That is real soul singing right there! Mary with the intensity, Whitney with the buttery power vocals. Perfect pairing!!!

1st! - this performance was from divas live 1999 i believe. this is a rendition / cover of Aretha Franklin tune that fun fact: whitney houston's mom is the soprano soaring note on the original recording. you guys should react to their live performance of Rainy Dayz. Also do a week of mary j blige music videos.

And MJB has publicly expressed gratitude multiple times to Whitney for inviting her to sing that night, as it exposed her to a broader audience. Then she returned the favor several years later when Whitney was having some struggles, which is the Rainy Dayz performance @jclark21218 mentioned. Much love between these two!

This is the VH1 Divas Live show for charity. Whitney was the headliner and also a megastar at the time and invited MJB to sing with her. MJB credits this as a major point in career which she says opened many doors for her and she had Whitney to thank for it. I think thats why it was emotional for her.

The VH1 Divas Live (u probably heard it in passing) was a VH1 annual show where they choose 4-7 female singers from all genres to do a whole show where they sing one of their songs but the rest are covers both by themselves or as duets and then one or 2 big group numbers with all the ladies. So that's why they covered Aretha Franklin here.

Mary was Whitney's favorite singer of the new generation at the time. Whitney headlined the divas live this year, it was the 2nd one. Rumor has it that it was suppose to be Donna summer or Patti Labelle that was suppose to also sing with her but it didn't happen! Because Cher and Tina was hating she had so many performances! Whitney shared her stage and Mary said it opened doors for her all over the world! Whitney also gave her her first top 5 pop hit off her waiting to exhale soundtrack. Whitney alway shared her massive stage and light with many other less know singers during her reign!

In the clip, taken from the 1999 show - "Divas Live" - at the Beacon Theater in New York, Whitney does more than justice to "Ain't No Way" (a Top 20 hit for A. Franklin in 1968) with the help from her friend Mary J. Blige. Whitney didn't always sing in a style reminiscent of her godmother, Aretha Franklin, but she was perfectly capable of it when the spirit struck her. Blige said that singing with Nippy on this show "opened doors for her all over the world." Blige (8 years younger than Whitney) declared that she had finally stopped her addiction to cocaine and drinking, a feat achieved thanks to a sort of miracle, which occurred after the death of her friend Whitney. “I went to his funeral - she told the British newspaper Guardian - Finding myself near the coffin of someone you love so intensely shocked me. It made me understand the importance of everyone's life...

This was not a Whitney tour. This was Vh1 Diva’s Live performance . Mary came out around 92’. In the R&B/ Hip hop community she was already big. For the record I think that Mary was emotional because she was sharing the stage with Whitney. Whitney was ALWAY gracious in sharing the stage. She knew what she brought to the table so she was happy to share!
@deed21572 ай бұрын
By the time this was made Mary was an already established singer. If you were a hiphop and/or R&b fan you knew who Mary was. She came out in 1988 but released her first album in 1992. As a matter of fact one of her most popular songs Not Gon' Cry was on her third album and on the soundtrack of the film Waiting to Exhale Whitney was a costar in 1995. The soundtrack was one of the best selling soundtracks on the 90s

I think they just wore this because of the diva title of the show and Whitney looked good in anything. Whitney sang this song a lot through her career. The earlier versions of which I personally think put even Aretha's version to shame. It was so good in her prime.

The performance is so intense because both Whitney and Mary were in abusive relationships with men that beat them and degraded them. The songs lyrics tell a story about a woman that loves a man, but no matter how much she loves him and how hard she tries, he won’t change and treat her right.
@blackblake36582 ай бұрын
Or.....because Whitney's mom sang the key background vocals on the original Aretha record.

WHOA!! Totally left field & highly unexpected. This is definitely up there as one of Mary's most powerful performances & then u have the incredible Whitney The Voice Houston. If u do this performance reaction then u MUST do Mary's cover performance of Janis Joplin's "Piece Of My Heart" which is definitely rock if u heard the original song. Also her & U2 has a duet together titled "One" which is rock. I actually have that song listed for a MJB week 2 reaction-alongside "All That I Can Say", "Deep Inside", "Take Me As I Am", "One" ft. U2 & "Whole Damn Year". Great records/videos. So hopefully u get around to doing those & checking out her Janis Joplin cover of "Piece Of My Heart" live performance. Blessings & much love 🙏🏾 🫶🏾🤍 ..
