Mary Beard, Cambridge University. This six-part lecture series examines the continuing engagement throughout history with images of Roman emperors and its impact on Western visual art and culture.
In this second lecture, originally delivered at the National Gallery of Art on April 3, 2011, the esteemed classicist and professor Mary Beard traces the emergence of imperial portraits, their role in the iconography of Roman power, and their shifting interpretations and latent significances in the modern world.

I behan being interested in 'ancient being cool' as a small child, and through most of those years there was no Mary Beard to convey comfort in gaining ground unless on your own. Her humble speech and demeanor carries confidence of knowledge without academic narrowness and positioning. This? Mentors naturally so one can connect as a human citizen of shared culture without unnecessary distancing and fear of your own path. So much can be learned of our modern selves by connecting to this past not to avoid pitfalls per se? But to more fully appreciate our future as it arrives in our present. Mary is special in this way, and Rome lives strong in us all make no mistake....she shows us.

41:06 "Charles I was assassinated in the name of democracy..." Either Prof Beard is a cavalier or she is playing to the audience. Formally Charles I was convicted on a charge of treason against the people (as he couldn't commit treason against himself). This specific use of "the people" inspired the USA's theory of sovereignty: "We, the people...". This is quite different from "democracy" as the Founders well knew.

obnoxious introduction. "We have no real clue about the means of dissemination of the images of Juliius Caesar." I think yes, there were models ahipped to major Roman centers from a central model hub. It's interesting that Roman cults of personality held different dimensions than modern iterations of the technique...due to ancient idol worship and religion, such that a runway slave could in certain circumstances gain sanctuary by clinging to a statue of one.
