This performance and song extremely meaningful for her. She was recovering from an abusive relationship she hadn't been too long gotten away from. She was also recovering from a bad drug habit too. This song means alot to her.

This performance was RAW and REAL. She brought the lyrics to life because it was her life. She poured her energy in at 175%! There was no choreography, no rehearsed steps. She sang from her SOUL. This is an artist who can fit in with almost any genre of music. She can stand toe to toe with performers from different genres, singing as a duo, or singing harmony or melody. She's not a Celine or a Whitney. She IS Mary J Blige and there is no one else like her. NO ONE. And this song alone proves it. As well as the My Life album.

This performance is really special and I come back to it annually. Definitely in my Top 3 Grammy performances of all time and potentially my #1. I've never been a big MJB fan but you could tell she had been through some stuff and had come out on the other side of it by this time (healed but scarred in a sense). This felt like a personal testimony for sure and she gave them everything she had that night 🗣 The standing ovation was deserved. Glad you all were able to experience it for the 1st time!

I've watched every live performance of No More Drama by Mary and honestly, they all give me chills (her performance in Italy takes the crown though). She brings something different each time and each performance feels like it's the first time shes signing this song. She is by far one of my favourite artists to watch live because of how she manages to evoke so much emotion no matter the song, show or circumstance. Consistently incredible. Mary is such a legend!

That wave at the end felt to me like she was spent. She gave everything she had into the message she came to deliver. She was done. Loved it. She did take us to church, and I don't like church, but I loved this! ❤

Ok so I am going to say this, in light of all the things that has come to pass in today’s current events, this performance hits completely different. We know that MJB went through a lot, but now can you imagine her singing this to people in the audience who were constantly causing her grief, pain, and drama. Excellent is all I can say. Once again hats off @Kitts.

Definitely one of the MOST powerful performances from her. And this was I believe her first time performing this song on a big stage which was the Grammy's. So she truly left it all out there for everyone to grasp & feel it in a way that she does. Another great live performance u guys should check out was her cover of a Janis Joplin song "Piece Of My Heart. When I tell u it is absolutely electrifying, words won't do it justice. U would have to see for yourself frfr. Check it out..

Mary was such a different artist when she came out. From traditional r&b to hip hop soul. Shes one of those artists that brings the essence of the black church in her music. The song feels real bec Mary has gone through a lot through her life. She has a lot of emotionally painful songs

It is personal, she did feel it... She was in , was coming out of an abusive relationship... And I think it wasn't her last one unfortunately. Mary was always one of my favorites as she's so soulful, wearing her heart on her sleeves as they say... I know that as a teenager she had one of my favorite songs, what I felt was Real love.. song

Unhappy Mary J preaches. The only one who comes close is Fantasia. Mary J survived Domestic Abuse, Drug Abuse, and Diddy… She meant that thing. She was sick of folks. The opening is the theme song for the soap opera Young and Restless and she mentions it in the song.
@jclark212182 ай бұрын
genius to use the Young & Restless theme for the song!!!; the early 2000s was when MJB entered her superstar era. The turning point for her career is when she did divas live with Whitney Houston upon Whitney's request. She has even said it herself that doing that performance opened alot of doors for her professionally. by 2000, MJB had already an established well-revered catalogue of music and performances that set her apart from many in her class coming up. But once she got to self-titled in 1999 (the Mary album, my favorite MJB album) into the early 2000s, it was no looking back. I remember watching this in my military dorm day room and was blown away and this night was off the hook, this was the same night that patti labelle joined Xtina P!nk Mya and Lil' Kim on stage to perform Lady Marmalade - y'all should respond to that. Truly a great evening!

Mary's best live vocal performance was The Ray Charles Tribute "Rain or Shine" Sirius XM "I can see in Color" Oprah "What child is this" feat Andrea Boncheilli The Grammys "Be without you".....Everyone references this Granny performance for the raw emotion, but Mary's voice grew several octaves years after this performance and No More Drama on Ellen and also in her Paris Special is vocally more impressive than this performance....If you want peak big notes, Prime voice Mary ... listen to her performance on One with U2...Than you'll understand her raw power and raspy voice at its best.

If I remember correctly, she had been nominated for a bunch of awards that night but didn't win any. So the line she sings at the end, where she alludes to working hard and not getting what she deserves, that was many people's interpretation of her mood for that performance. I think that was the year Alicia Keys won all the awards in the categories she was in with Mary.

She has the same realness as Keisha Cole to me. It’s just in them. This is why Mary is the Queen of Hip Hop Soul!

Two things stick out to me also about this performance. That night night for some reason MTV was doing coverage of the Grammys, I remember the camera showing Diane Sawyer standing up in the middle and just clapping and looking in disbelief at how MJB was going off. Also, Puffy had won an award and MTV was interviewing him during the performance, he stopped talking about whatever they asked him and was like, “ dang is Mary getting a standing ovation!? Yes she is!” He was having a real proud papa moment because of it.
