My friend"s son had very delayed speech. Any response he gave was praised ( which sent him mixed messages), and he wasn't making headway. He would grunt for something he wanted and all of the adults in his life would touch each object in the room asking him "Do you want this? This ? This ? This, or this, then ?..." We knew he could not navigate throughout life with an entourage of people asking him just what he wanted. It was all so maddening until his teenaged aunt moved in. Thank goodness, the therapists taught her how to handle it. He got frustrated at times, but she always comforted him and stuck to her training. She pulled him out of it. Today, you'd never know he had once struggled with speech !. What you are doing is very helpful. God bless you.

Hi Mary! Can scrolling be a non-responsive behavior? For example, I know an individual who will “scroll” through communication attempts. If this individual is getting agitated, the individual will start asking a variety of questions. The communication isn’t successful because the individual will “scroll” through the questions without even waiting for a response. The function seems to be attention with hints of secondary functions being access to tangibles and escape. I was wondering if this could be an example of scrolling. Thank you in advance!

Yes it could be a type of scrolling. Seems like he needs to be taught more specific language to communicate he is feeling done or upset etc.

thanks for your answer and willingness to advise. i am a mother of two autistic kids: a girl aged 5 and a half and a boy aged 4 and a half. diagnosed last year. I have two other kids who are NT and very advanced and their speech is great. But my two autistic kids have significant kanguage difficulties...especially my son. I am an Academic Dr. I left my career last year and I am.being trained to be their ABA tutor since 6 months. i have loads of questions...but the most urgent one is about my son who still didnt pronounce any word...or not even a word approximation or a bubble. just verbal stimming... Kiaaa....liaaaa ...kalaaaa...yakwaaa...koumiii....ilaaa i am very worried if he has Apraxia beside autism... here in the UK...ABA is not very known and does not have a good reputation and it took me 3years to have the diagnosis in place... ABA helped my son with his self help care skills...toileting (he is off nappies) and goes to the toilet independently....and reduced negative behaviour... but there is no improvment in his speech.. Is there a way I could call you on a phone number to have a quick chat, to save your time please. i need your help please.
