There are no rules as to how long an audit goes on once commenced, but it's a negotiation with an ultimate end - because you either manage to convince the IRS that you're right (in getting the deduction) or you have to pay up. It's not like ... oh, let's wait and see how it all works out at the end. Numbers are numbers and they don't change over time, not when it comes to the annual taxes you owe.
