The depressing thought is that they were a "finishing act" because of racism. If you look at this one and, say, Chattanooga Choochoo, you'll notice there's a clean break in the music right before the brothers come on and it sounds almost like the music could've ended there. That was to allow southern state censors to cut out their scenes so audiences wouldn't have to see Black performers. For the same reason, the brothers were usually hired as guest stars, so their names wouldn't have to appear on the bill in southern states, and all of Glenn Miller's band on film were white.

February 12, 2014: From the 1963 graduating class of Paschal High School, Fort Worth, Texas--Happy 100th birthday to a great Paschal alumnus, the late Gordon Lee ("Tex") Beneke! You and Mr. Miller and all your associates did so much to boost the morale and determination of so many Americans during one of our country's darkest times. It was our parents' generation, and in memory of our parents and all other members of their generation--The Greatest Generation--who served the cause of liberty in so many ways, military and civilian alike, during and after that time, so that we might have the opportunity to enjoy the lives we have lived, we proudly salute you! Your wonderful music sounds as good today as ever!

Here in Dallas Texas 2020 I loved what you said you hit the nail on the head! I'm loving that I found this clip from the movie. My father and his brothers served their part in WWII. I grew up listening to big band music and I wished I could've seen Glenn Miller's band but I did get to take my dad to see Count Basie and his band. My dad said he saw him at Radio City Music Hall in 1945 he acted like a kid he was so excited I was able to do a meet and greet with pictures and autographs. I'm so glad this is the extended clip that included the amazing dancing of the Nichols Brothers.

Our darling Dad died last week age 95. He was a young man in the 1940's and Glenn Miller accompanied our childhoods in the 60's and 70's - we grew to appreciate it and now that he's gone - it brings back precious memories of him.

Thanks so much for the clip. It's criminal that the Nicholas Brothers aren't better known. They should've been among *the* biggest stars -- they were as elegant as Fred Astaire (whose work I love) and also were able to do athletic feats that he couldn't.

Thanks for the info. Was wondering whomthe two tap dancers were. Yes, I was thinking of Fred Astaire when watching and thought, I don't think Mr. Astaire has the gymnastic abilities like the Nicholas Brothers do. Simply fantastic number

According to Wikipedia, it was (unfortunately) a common practice for Hollywood studios in the 1940s to edit out parts of clips of songs when prints were sent to Southern states. Thus, when performers like the Nicholas Brothers were featured rather than just as comic relief or stereotypical characters, Southern audiences never saw their dance routines.

The music back in the 1930s and 40s were the best music in that time. Most bands today call themselves big bands because of the popularity they have, but nothing will compete with the Big Band aera. The music and songs were top-notch and still are top notch in my mind. I am 33 now and still think this is better than today's music

OUTSTANDING!! I have no words. The joy and artistry of the Nicholas Bros... This is Olympic level gymnastics while wearing a tux and dress shoes with leather soles and TAPS 🤘🏾👊🏽 I try to comprehend the work put in and discipline, as Black men in the 1940s, to achieve this level of prowess and accomplishment. I need to know more about them. If there isn't a statue or monument for them somewhere, there should be. Respect.
