Those days were days for me in the 80's!! How I miss the family and friends that are not longer with me. As Oscar Wilde said, "youth is wasted on the young". How true!!!
@tatyanabeylin65386 жыл бұрын
the song was performed by many singers: gypsy, russian french, english, american. Even considered to be a "folk" song. But there is a talented man behind this sweet melody. Boris Fomin created this song in 1917th, Sankt-Peterburg, Russia. Words by Konstantin Podrevskiy, were added, or changed to in 1924. Lost love, pain caused by parting, long road through the night..

I remember as a young person back in the 1970s seeing a programme with old age pensioners talking about their youth and saying, "Everything's changed beyond recognition now." I thought, "What do they mean, what's changed?" I saw the programme again recently and understood exactly how they felt. This comes to every generation.

What a wonderful song. As I get older the lyrics have a deeper and richer meaning to me than when I listened to it when I was younger. It speaks to me of my own experiences with friends of long ago... It does not bring back bittersweet memories, but fond and joyful memories of a life well lived :)

@saltyshackle67774 ай бұрын
@@Horzinicla In an small African country called Equatorial Guinea from the years 1968 to 1979, the country was under the dictatorship of Francisco Macias Nguema. His reign was described as the "Dachau of Africa" and he one point described himself as a "Hitlerian Marxist". Equatorial Guinea saw some of the most extensive human violations during his presidency, with 50,000-80,000 people being killed out the countries population of 300,000. His most notorious crime was in 1969, when he had 186 alleged dissidents shot, hanged or eaten by fire ants at the national stadium. During the massacre, the executioners were wearing Santa costumes, while this very song was playing in the background. Eventually, after being ousted in a coup by his nephew and the current president of the country Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, where he was later put on trial for genocide in which he was convicted and later executed for. TLDR: this song was played during the mass killing of almost 200 people, while the gunmen were dressed in Santa costumes in the African country Equatorial Guinea in 1969.

rushing by us ! not washing by us ;-) Those Were The Days Lyrics Once upon a time there was a tavern Where we used to raise a glass or two Remember how we laughed away the hours And dreamed of all the great things we would do Those were the days my friend We thought they'd never end We'd sing and dance forever and a day We'd live the life we choose We'd fight and never lose For we were young and sure to have our way. La la la la... Those were the days, oh yes those were the days Then the busy years went rushing by us We lost our starry notions on the way If by chance I'd see you in the tavern We'd smile at one another and we'd say Those were the days my friend We thought they'd never end We'd sing and dance forever and a day We'd live the life we choose We'd fight and never lose For we were young and sure to have our way. La la la la... Those were the days, oh yes those were the days Just tonight I stood before the tavern Nothing seemed the way it used to be In the glass I saw a strange reflection Was that lonely woman really me Those were the days my friend We thought they'd never end We'd sing and dance forever and a day We'd live the life we choose We'd fight and never lose For we were young and sure to have our way. La la la la... Those were the days, oh yes those were the days Through the door there came familiar laughter I saw your face and heard you call my name Oh my friend we're older but no wiser For in our hearts the dreams are still the same Those were the days my friend We thought they'd never end We'd sing and dance forever and a day We'd live the life we choose We'd fight and never lose For we were young and sure to have our way. We were a crew, my two friends and me. From our big friend group to the poing where everyone's gone their separate ways. Today, randomly the three of us decided to hang out again. And everything was as we left it 12 years ago. All of those serious talks, sitting on "our" bench, drinking cheap beers and in the end laughing until tears. Our small city changed, the faces around us were unfamiliar and so was the case in our lives. God, I almost started crying hearing them laugh once again. Nothing in our lives was as simple and nonchalant as it was all those years ago. Reality hit us badly. We've lost friends and loved ones and with every passing day our existence has become more complicated yet. All of us lost the glimmer in our eyes we had. But tonight I saw the glimpse of glimmer even in passing. I'm moving to another country far away soon and so is another one of them. The number of times we can repeat this is numbered. But God, I love you guys. Nothing in the world compares. You created a small infinity with our endless numbered days ❤

I have a vivid memory of being in the car with my mom when I was a young kid and my mom turning up the radio when thos song came on and singing along without a care in the world. That was about 52 years ago. One year ago my mom left this world. I play this song from time to time just to take me back to that moment in time. I miss you mom. I'll see you again someday.

Yesssssssssss, this s it , this is it, I love this song and love the people who love this song. It was the time, it was the year , it was the Mary, and God locked it, in her success, in our memories, in our lives, for ever to eternity.

3:16 I have known this song since is was a child, I would always listen to my parents music of all genres and enjoy the nostalgia that came with it, but in recent years loosing my identical twin brother Richard ,my Grandad and Dad in four years the story becomes my reality and gives bittersweet comfort ❤❤

I loved this song when I first heard it played on the radio . I was in my early teens. With the touch of Paul McCartney , and the magic voice of Mary Hopkins this song is enjoyed forever!

I was nine years old when this song was getting a lot of air play. I loved it then and I still love it fourty nine years later. In two months this song will be fifty years old. Except now it has so much more depth having clocked fifty years since it was on the charts.

@@ohlawd4455 Her best album, in my opinion, was SOMETHING TO REMEMBER. Madonna does great with the ballads. Some of her other stuff was nonsensical.

Yeah, back before RAP dragged the whole music industry down into the gutter. Exceptions: Country/Folk music - relatively unscathed by Rap Classical - I guess Rap has no use for well-written well-performed music most of which was written to celebrate /glorify God. {Can't have God in Rap, negates the onslaught of anger}

Since the first time I listened to this song, it became my favorite. The lyrics sound like telling us our own story.

I “got” this song when it came out... I was 10. I have a clear memory of the past but the older I get the less I cling to it. Not sure why. So this song was more emotional to me 54 years ago than it is now.

I loved this song. It was so.."odd" at the time that it was charming. It grew on you. Very catchy and kitchy ...it just had that something that you could not forget..or escape from. Its funny how 50 years ago with all the turmoil of that year a song like this came out of left field and became such a big hit. I appreciated it then..and love it even more today. ✌

I wonder what the origins of this song are. It seems to have a strong European flair, mixed with a Russian polka type tempo. I could imagine it coming out just after world war two. Mary Hopkin, huh. I never knew that. I have almost, and I mean almost, never heard this song since I was 7 or 8 when my older sister sang it. Indelibly etched into my memory. Wow, what a trip. So my sister didn't just make it up. Thanks for the post.
