July 8, 1987, I was a cop walking a foot post outside Madison Square Garden for a Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers concert. I remember being nervous and bored at the same time. I walked for miles, trying to talk to people to pass time. It was some time after the show, I was walking past a huge bus. Door was open as I was walking past. In the doorway was Tom. Made eye contact, but didn’t want to bother him, I kept walking. He stopped me and waved for me to come back and greeted me. Asked if I wanted to “take a load off”. Being a rookie, I didn’t want to get into trouble, but went in anyway😂. And no, the bus did not smell of pot😂. No other band members were on the bus. Three others were, I think the driver and maybe a couple of technicians. Sat down for a while and talked about lots of things, including his music. Absolutely a down to earth guy. He asked if I wanted to go inside MSG and have a look backstage, but I said I was appreciative but I needed to go back outside. He left me with two CD’s and one cassette tape😎. He signed them all for me. I still have them.

My Dad said he'd work til the day he died ... And he did. Him and my mom were a country band in Pittsburgh - though he swore of POP Country in the 70s he continued to play folk, gospel and bluegrass teaching anyone that wanted to learn in a coffee shop and a music store. Tom had the Same Morals ... Share His music with Everyone ... til the day he died. Tears as I Know They're Part of the Greatest Band of All in Heaven

Losing Tom Petty was like losing a large part of my younger life. When I still had so much energy you couldn't keep me down. Just like Tom Petty. Every time I hear his music I feel my young spirit and don't want it to leave. Just knowing "never again" makes my own mortality real. Shy but what a suttle sense of humor he had. He was in the best part of my life and though I still get teary eyed sometimes, I watch his videos and smile and I am back there again. I know it wasnt always easy for his life to make great memories for us. So Thanks Tom for all you sacrificed, sharing your songs, your words we'll never stop singing . Don't know what its like to be you Tom. But, getting to the point. What a damn nice ride it was to be a fan.

I remember driving to Orlando on Interstate 4 when I heard the terrible news on my Sirius XM station. I had to pull over to the shoulder as I was so stunned and upset! Tom was one of my all time favorites as we grew up not that far from one another. I saw Tom and his band at least a dozen times over the years.

@@boatguy64 Sadly we just lost the last original member of Molly Hatchett as guitarist Steve Holland dies 3 weeks ago. Steve was the youngest members of the originals as he carried on later with his group Gator Country. I grew up in the Pensacola Beach area and Molly Hatchett used to play at a great huge bar called the Barrell's in Pensacola. I know Danny Joe Brown's widow. I spent a few years on Jacksonville Beach and would hangout at the Free Bird Café on the beach and spoke with Judy Van Zant the owners quite a few times as she would drop in every now and then.

@@scottdixon469 I was fortunate enough to meet Artimus at a local bar in st Aug. About 25 years ago. Was playing w his own band. Spent several hours drinking beers and talking shit w him. He opened up to me about what happened that night in the woods. And in a farmers field. Great man. With a HUGE heart. Idk if he remembers me, a long harried boat builder. But i will NEVER forget talking to him. What a privilege

I watched #theGrammys2017 tonight. Worthless time spent. The music of today is missing the spark of yesterday's music. Tom Petty you are a music genius. You captivate your crowd. When I listen to your music, I am Free Fallin' and spirits are good. Thank you for making great music!

real RNR died after the 80's. not one of these so called music acts that claim to have RNR don't have jack shit because 1st of all you have to have talent for the trade which they clearly don't. RNR went straight to hell. not one of these new so called rockers has what it takes to make real music because 1st of all you have to have talent to write and produce your own music and today's losers don't have a lick of talent.

I saw Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers six times. The first time was in San Francisco in 1978, and the last time was on his final tour in 2017 in Austin. On the later tours, I had one or more of my kids with me, and they seemed to understand why I went to see him so many times. He was the best performer I have ever seen and I have seen many great musicians and bands. He was always relaxed, natural, humble, and just so damned good at songwriting and performing. The day he died hit me hard, and my old college buddies and I texted about it for days. The Rolling Stones have always been my favorite band, but he is a close second, and his shows were better than anyone else's, bar none. He just gave himself to the crowd when he played. RIP Tom.

The beautiful thing about Tom Petty is that he really makes you feel like you're special and part his own entourage. I wish I could have been there at this concert, or any one for that matter. So much talent and so much fun. I miss you, Tom Petty.
