What a sweetheart. I knew Mary at Saddlebrook, Harry Hopman International Tennis. In 1987-88, and I coached her brother, and spent a lot of time with her family, and she was always a great kid. Jim made mistakes, but he was my friend. Mary sure turned out to be a fantastic person.

She always looked like her mother, but even more as she got older, almost a carbon copy! If you watch videos of Mary's matches from the early 90s, watch for whenever her mother was filmed. What is even interesting is that ever since she moved to France to play for France, her french natural chicness came out in her with each year. Looking at her now in this clip, she is totally French chic elegant, and naturally.

This woman’s forehand paved the way for so many after her. I wish we had her on court for longer and that her earlier professional years were not so troubled, but hey...She found peace and forgave her dad. Those are magnificent trophies to have too.

The best backhand of all time? They meant to say forehand. Not that her backhand was bad, but the forehand was the best ever material.
@FlabbyTitmuss10 ай бұрын
Certainly technically it was one of the best. Absolutely stunning shot. Graf’s forehand was more effective m, but that was mainly due to her insane athleticism.
@LuLu-nw6bi10 ай бұрын
@@FlabbyTitmuss Exactly, Graf's superior footwork and speed were getting her into position to hit great forehands but if we talk about the shots themselves Pierce was her equal. I remember their Roland Garros SF encounter in 1994, where Mary played probably her best tennis ever - Graf's forehand seemed almost pale compared to hers. Other impressive forehands: Ivanovic, Mirza, and Stosur with that heavy topspin.
@FlabbyTitmuss10 ай бұрын
@@LuLu-nw6biAgree with all of that. I also enjoyed Capriati’s forehand…by far her smoothest shot technically (the serve and backhand were a bit of a mess).
@LuLu-nw6bi10 ай бұрын
@@FlabbyTitmuss Another great forehand, yes. And let's not forget Davenport, probably the best ball-striker overall. Both her forehand and backhand were so clean, powerful and well placed.

Pierce was a joy to watch. So glad she got inducted into the Hall of Fame. When Pierce was hot she beat everyone on tour. She played with the Graf, Seles, Novotna, Sabatini, Sanchez gang as well as Davenport, Hingis, the William Sisters and Henin and Clijsters. If not for injury and the early abuse she took from her father she could have banked two or three more slams. No one had that presence she exuded on court. I enjoyed watching her wack the crap out of the ball.

She did try, but stated she never fully recovered from that injury and that it was just too painful to train like she needed to
@Jeremy-f3s5 ай бұрын
She was sidelined all of 2007 but kept saying she wasn't retiring and was named in the French squad to play during the 2008 Beijing Olympics but again had to pull out cos of injury and that was the end of her playing career. So yeah that injury was the end of her. But like many former players she went on to teach tennis to others herself and according to Wikipedia as of 2013 lives in Mauritius though that might be different now although she says in this video she loves the place so maybe she's still there.

She speaks good french though. Her mother is French. But besides her excellent tennis, we must give her credit for her guts and determination in how she quickly moved to France as a teenager due to her father's anger at the U.S. tennis, and had to quickly pick up the language (she didn't speak much french or use it at all in america), but also live in a completely different and new environment. There were lots of critics from both France and USA, and people who didn't have much faith in her. It was all guts and her born talent that put her forward.
