My college roommate back in the early 60's bay area was a guitarist. He did studio work for a lot of bay area bands of the day, eagles, grateful dead, blue cheer, neil young were a few. He found a 1935 martin for sale at a guitar store in Palo Alto. We didn't have much money in those days and I remember selling almost everything we had to get the 3800 dollars it cost. ( a fortune in those days ). It was worth it just to see the look on his face when we got it home. He made good money with it, so he managed to pay most of it back in a couple of years. I told him to forget what I'd given him. It was good enough to hear him practice on the front porch with it :>) I'm pretty sure he still has it and still plays it. With love and respect from the west: DeMontana

That’s incredible I lived in Palo Alto ,and there was only one guitar store - this was before Gryphon - a friend of mine happened to own the store. It was in Menlo Park actually. I think it was called Guitars Unlimited ? I’m having a brain fart. Bill Courtial was the owner. Bill was a jazz player. All the guys that worked there were jazz players. I also got some sessions out of that. Steven Whiting wrote jungles. Vince Gauraldi ,and Don Grusin were playing in the area. The point being ,and I’m talking 1970. Guitars were dirt cheap as opposed to today. I sold my 1962-3 Martin D 28 for I believe $250-$300, bought a D 45 ( not a better dreadnut than than the 28, just more bling )

I love the smell of my Martin. It's the rosewood smell. I bought a Brazilian rosewood board about 45 years ago. I finally got around to using some of in a project about 2 years ago. When I ran it through my bandsaw the scent was almost intoxicating. It is named for the scent.

I've had my OM28 for about 30 years now. Every year it improves. It's sounding absolutely beautiful and I've never had anything done to it. You have many years of playing a beautiful guitar ahead of you. Enjoy. I bought mine in the eighties from Chris Martin as he was doing a UK promotion tour which included Norwich. What a great evening that was. I remember him saying "when you buy a new Martin that's the worst it's going to sound." He was right. It just keeps improving.

Congratulations on your OM 28 e...the more you play it the more it grows in sound and responsiveness! I Bought my Martin D-28 in 2007...new! Had a professional luthier set it up to my “low” preferences and make and install new bone nut and bone saddle and install bone bridge pins. Beautiful balance, tone, resonance and sustain. When playing it you hear and actually feel the warm vibrations! Play it almost every day. The sound board has really opened up over the years and it is such a pleasure to play!

@Jon Oz I have an OM21 reimagined - really nice. But now I'll still get the ooo28 reimagined. I use OM21 for fingerpicking, strumming and jazz style playing. The shortscale of the 00028 will give you more bass - this really kicks in for bluesy fingerstyle and also fingerpicking. I compared them 1:1 and some songs sounded better on the one some on the other. But both are really top. When deciding between OM21 and OM28 I would go with the 21 as it is just less bling and cheaper.
@slw59
@slw59 3 жыл бұрын
@Jon Oz I had a long time to make a decision because a Martin was simply too expensive! I'd go to the shop I trusted (McCabe's in L.A.) and the #1 first decision was body size, what felt good in my arms. I thought if it doesn't feel comfortable, I'm not going to want to play it. I knew I didn't want a dreadnaught since I'd had one before and it always felt a little too big, especially the depth. I tried the 0,00,& 000 sizes and the 000 just felt right. The real issue came down to 000 or OM since the bodies are the same. The store didn't have both at the same time which was a bummer! The other big question was wood selection, mahogany or rosewood. I assumed I wanted mahogany because of its rounded, warm tone. Once I played rosewood though, there was no going back. I fell in love with the sound instantly. Finally, the store got a 000-28 and an OM-28 at the same time! I found a quiet room in the back of the store late one evening and played both, side by side, for an hour. The 000-28 just spoke to me more. So, I realized that once you get the size right and the type of wood right, it's then just a matter of which one speaks to you more. Volume wise (I play mostly chords) the 000-28 is plenty loud enough.

Martin guitar fan here. Bought a brand new D-18 in 1972. Yeah, I’m older than dirt. 68 and counting. I’ve bought and sold at least 20 Martins over the years. I’ve owned an OM-28v. Yours is a beauty! I like to call the OM-28 “the Swiss army knife “ of acoustic guitars. It can handle any genre of music. Don’t forget to humidify and keep it in its case in dry climate. It needs to be fed to keep it from cracking. It will last you a lifetime and beyond. If you think it sounds nice now, wait until it fully opens up in about 5-7 yrs. It was comical when you sniffed the sound hole. We all do it. There’s a KZbinr named Aaron Short who sells tee shirts that read “sound hole sniffer”. Just saying, if you want to join the club, check him out. Just another die hard Martin fan. Be well and stay safe. .

Mary, I have always loved Martin guitars as I grew up in Liverpool England at the time of the Beatles, but I was taken by folk music (the folk revival). I was a massive Bob Dylan and Donavan fan, both of whom played Martins. I emigrated to Canada at the age of seventeen in 1966 and found another local folk artist, Gordon Lightfoot who was also a talented singer song writer, playing a Martin. I attended the local folk clubs in Toronto at what was then called the Village, where all the big folk artists visited on a rotational basis. In 1986 I took up guitar as a hobby and bought a Martin D35 and I learned to play many of the songs written and by my folk heroes. As I am older now and have developed some osteoarthritis in my finger joints I needed a guitar that would make it easier for me to continue playing. I chose to buy the Martin Dreadnaught Junior, which has a shorter scale length and a 1.75 inch nut width. I play it with light gauge strings and for a smaller guitar has an amazing sound. If I could afford it and still had the dexterity in my fingers I would buy and play a few more Martin models of different shapes and tone wood varieties. They are all amazing.

I have a Martin D-28s I bought back in 1968. For some reason, I decided not to attend college that particular quarter and wound up with the cash for school burning a hole in my pocket. A friend told me about this fabulous guitar he'd found in a music store in Atlanta and wanted to show it to me. So we went to see it, and I fell in love with it. Solid spruce top and solid rosewood back and sides,, with slotted head and Grover tuners. It has the extra large body and sounds gorgeous with Silk and Steel strings when played finger style, which I do exclusively. I taught myself to play and hated picks and loved Paul Simon's early guitar work, so I developed my own style of playing with thumb and three fingers. This D-28s has the wide neck, so it's perfect for finger picking. I was never performance oriented, but my friends often asked me to play and sing for them, and I wound up playing and singing in a couple of coffee houses, mostly folk songs and a few I wrote. The most joy I had from it came from sitting on a ledge of the stairwell into the kitchen and playing for my mother as she worked in the kitchen (that room had great acoustics). She loved my guitar playing, so I gave her many hours of impromptu concerts. The greatest compliment I ever received was many years after I was busy rearing a family and had little time to play, I asked my father upon his retirement if there was anything I could do for him. He thought about it a few moments and asked if I would record some of my songs for him to listen to. Up to that time, I don't think he had ever said anything about my music, so I had not known whether he liked it or not. That Martin is just so beautiful to listen to (and look at and smell) and feel, it's hard not to pick it up and play it. I am delighted you have found your Martin OM-28e, a guitar that nicely complements your rich voice and inspires your writing. May the joy of your relationship grow ever fuller and more rewarding through many years of mutual devotion.

I am still in love with the Ovation 45 years later. Although there are many times I wish I had bought the Martin. Mary, the OM-28 is also my preferred Martin model. It really is the classic Martin that most other acoustic guitars are based on-you can't go wrong with it. However, I was curious about your comment about plane travel with your guitar and having some issues getting permission to fly with it. Do you have any tips about flying with a guitar? You could probably do a video about this subject.

Daniel Stoddart I always travel with a guitar. In the US, a musical instrument legally can go in the overhead of an airliner, even though it it oversized, as long as there is room. I used to pay for early boarding to make sure there was room, until a gate person wanted me to gate check my D-28 even though I was entitled to take it as carry on. I had printed a copy of the applicable US law and showed it to her. Things started to escalate. She called her bosses and found that I was right, and rather sheepishly let me on. After that I bought a Voyage Air folding OM guitar, which goes in a foam backpack. I have had it all over the place, with no problems or issues. They wave me on, I put it in the overhead, much less grief. Rosewood guitars are, or were, another issue. You can easily find yourself being accused of being a rosewood smuggler! I live just outside Nazareth PA and the Martin tour is excellent. The precision crafts men and women are outstanding and friendly. They incorporate modern robotics along side human expertise. Also, make sure to visit the Martin museum to see some classics as well as beautiful works of inlay and mother of pearl, especially the da vinci model

Best acoustic guitars ever made! I had a friend back in the seventies who had a Martin D-28. Her career had entered a slight downward spiral for a short bit, and when we were walking home one night from one of her concerts in Winnipeg, Canada we were in the middle of a bridge and she suddenly turned in a fit of depression and tossed it into the river below. It's been fifty years and the memory of that moment still brings a shudder down my spine.

@Guillermo. True!! When I bought this one, it sang to me and I finally had the sales guy play it thirty feet in front of me. Done !!! At that point, I payed the man. Twelve years later it still sings to the crowds. I did change the saddle. Now a pro takes a second pause to hear the voice. No one catches this install.

I got the same exact guitar almost one year ago, except mines has the fishman setup. Well, the first one had faulty electronics, so I had to send it back for another. One thing I love about the guitar is the smell of the rosewood! I do put heavier gauge strings on it, so the only thing I can't really do is bends but otherwise I'm glad to have my dream guitar and hope this does the same for you too.

I just started recently started playing guitar and the one I started with felt really hard to play and learn in. So I decided that I had to get a decent instrument to improve my experience and remove the guitar as a variable for my beginner difficulties. As such, I bought a Martin D-10e, and I couldn’t be happier. My experience improved 100 fold, and it’s a joy continuing my journey with that guitar. When I become much more proficient, I’ll upgrade to a higher end guitar, and the OM-28e is certainly one that I will look into. Let me also add that you have been an inspiration as I continue on this journey. You are an amazing player and I just hope to one day play half as well as you do.
