I remember playing this to my daughter when she was 10; i thought it would be a generic kitchen dance. Her mouth opened, she asked me to sit down and listen. She would often bang this out in her teens and her mates. A true soul song. Thank you Mary, for being a true part of our family soul.

I checked out the 1st time I heard this song in 2002. Alive or not, Mary gave me permission to scream the same words. Regardless of the calendar you use as a metric, it is 2002 America, for a hopeless Chicago woman bearing my name.

I truly believe people were delivered from oppression through this song. This was not a performance. This was an anointed moment in time. Some years ago I adopted this as my anthem. I went back to school and got my Bachelors Degree and got serious about my business. Thanks Mary for letting God use you.
@TinaReggie Жыл бұрын
Congrats on getting your degree. 🎉 This is my theme song, too. Only it's my own mind that creates the drama. Severe anxiety. I'm going to be okay one day soon. God is my guide. Anyway....maybe TMI but everyone has their issues and can relate to Mary's drama or their own.

I think this could be one of the greatest live performances ever recorded. The most heartfelt and raw performance I ever watched. I remember recording it onto a VHS tape and taking it up to visit a mate in Aberdeen - a great musician in his own right. It had the same effect on him as it did with me. He was moved to tears after witnessing the artist bravely bearing the depths of her soul, purging herself of a lifetime of agony and pain. This is a woman exorcising her psychological, emotional and physical demons in a moment of triumphant, defiant and spiritual transcendence. I don't believe you can call it a performance. I believe we are watching the metamorphosis of an artist in the flesh. Mary J sacrificed everything of her herself and exposed the inherent vulnerability and strength of the human spirit for the betterment of humanity .God bless her.
