She is totally forgotten today and what a shame. Amazing music, I love it and have the records in my collection.

So great to spot Clark Yocum there in the male vocal quartet in the 1st and 3rd number (2nd from left). Clark was a member of the famous Pied Pipers vocal quartet from 1940 into the 1960s 🤩😎 Thanks for posting this!

There was no Fender Custom Shop in 1956. It was founded in 1987.

I've seen the Fender ad with her in it countless times, but this is the first time I've ever heard her. She's great! The ol' Stratocaster had quite a life before Hendrix. The guy who played guitar for Lawrence Welk also played one. His name was Buddy Merrill. He had some really awesome country chops, and he did lots of other stuff besides Lawrence Welk.

The Strat has the old bridge cover I see. I bought a new Strat in the 1970s and it also came with the standard push-on chrome bridge cover. Fender are re-releasing a Mary Kaye Strat for 2020, I'm tempted to order one.

Mary's Strat is not a custom shop...It is a very early Fender Strat that Leo and/or his men built way back in the early 50's...Remarkable music and musicians without any auto-tune...

That's right. The story was she told Don Randall, who was one of the sales guys at Fender who asked her to do the photo with the white Strat, she wouldn't mind doing the photo, but she didn't want to give up playing her D'Angelico. She claimed she didn't know about her name being connected to those classic Strats until decades later. Eventually, Fender gave her a Strat similar to the one she's playing here, and I guess that's what she used for the last years of her performing career.

Mary Kaye is John Kaye's (Steppenwolf) mother! I heard that from him at NAMM two years ago.
@Noisehead1019 жыл бұрын
Peter Wilson Wrong John Kaye. The guy from Steppenwolf is called John Kay without the E. The Steppenwolf guy was born in Germany to German parents and his real name is Joachim Krauledat. Mary Kaye's son John Kaye is a different guy and is responsible for the rare classic Psychedelic record "Suddenly One Summer" under the name J.K & Co.
@nealixd.30119 жыл бұрын
+Lazarus Solomon Right on. Steppenwolf JK's parents were a German mother and Ukranian soldier in the German Army. His Dad barely survived and came back from the eastern front fighting against the Russians at the end of WWII, under conditions of fleeing and retreat form the advancing Russian Army if I recall correctly. His Dad might have been one fine, strapping lad, looking at how big John Kay is! And considering he survived the brutal Eastern Front. Last I looked into it, he was still going strong in his music and looked really healthy like he had been taking care of himself, unlike a lot of rockers, etc.
@bakerrorick7 жыл бұрын
The John Kaye that Peter met at NAMM is Mary Kaye's NEPHEW, son of Mary's brother Norman, bassist in the MK Trio. But, that John Kaye also "played" John Kay in one of the two "Steppenwolf"s that were on the road in the late '70s. Thus the confusion.

They also used to put tape over the logo on the headstock sometimes, to hide the name. Guitar culture was still in its infancy in those days.

shame they didnt even put a cord in the guitar to make it look like she was really playing. I know she was an amazing player
@jpalberthoward92 жыл бұрын
I noticed that too. They were still putting the strap up at the tuners in those days, and over time that can result in a bent neck that goes sideways. Sometimes very difficult to straighten. Nowadays, you could trade that guitar even for a house.
