The mother cut the grandmother out if her life when Peter was born. The grandmother became part of their lives again before the birth of Charlie, who's name hints they thought was going to be a second son. The grandmother is part of a cult that wishes to find a human vessel for the demon Paimon, and does a ritual to bind Paimon to Charlie before her birth. Paimon is dissatisfied with the cult because he demands a male body. So the grandmother and the cult set a plan to do another ritual to bind Paimon to Peter, but this ritual requires 3 heads from 3 generations and releasing Paimon from his current vessel, Charlie. The cult digs up the grandmother's body to acquire the first head, then marks Paimons symbol on the telephone poll that will decapitate Charlie, acquiring the second head and releasing Paimon. Then they trick the mother in her grief to do a ritual that will allow Paimon to possess the family members. Paimon possesses the mother and has her remove her own head, thereby completing the 3 generational sacrifices and binding Paimon to a male vessel, Peter.

A cool hidden gem in this movie is at the end when there is all those people in the treehouse praising Paimon, you can see one of Peter's friends that was with him under the bleachers smoking weed at school. It really just cements how their entire lives were puppeteered by everyone around them and nothing they could have done would have prevented this inevitable outcome

Hereditary really needs to be viewed in the dark, and absolutely no talking, for it to take its full effect. It is one of the most disturbing and emotionally brutal movies I have ever seen. The horror stems as much from the family dysfunction and horrifying grief than it does from the supernatural element.

Hereditary is one of those films that has stuck with me til this day, it left me with this uneasy feeling and just astonishment from what I had witnessed. The movie was beautifully shot, story well told, symbolism was just everywhere in this movie. One big thing that help drive it all home? the music and sound, that click, the orchestra, it all just made all the scenes pop even more. This will honestly forever be one of my favorite horror movies.

Technically the mom didn’t know it was a party. Peter told her it was a school thing if I recall correctly.. a bornfire? So she assumed her daughter would be safe with adult supervision... honestly a shitty but realistic thing to do in times of grief. They just need a reason to explain what happened but unfortunately it was an accident. Both the mom and son aren’t able to come to terms with that. I think the dad is the hero. He’s trying so hard to be a support for his fam that he himself didn’t have time to grief :(

This is a film you can watch more than once. At the start, you hear the sound of hooves (Paimon rides a camel) as the camera pans into Peter's bedroom. Also, in class the teacher is discussing the idea of fate and Greek tragedy (but Peter isn't paying attention). In the Grief Meeting, Joanie looks at Annie when it's time to talk, putting pressure on her to start. Also, when Joanie is talking to Annie in the carpark, a wooden board is in her boot. Finally, you see the cult members multiple times outside the house, in the attic as Peter wanders around and you hear footsteps before the family arrive in the house after coming back from the Gran's funeral.

Milly Shapiro, the actress that plays the role of Charlie has a rare genetic disorder called, Cleidocranial Dysplasia (CCD). Her sister has it as well. It effects the bones and teeth, and many times people that have CCD are missing bones, such as collar bones. The disorder also can make people look younger than they actually are. Milly was 16 in 2018, when the film came out. So she was quite a bit older than the part she played in the film.

The cult dug the body up, the “grief group” is the cult, many of these are seen naked and dressed in other scenes like the sons friend with the man-bun under the bleachers is in the tree house final scene. The cult and Paemon manipulated the whole thing. The last podcast on the left and also dead meat podcast/KZbin channels doa. Great breakdown that explains a lot but the best review is on KZbin about the Easter eggs that goes deep dee into everything and will scare the hell out of most. Like me.

She was born with Cleidocranial dysostosis (CCD), also called cleidocranial dysplasia, is a birth defect that mostly affects the bones and teeth. Also the body, shoulders, facial development.... That all aside she's an amazingly intelligent actress. Just see an interview with her an Alex Wolf (Peter) she's so well mannered and fun to talk to.

This is probably my favorite horror film of the last 20 years. The passing of it is slow and that's what I love about it. It takes it's time so you actually get to know the characters. I read something about how you could interpret the light that floats around a lot of the movie being the light of Annie's magnifying glass. That this is one of her twisted dollhouses shes used to try and process the death of her mother and daughter. After all, fire is a recurring image and the only character we know who tried to do that was Annie. The fire around grandma in the woods, Steve is burned to death, and Annie has nightmares about burning herself and her children alive. You could read the whole thing as a metaphor for passing on mental illness, and Annie ultimately blaming her mother for whats happened to all of them. Once again, no one can admit anything they've done. I know the director said one thing, and the supernatural element adds a lot to the story too (it would mean the grandma did not have DID but was holding demons inside of her, which she passed on to Charlie by feeding her) but whats the fun in movies and art if theres no room to draw your own conclusions? Two things can be true at once.

Great reaction. I'd heard of King Paimon somewhere before this. So ended up geeking out a little finding out about him. The lore this film uses is pretty much spot on. The book you see is even one of the few books containing lore of Paimon (12th century). All the symbols used are correct. Even the artwork you see of Paimon is a cope of the original art. Even things like the floating is correct. Paimon is the King of mischief, & if you read the text it says he can bend, or even break, the laws of physics. Floating, easy. Annie passing through the floor to get into the attic, easy. & the conjuring of riches. You could place a block of wood in front of him & he could turn it into anything, let's say gold. Although they just changed the title of the book. But they did change a couple of details for extra horror effect. King Paimon is actually 1 of 9 kings of Hell. So the thing about needing to face in a certain way is incorrect. The other change is the beheadings. His lore contains nothing about that. The reason it was included was the art work you see in the book. He has 3 heads hanging from his belt. So they changed that. But it adds a Lot of extra scare. Otherwise, no lore was changed. Hope that helps you sleep a little more soundly. Hope everyone is having a great week & much love to everyone from here in the UK

This movie breaks like a 5th wall of disbelief for me, like another layer of inception, specifically in the mom's grieving scene. It's a feeling that i am so immersed in her pain, and it feels so incredibly real, i am automatically reminded this is just a film, and that Toni Colette is a goddamned badass.

If you’re writing the movie off as “mental illness “ you’re going to be lost because then nothing will make sense lol “ we see the whole story from her point of view “ that’s not even true lol at that point you’d seen it from the daughter and the sons perspectives lol you’d seen them both at school and at the party and in their rooms lol The take away is that THERE WAS NO MENTAL ILLNESS . all the things they were diagnosed with was just from the grandmother trying to posses them all and using demonic forces against them . They weren’t mentally ill at all. It’s almost scary to think just because we hear someone has mental illness we will write off everything that happens to them as made up even when everything supports them as telling the truth lol

I wonder how many little things you noticed while editing. The cult's symbol on everything, the fact that the wide shots of the film is like looking into a dollhouse, all of the 3s involved...etc. This was a great return to an old-school kind of horror for me, when I saw it. The genre's been inundated by what feels to me like cheap, try-hard BS over the last several years. This was definitely one of the brighter spots. A horror movie that plays with vibrant colors, builds wonderful suspense, keeps its secrets close to the chest, and ramps up with the surreal weirdness all the way until the end. No gimmicks, clowns or creepy dolls...just good character building and a constant sense of dread throughout. Good shit.
