Mary Greenwell: How to Make Up Hooded Eyes

A few months ago we asked you all what type of Mary Greenwell makeup videos you would like to see from us at Get The Gloss. Thank you so much for your responses. We took your replies on board and have now created a series of four videos with Mary that hopefully answer many of your questions and makeup queries. In this first one Mary focusses on hooded eyes as well as many of your other queries. The model is Susannah , Editor of Get The Gloss, age 40. Enjoy!

Firstly, to hydrate the skin and combat dryness Mary uses La Solution 10 de CHANEL, £58 (bit.ly/1TWo1kr). Made up from only 10 ingredients, this moisturiser is perfect to soothe and combat any irritation on the skin.
Mary uses the CHANEL Hydra Beauty Micro Gel Yeux, £44 (tidd.ly/4cc10b05) to hydrate the delicate under eye area.
To add moisture and a little bit of coverage, Mary uses the CHANEL CC Cream Complete Correction SPF50 in 10, £44 (tidd.ly/acfa59a2) to protect and perfect the base and give Susannah's skin a healthy glow.
Mary uses concealer whether it's needed or not. She takes the CHANEL Correcteur Perfection Long Lasting Concealer in 10, £27 (tidd.ly/65a52d14) and sweeps it under the eyes and then pats it in, bringing it down further.
Mary then moves onto Susannah's eyes showing how to make up hooded eyes. She uses the CHANEL Les 4 Ombres Multi-effects Quadra Eyeshadow in Tissé Essentiel, £40 (tidd.ly/34fa687c) with the CHANEL Concealer Brush No.10, £21(tidd.ly/8b2917e5) and highlights the brow bone using the lightest shade and then brushes the soft golden brown shade across the lower lid.
Mary then takes the slightly darker shade and uses this to create an eye socket giving the impression that the bone is higher and the eye being bigger and blends the shadow in to make it look as though it is her real eye. The matte brown shade is then brought under the eye and blended.
Mary then uses the CHANEL Le Crayon Yeux Precision Eye Definer in Brun, £17 (tidd.ly/c91a83bf) and takes it all along the eyelid, feathering out at the ends and then again along the roots of the bottom lashes. She then tightlines the eye, applying it to the inside waterline of the upper lashes to make the eyes pop.
Mary then takes the matte brown shadow from the CHANEL Les 4 Ombres Multi-effects Quadra Eyeshadow in Tissé Essentiel, £40 (tidd.ly/34fa687c) and using the CHANEL Lip Brush No.33, £22 (tidd.ly/42876dd9) she applies it to centre of the eye to define the eye before feathering the beige shade along the bottom lash line.
Onto the mascara and Mary uses her favourite Le Volume Ultra Noir de CHANEL in Noir Kôhl, £25 (tidd.ly/7b3a76fb) for thickening and lengthening and applies it right to the roots of the top lashes and along the bottom lashes.
Mary keeps Susannah's brows bare after brushing through with the CHANEL Brow/Lash Brush No.11, £17 (tidd.ly/60a3affa) to make sure that the eye doesn't look heavier.
To add life back into Susannah's skin, Mary uses the CHANEL Les Beiges Healthy Glow Multi Colour in Duo no.2 Pink (Limited Edition - launches 27th May 2016) and takes the rounded side of the brush and the highlight shade and applies to the top of Susannah's cheekbones to add a subtle shimmer. Then taking the round end of the brush, Mary then dusts the pink shade over the apples of Susannah's cheeks.
To add a bit of colour to the skin and boost the skin overall, Mary uses CHANEL Les Beiges Healthy Glow Sheer Powder SPF 15 /PA++ in 30, £39 (tidd.ly/a0dd6082). Blending this across the skin and into the hairline and neck, Mary uses this to add the warmth back into Susannah's skin.
To make Susannah's lips appear bigger, Mary overlines the lips slightly following the natural shape and line of the lips using the CHANEL Le Crayon Lèvres Precision Lip Definer in Natural, £17.50 (tidd.ly/44f70b7f) and fills the lips in a little. To add a bit more colour on the lips, Mary applies the CHANEL Rouge Coco Ultra Hydrating Lip Colour in Mademoiselle, £26 (tidd.ly/60265052) to the lips and softens the edges to make it look as real as possible.
To finish the look and set it all in place, Mary uses the CHANEL Poudres Universelle Natural Finish Pressed Powder in 20, £33 (tidd.ly/d6fd9e7e) with the CHANEL Foundation Brush No.6, £30 (tidd.ly/82e2365b) to the the skin.

You can tell when a MUA has got lots and lots experience when he/she just knows when to add and when to skip certain products to perfectly customise it to their customer... We see so many "MUAs" atm who just do the same look on everyone without any thought or knowledge. It's so refreshing to see someone truly experienced like Mary... And I love her quotes haha X

TheCostaChic yes exactly. One thing that bothers me is when "makeup artists" contour every face, every time, always the same. Especially contouring a tiny forehead with a low hairline.

She is the one of the greatest make up artist, but I just don't like how she's treating this women, especially because she's her employee. Mary was talking about her like she's old lady, in fact she's young women and her body-language revealed that she's annoyed by Mary. I had impression that Susannah was very uncomfortable all the time.. And I don't agree about age range for red lipstick. Half of Hollywood should stop to wear red lipstick, because they are between 38 and 60. If Mary says that to Jessica Chastain (she's 40) or to any of her A list clients, Mary could lose her job..

tinama I think you’re being too pressed. She said at 5:14 that she wouldn’t say Susie is a old model or a young model she’s just in between and the way to take care a make up a face is the same in all ages “using what is meant to your skin type”. Another thing, it’s 2020 my dear.. time to quit this mindset of being old be a bad thing and associating be called or call someone old or mature to offense. We’re all gonna get old If we’re lucky enough.

so refreshing to hear someone say hooded eyes arent a "problem". i have uneven lids (one hooded one not) and i used to be very insecure about the hooded one bc everyone made it sound ugly. now ive learned to work with it and embrace it bc it adds to my individual beauty. also love the hair mary 💖

I'm only 4m into the video and I've already learned quite a bit. This is an ideal tutorial for me...very pale body, my face tends to be darker/yellow-toned (other than my rosacea), naturally red highlights, hooded eyelids and I'm 42. And I tend to overheat very easily. That's the joy of Fibromyalgia. Mary Greenwell tutorials are a gift, I love and look forward to them.

The Mary pummel seems to be almost equal to facial massage. Smart thing to do before makeup, I reckon. That makeup took an immediate 5 years off her face (not that she needed it). Love your work, Mary :)

I'm 62 so I can be eccentric now lol! I stopped wearing dark lipsticks about ten years ago as I noticed they accentuated my thinning lips. I do so love a good red lipstick though, but it just does nothing for me anymore. I love Mary's approach and skill and I am going to refer to this video from now on because my eyes are very hooded and Mary's technique is the best I've seen.

Sometimes I feel so ugly with my hooded eyes but then I think about actresses like Cate Blanchett, Camille Belle, Blake Lively, … and I remember that hooded eyes can be beautiful as well. Just look at this model for example! Her makeup came out looking gorgeous! Mary is incredibly talented, loved the final look.

Hooded eyes have the advantage of being beautifully and naturally almond-shaped. I routinely tightline between the upper lashes, using a tapered tip brush and only liquid or gel liner to line most of the eye--not to the inner corner.

This makeup looks great! It's both fresh and very appropriate. Often women who are not close to 21 anymore go for some ridiculous makeup, and while younger girl can manage it (they are young and not as wise, we sort of forgive that silliness), women who have kids in college or older just look silly. It's great to know how to do makeup and look great at that age!

OMG ! Love the makeup! I have hooded eyes too and this eye makeup is amazing! But I'am also Chinese so I wonder if the same technique works for me. Please consider doing a look on Chinese features, I have hooded smaller and rounder eyes, I haven't worn eyeshadows because i have dark undereye circles as well so i feel darker eyeshadows seems to emphasise them... thanks

I only ever used to use a tiny bit of eye concealer. From now on, I'm going to really boost the amount of concealer and how far down it goes on the face. I wonder what kinds of concealers are her favorites? At the moment I'm using a Clarins one I read about on a blog that I've been quite happy with! Mary is absolutely so talented. Love her videos!!!!
