Mary Pierce was still a new player here. Martina Navratilova was average the four years after her last grand slam title in 1990. Can't believe they played each other!

Mary had really done her homework for this match. Really targeting Martina's forehand, which was known to break down under pressure, and attacking Martina's serve, which she always found unsettling. Martina said after the match that Mary could "hit the hell out of the ball".

MARY PIERCE HAD THE GAME AND STRENGH TO HAVE BEEN A MAJOR TOP 5 PLAYER. SHE WAS THAT GOOD. I MIS THESE GREAT LADIES OF TENNIS. I DON'T WATCH MUCH TENNIS ANYMORE EVER SINCE GOAT MR. FEDERER, MONICA SELES, STEFIE GRAF, LINDSEY DAVENPORT, SABATINI ETC.

Novak is much better than Federer ever was and Nadal is even a tad better…but I agree on the other players

This match is a great example of why Martina as great as she was in her era would have alot of problems today. Mary Pierce could step up and rip the ball big time which forced Navratilova to have to engage in too many baseline rallies. As great of an athlete as Martina was her backhand would get taken apart by players like Pierce and big hitters she would have to deal with now. Martina had the perfect game for her time and she was great but her ground game would have had to improve in an exponential way to even stay on the court with the big hitters of today. This video puts it all out there. Great performance by Pierce, I was happy for her at that time.

Whether Martina is 22 or 32 here she's going to have big problems. No woman in her era hit the ball as hard as Mary Pierce, Serena Williams, Lindsey Davenport or others that were to follow. Martina's backhand wasn't going to stand up to the incredible pressure it was going to face once rushing the net became a more difficult task. As far as Martina's age, she made the Wimbledon final in 1994. She also won the US OPEN mixed at 49 or 50 l believe. Martina could still play at this time but the hard hitters were coming. She's fortunate that she missed these women with huge groundstrokes or the record books would look alot different.

But Navratilova learned the game in an era when that kind of blasting was impossible - if she came along now she'd be coming over her backhand way more and she's holding her own here even with the tools she had.

@donallynch1689 Don't know even as things stood Tracy Austin who didn't hit as hard as the other women l mentioned would have been getting more victories against Martina if she wouldn't have been forced into early retirement. Martina isn't as big and imposing as she appears to be. Big hitters would have been a problem no matter what. Seles, the Williams sisters, Lindsey Davenport, Mary Pierce, and others would be quite formidable. Martina's timing of when she arrived on the tennis scene was perfect.

@@gregoryphillips3969 But Martina had great h2hs against big hitters of every era. After Austin was gone she had an equal h2h with graf and a close losing record against seles. Of course the williams sisters who are decades younger would have been a problem but she beat everyone across the net a lot of the time.

Super from Mary but man was Navratilova's late-career serve slow and spinny. Still one of the most elegant deliveries in tennis history though.

Good a real woman won this match

Martina's 2nd serve wasn't as good as it was in her heydays, and Mary was very powerful. But always nice to look at such champions 😊
