best package to the stage overall. With mike mentzer I feel on some pictures you can see that he overdid it with his diet, which made him look flat at times. Even though I think that Arnold should not have won this one I think he didn't look as bad as many made it out to be. Actually Francos win in 1981 was a lot worse.

It’s like this, everyone was in shape including Arnold, if any of the final 8 had won you couldn’t say it was fixed or they didn’t deserve it. Arnold walks on stage, in shape, ripped looking awe inspiring as usual and no can compete with that double biceps or the three quarter double rear biceps. At 40 seconds, Its clearly a 3 man race between Arnold, Roger Walker and Mike Mentzer. Arnold's legs eliminate him in my opinion. Walker is a monster. At 80 percent of his best Arnold was head and shoulders over everyone. His structure makes Arnold the winner and his calves made his legs look good even though down in size. His posing was more on point in his routine. All in all Arnold looked overall the best but barely.

That sounds about right. He lost in 72 against Sergio yet was gifted the Sandow. Weider wanted Arnold to be the face of bodybuilding for the 70’s and rigged the 71 Olympia so that only Arnold was competing. Arnold was done by 75, his joints suffering from the wear and tear of lifting heavy. Maybe he could have won in 76 but he was already on the downward slide.

Arnold at 215 lbs STIlL dwarfed everyone. Legs were downsized but he still has separation. Best arms, back, chest and calves. It was only “close” because of his legs. Nothing really controversial about the placing. What was really at the heart of the matter is he didn’t file the paperwork to compete at the competition which irked people. But Arnold couldn’t file because he wasn’t certain he’s compete and didn’t want to take shine away from everyone if he changed his mind. Also, there was no booing. And the reason it didn’t air on tv was because they ran out of film before the final was over not because it was controversial lol

Seen a lot of pictures and commentary on the 1980 Mr Olympia and I have to say that by any standard Arnold should not have placed any higher than 5th. It is not just a matter of Arnolds legs, but his condition, his abs and his back were all way below the standard of the other top competitors. From the rear Arnold is the least impressive of all the top competitors. His back lacks thickness and detail, his hamstrings and glutes are poor, and even his calves are outmatched by the other top competitors. His physique from the front lacks detail, and while his arms were still the best, his once dominant chest was nothing special. At the time aesthetics, lines, proportion and conditioning ruled and in that respect Zane, Dickerson, Coe and Mentzer were all better. Zane had the best condition on stage then Dickerson, but Dickerson did not have the best shape or structure. For me Zane still won this, then it is either Coe or Mentzer, with Dickerson fourth, then maybe Arnold.

@Old Skool Bodybuilding Routines my eyesight is actually very good and I have followed bodybuilding since the mid 80's. I have also competed. Not really sure which contest you were looking at but my statement that "Arnold should not have placed higher than 5th" is absolutely justified. He was the worst conditioned of all the top competitors, and was also not the most muscular. Had Arnold come in equivalent condition to the other competitors he would have been a lot smaller. At the time (Late 70's) conditioning, muscle separation, and aesthetics were much more important than they are now, hence the reason that Dickerson and Zane finished ahead of Coe and Mentzer. However the judging criteria seems to have been abandoned when evaluating Arnold. If muscle mass had been the dominant criteria Arnold would still not win as both Mentzer and Walker were carrying more muscle, and with better condition. Simply put ... " there is no criteria where Arnold wins this show", if it is judged on aesthetics and conditioning then Zane wins, if it is judged on conditioned mass then it is probably Mentzer.

Before you offer your ill considered view I would suggest that you consider the facts in the first instance, and the overwhelming view of the bodybuilding community and the competitors at the time. To be honest your response and analysis is actually child like, and I was half expecting some personal abuse with a liberal scattering of expletives. What is a 'Mr Olympia' title worth if you are remembered as a cheating scoundrel? Blind Freddy can see this 'contest' was a joke!... There was no 'contest', it was a show, the Arnold show, with many of his wide eyed adoring fans in the positions of promoter & judging...Nothing more than a publicity stunt To cheat the other competitors out of any chance of winning, after some of them had trained and dieted for the previous year specifically for this event and had flown across the world... only to be shafted by a megalomaniac! Apparently there are no lows Arnold will not stoop too... Tom Platz, who idolised Arnold, made the mistake of letting him know, and only him, that he had a torn left bicep going into the 82 Olympia... Platz was in great shape and a strong contender, he was called out of the line up to do a left bicep pose!... No title for Tom... Thanks Arnold!! To make a complete joke of bodybuildings top title, Franco Columbu, looking worse than Arnold the previous Olympia, beat Tom Platz & Danny Padilla in the best shapes of their career... Columbu should not have been standing among the finalists, never mind 'win' the thing! Arnold would not need to cheat his way to the Mr Arsehole title...he would win that one, hands down with no controversy

Unfortunately for all the crybabies, Arnold was not competing against himself from the 70s. He is clearly the most impressive of that lineup. Zane looks like a swimmer. Mentzer was flat and had no chest and Dickerson is bottom heavy with tiny arms. Arnold is Numero Uno. Just my opinion, I was bodybuilding in 1980. Love the channel Mark!

People keep saying Arnold Schwarzenegger cheated are 100% wrong. He won because he had the best physique. If you understand human anatomy, Arnold has total proportion of body muscles. People are saying he should have lost because he didn't look better than himself 4 years earlier. That is an ignorance comment. Even though he didn't look better than himself before, but he did look way better than anyone in this competition. All judges agreed that he won fair & square. People need to stop being sore losers & move on.
