In a busy week for diplomacy, world leaders are weighing up what a second Trump term could mean for the U.S. and the world. To the former president's niece, Mary Trump, it would spell nothing but bad news for American democracy. Mary Trump joined Michel Martin to discuss her views on the upcoming election and her latest book, "Who Could Ever Love You."

I grew up in a narcissistic family. I got out early while my brother & sister were sucked into the tragedy of being unloved but entangled with the narcissist parent. WOW! Was I lucky!!!🦋

No question in my mind she has been in the dungeon to have such a depth of understanding.

Thank you, Mary, for your courage. Moral character, honor & conduct matter in our elected leaders. Proud Texan, conservative Christian and patriot putting Country over a Republican party that has lost its moral compass - voting ALL BLUE. ✝️🇺🇸🧢🧢🧢 Country over party. 🇺🇸🧢 We will not bear good fruit in our country with candidates who lack moral character.

There's a lot about Trump's family that reminds me of my own. My father was cruel and chose his second son as the one who would follow him, instead of the first son who was his namesake. First, he damaged my mother with his cruelty and bullying, and then he trained his second son to emulate him, which he did. I walked away from this toxic atmospheric many years ago, and with therapy, I have done a great deal of healing. I'm so grateful for that decision and I view Mary Trump as one of my heroines in life.

This wonderful woman has taught us more about who ( or what ) Donald Trump really is than the entire news media. All of my respect.

I can totally relate. My dad was an unwanted foster child and my mom a female version of a misogynist(big chip on her shoulder vs. men), and it's quite apparent in the intra- familiar interaction(I'm the eldest and only son with 2 sisters). Joy is expressed through denigration of the other. I suspect WW2 has a strong influence(we're Austrian) but it's pretty effed up, nonetheless.

If I had the opportunity to converse with Ms. Trump, I would hope to alleviate some of her concerns. It was never her fault, nor her family's fault, nor even only D. Trumps faults, although he bears some blame. Before Donald even entered the political arena, the political parties had already chosen to put themselves before the country. Speaker of the House, Mr. John Boehner, resigned from his post because of the vitriol of his own party that he had to cope with. The prior Speaker of the House Mr. Newt Gingrich had cultivated and established an atmosphere of "us" against "them" as it related to Republicans and Democrats, instead of recognizing that all Representatives are elected by their constituents and therefore ought to work together for the benefit of the country. If there is blame to pile on anyone, it truly should fall on Mr. Gingrich's shoulders. He cultivated the racism, the misogyny, the hatred against so many different groups of people. Addison Mitchell McConnell III, also did not do anything to change that projectory. The bed for politics tearing apart our morality, our social structure, was already made. All Donald did was to slip into it and take advantage for himself of the opportunities that were presented to him. It is the voter who made that choice, as they had the right to do so. In a few weeks voters have now another opportunity to learn from our mistakes and make better choices this time around.
