They always were, are and will be my O T P. And I feel but for you, but if you don't know them... you are missing a entire life of feels, painful love and your shipper heart always been incomplete.

Same. I love Thomas too but I just can’t. It’s impossible. I can’t handle Matthew’s death. I found out that he was going to die at the beginning of season 3, and I couldn’t watch the car scene either. This just couldn’t happen. No 😭😭😭😭

+xBrokenArrow Actually, the writer (Julian Fellows) did not want to kill Matthew off, but they had little choice. Each of the actors' contracts was for a 3-year term and when it came time to renew them, Dan Stevens did not want to renew his. Like many actors, I think Dan Stevens got a little too 'big for his britches' and either was demanding an obscene amount of money, or thought he could move on to the big screen and become the next George Clooney. He refused to sign another contract so Julian had to kill his character off. Funny but I haven't seen him in anything since he left Downton Abbey.

Mary Yes, i know that Dan wanted out and the writers had no choice but to kill him off. But that doesn't make Matthew's death any less sad or heartbreaking. He was one of my favourites in the show. And i agree with you, i feel like it was kinda stupid of him to leave the show. But i'm sure he had his reasons, and he actually said in an interview that he didn't regret his decision to leave Downton Abbey.

+Mary Actually he's been quite busy since and is currently filming the live action Disney Beauty and The Beast playing Beast opposite Emma Watson's Belle. From what I understand, he felt there wasn't really anywhere else for his character to go. He would either be a happily married man with the perfect lot in life which can be extremely boring in tv land. Or Fellowes would create drama between Mary and Matthew, which seems very wrong in it's own right. I'm completely cut up that he was killed off but I understand Dan Stevens' reasoning.

It still irritates me that he didn't want to renew the contract for the show...series 3 was too much and then series 4 was insipid, and then 5 was better but not much but then this last season was miserable.

I am so pissed Dan decided to leave Downton. I understand he wanted to do other things in his career, but Matthew and Mary were the best together. I invested so much emotions into their relationship before they finally got together together... and then he just... died.

Matthew was the good thing about Mary .. he was able to show her best side .. that we never saw without him .. after his death .. she returned to her cruel .. arrogant self .. and she continued .. for awhile .. Mary was never deserving of Matthew .. he saw something in her though .. no one could see and apparently, only him was able to get out of her .. the warmth and gentleness she had with him .. was new to her too .. I wish he never had died .. he didn't deserve it .. Isobel raised a fine gentleman .. and she is a great person herself .. I never liked Mary before Matthew .. and I can recognize her growing up later .. but it took her a lot .. to grow up it took her a lot .. because she was miserable and she kept making everyone else miserable too .. not to mention .. her stupid way of getting Matthew back .. she kissed him .. as if there is no shame I always thought Mary had no shame about her behaviour or choices .. she never got to handle the consequences of them too She did a lot .. hurt a lot .. and she went away with it ..

Forse è preoccupante, ma sono sotto shock, sono ancora immersa in questa storia meravigliosa, romantica e senza tempo... credo che la magia fra questo due personaggi sia irripetibile, è stato davvero crudele un simile finale, capisco che Dan Stevens abbia voluto lasciare la serie, ma forse potevano trovare un altro espediente... Oppure si dovrebbero stipulare agli attori contratti più vincolanti!!!

this will always be a very big painful tragedy moment in the whole downton abbey history. such an unhappy ending in my opinion, it's so not fair that he had to die when it all just turned out to be perfect and his love just gave birth. the most important humans in this tv show dies, and it's extremely annoying and painful every time to watch and people that doesn't watch downton abbey will never understand how important matthew and mary's relationship was and their whole history. He didn't ended his contract, it was the contract that ended and he simply didn't renew it.

Perhaps he thought he'd become typecast or perhaps he'd found out that subsequent seasons would promote cultural marxism. If there's no historical Lady Rose, it simply didn't happen because in 1920 the entire society prevented it. Even 50 years later it was still one helluva big deal in Britain.
