I used the MAS 49/56 (and MAS 49, and MAT 49 submachine gun) during my military service between 1992 and 1994. I think i was one of last that used this rifle and this PM in the french army. The rifles were so old that wen you fired 3 shot rapidly, the 7 other came in full auto !!!. One day, a general came and, when he look the honour platoon, say to our officer : "do you know that the algerian war as end over 30 years". I have never seen that we can use the clip of 5 rounds to load the magazine. We ever used only the detachable magazine. What is funny is that after, I go to the Gendarmerie and then I can use MAS 36 and MAS 36/51. I didn't go to an other branch of the french military because I don't want to get a LEBEL. I must say that I used also the FAMAS since the begining. At the end, I love all this old guns who are very simple to use and very strong. (sorry for the bad english language).

Narval I think I know the problem with the MAS firing shots in auto, It was wear in the piece retaining the internal hammer.(among other things) I was in Saint Maixent NCO school in 1964. It happened some time. Prrrtt, oohh s... But it was a good rifle, acurate, simple, I must say " Russian" in a way. Years, years later we were issued the Famas. Good rifle too; one thing I hated on this short rifle was the chamber too close to your ear and that caused me a lot of hearing loss and tinnitus.

Last I heard, the MAS-49 and 49/56 have a very similar if not the same gas system used on the SKS or SVT-40.

I'm a former French Army NCO, from "before the FAMaS" era. I've never experienced such issues you're reporting with my service rifle, carefully prepared by our armorers. I've lived and slept with that rifle on the field without complaining ... apart from some nasty bites on the hand if not held properly when closing the bolt. Good job though on putting together this video.
@voldamane
@voldamane 9 жыл бұрын
+tvnshack I have maybe 30 magazines for my 49 and 49/56 and maybe 1 in 4 cannot easily load stripper clips. This is exactly the sort of little issue that a unit armorer would solve by pulling magazines that are not functioning perfectly from unit stocks. Also, I have noted that some of my strippers get a little finicky as they are reused, even in the MAS 1936
@katenunyabizness9221

I've experienced similar issues with my stripper clips in my 36. Seems heavy use/age makes them get a bit out of norm. I've had some decide to just not let the ammo strip through despite being a breeze to load up and others hold the ammo tight but when trying to strip into the gun, the ammo is let go and and falls all over. Needless to say those clips are removed from use. Can't say I ever experienced that issue with my 49/56 though, mainly because I always used the magazines instead of trying to stripper clip load in it.

Clips were NEVER used on duty. They were issued for the bolt action MAS 36, same round, same factory. Accuracy compares to G3, FAL, M14 and alikes. The APX scope 3,5x fits on with a quick mount. Its very special is the grenade launcher and its grenades: AP, AT, or AP-AV. Deadly! I use it in service before the FAMAS, love this gun!

Had two of these which were re-chambered for 308. They worked pretty well, but I never used stripper clips. The bolt action Model MAS 36 was a nightmare, the upper forearm kept falling off, we tried to repair it, but it always came loose. Sold them all. Have to admit the 49/56 was a handy little carbine, and probably should have kept it.

cool to see still.... met french guys who carried these...... they were meant to be mag fed for the most part..... troops were issued 5-6 mags.... they can be fed by clips but those were meant more for topping off or a lighter/cheaper way to give troops more ammo if they needed it before they could reload mags....... similar concept to the m14 design.

Ive owned 2 MAS 44s over the years, they are great rifles, I never had any problems with mine, I used strippers and the detach mags, when using strippers you got to really push the rounds in down hard, I had I think about 10 mags for these rifles, I used them most of the time, secret...you have to clean the hell out of these rifles, for real, inside the chamber, the barrel,the trigger group, all of it, and bout every 50 rounds put just a tad of oil on the bolt, i had one that was converted to .308 WIN and the other one was regular French caliber, these are fun to shoot, I love all French Small arms, you should loosen that sling when shooting. When loading these with mags I only ran 9 rounds easier on the mags, Im gonna age myself, I remember when you could but these out of Shot Gun News, for $ 129.99 and a 400 round can of WW2 ammo for $ 69.00, Yep,

The range setting collar seems to work by adjusting how deep the barrel goes into the rifle mounted grenade. The deeper the barrel goes into the grenade, the more gas being utilized to propel the grenade, giving it more or less velocity depending on how far your target is.

Not sure what the deal was with the stripper clips, but the slam fire/runnaway is a known thing. You need to replace the factory firing pin, as it's free floating and steel (heavy). This was because original french military ammo had quite hard primers and the rifle needed the heavy firing pin to have enough energy to ignite. There's aftermarket ones that are retained with a spring or made from titanium so that you don't get those slam fires on modern ammo.

That's similar to my issue with stripper clips in the vz2008. It's a good idea, I love being able to carry extra ammo without the size and weight of extra magazines and I like being able to top off without changing magazines but the vz2008 simply does not work well with clips.

I noticed with mine, which is a crispy arsenal refurbished one like yours appears to be, the "new" magazine would fuss and not work well with the stripper clips. I bought just on happenstance a used mag later that was more broken in...and it works well with them. I am guessing some of the refurbished mags may have really thick parkerization that causes it to bind in some way.

I don't know if anybody has already pointed it out, but the way the riflegrenade-launcher works is this: you adjust the ring to the correct range setting (that's number x10metres), then you put the grenade on, line up the sights on the target, and fire a blank. This is a way of setting the range with expansion volume instead of elevation (Check out forgottenweapons' Knee Mortar video, that device works much the same way as this riflegrenade launcher). Hope that helps. EDIT: I just noticed it also has a ladder sight for the riflegrenades, so now I'm not *all* that sure what's going on...
@TheMajorActual
@TheMajorActual 7 жыл бұрын
Just found this, today (4-2-2017). The way the grenade sight works, is that the ladder sight is graded for two broad ranges, 100-200 meters (fired at a 74* angle), or 200-400 meters (fired at a 45* angle). You would raise the grenade sight, slide the adjustment ring to the correct range, slip the grenade over the muzzle, load the grenade blank, then adjust the rifle to the appropriate angle (74* or 45*), lay the sight on target, and fire......It sounds complicated, but you get used to it with practice.

At 3:53, that "slam fire"--I have never heard it called that before, but as I played it back in slo-mo, I could clearly see that it was a 2-round burst. Is that due to flinching under the recoil, the way the finger was set on the trigger when pulled? Is this model designed that way, being a military style rifle? I am looking for some education here, as I find these rifles fascinating! 😍

For launching rifle grenades the slider is for indirect fire with the butt placed on the ground. The farther the slider is down the farther the grenade sits and the more gas is trapped in the grenade which shoots the grenade longer distances. So setting near the muzzle is for very close fire. You set the grenade sight ladder on it's first setting and line up the two hooks on the left side of the sight ladder. For direct fire you put the grenade sight ladder on the top setting and aim at a target using the 50, 75 or 100 meter graduations based on how far the target is located. The soldier would then putt the butt of the rifle under armpit and grasp it tightly as he can. He would then use his thumb to pull the trigger back so he doesn't break his finger under recoil. And yes, the muzzle flies way up when you fire off a grenade. I really need to make up some blanks and get some of those cheap US trainer rifle grenades. They're the same NATO diameter as the ones the French used.
@pyrotechnicien
@pyrotechnicien 9 жыл бұрын
Hi! The grenade sighting system work in two fashions: direct and indirect fire. When using direct fire, the sliding ranging ring is not used and is kept at its lowest position (toward the shooter), the rifle is shouldered and the flip up ladder is used as a rear sight and the front of the grenade acts as the front sight. In indirect fire however, the rifle butt rests on the ground, the rifle is at a 45 degree angle (or 74 degrees for some grenades and ranges), the flip up ladder should be parallel to the ground and two small rudimentary iron sights located on the side of the ladder are used to aim toward the target while the ranging ring is used to dial in the range. The higher the position of the ring, the less range the grenade will have as it receives less impulse from the blank launching cartridge.
@pyrotechnicien
@pyrotechnicien 9 жыл бұрын
+pyrotechnicien Oh yes! I read also that the finger should not be inserted in the trigger guard when firing grenades... The side of the thumb should be used to avoid injuries... I guess that is in indirect fire mode...

Have you decided to change the pin to solve the slam fire? I read that the pin is pretty heavy and non French ammo use softer primers causing slam fire.

Dear TFB TV, You may find it helpful to set your videocamera to the fixed focal length (instead of an auto focus). Hopefully, it will prevent the image from blurring while moving on the shooting range. P.S. demonstration of the possible gun malfunctions makes your video even more interesting!

nice run, suck that you got these issues. which i don't understand as the 49 was used with the 36 clips, may be an issue with the mag? for the grenade laungher sight, how it work as described by the manual (MAT 1067): SHOOTING GRENADES: The semi automatic rifle model 1949-4956 is organized for firing all rifle grenades with a 22mm stabilizer, of french fabrication. The cartridge used is the special 7.5mm lauching cartidge without ball. Grenades are either fired in vertical firing, either in trajectory firing. Shooting takes place without magazine. Avoid as far as possible to press the butt on a hard body: rock, concrete, etc... VERTICAL SHOOTING GRENADES: Antipersonel grenades can be shot from two fixed angles: 74° and 45°. The angle of 74° is used for ranges from 100 to 200 meters. The angle of 45° is used for ranges from 200 to 400 meters. Preparing The Weapon: Raise the vent plug (gas impigement closed), snap the grid sight to the 74° or 45° notch according to the estimated range of the objective, slide the ring untill the graduation corresponding to the estimated range: direct reading in the case of firing under 74°, sleeve graduation mentally multiplied by 2 in the case of firing under 45°. Examples: 1) Objective estimated at 175 meters: engage the grid to the 74° notch - set the sliding ring to the 18 mark (180 meters) 2) Objective estimated at 300 meters: engage the grid to the 45° notch - set the sliding ring to the 15 mark (15X2=30) Engage the grenade on the sleeve untill abut on the reinforcement of the sliding ring. insert the special cartridge, close the bolt. Point the gun using the auxiliary line of sight (front rear sight) placed on the left of the grid sight (choose in the landscape an auxiliary point about the same level as the shooter). Shooting: Act on the trigger holding the weapon to the pointing position. TRAJECTORY SHOOTING GRENADES: the trajectory fire is always done with maximum pressing of the stabiliser on the sleeve: sliding ring pushed completely back. Preparing The Weapon: Raise the vent plug (gas impigment closed), snap the grid sight to the 74° notch, check that the sliding ring is puched completely back, engage the grenade stabiliser, introduce the lauching round, close the bolt. point the gun in the following way: aim the objective by alignig the top of the choosen sight chevron (50, 75 and 100 meters for the 73mm model 50 anti-tank grenades, 120 meters for the antipersonnel grenades in trajectory shooting) the top of the grenade body and the objective. Shooting: Act on the trigger holding the weapon to the ponting position.

Looks like the main prob was the clips, not the gun. The gun loojed smooth except for that slamfire. Did u ever try M14 stripper clips? The rounds should fit fine, i would think. Same size rimless case head. Are these cleaner than an AR? 1 commenter seems to think so. I favor pistons but i am willing to be convinced. Great video

Ive gotten it into my head that I want to get one of these. I love the idea of a 500-600 dollar battle rifle. And from my research they are also pretty great rifles to boot. Of course id like to find one in .308, but like, one that actually works LOL... And thank you for being honest and showing the problems you had. Most 'professionals' would have edited that out. Thats why I dig youtube. BTW, did you try changing mags? Its interesting how it was always the last 2 rounds on the clip, making me think the spring on that mag was binding in the same spot. And I think theres a replacement firing pin like for the SKS to fix slamfire issue... Isnt it funny how everything bad seems to happen all at once and only when filming? ;)

Hey Alex love the videos, do you know what caused that slam fire? Is that a problem with these rifles, or just a freak occurrence?
@tfbtv
@tfbtv 9 жыл бұрын
+Joe Cullen It is pretty well known. The firing pins are ungodly heavy, which was fine for hard primered military ammo, but not so good for softly primed civilian stuff. I had not experienced it with this rifle until that run, and I have shot it quite a lot. You can buy a lighter firing pin, and I probably need to.

Before I lost all my C&R after my '02 stroke, I had a nice 49/56 with an as new in box scope...the instruction booklet was so new the pages hadn't been cleanly cut by the paper guillotine when it was printed!!! I also had one of the extremely rare training devices...a 50s era inside-the-barrel battery powered flashlight bulb device that flashed when it was struck by the firing pin, complete in it's wooden case with instructions. IIRC my dealer friend got $700 for the lot...of which I received $600...it kept me in food and in a homeless shelter for the better part of two months at the end of '02 and the beginning of '03....thankfully I received my VA disability and a nice back pay check that allowed me to buy a mobile home in Mar if that year...a short time laterr I met my now wife, who after we settled our lawsuit following a nearly fatal crash in '06 replaced the bulk of my former collection (sans a 49'56). I don;t think I'll ever again see that rifle with sll its impedimenta!!!

the grenade launcher reminds me of the Japanese 'knee mortar', Forgotten Weapons has a video on it, from the quick glance at the MAS, and my basic understanding, the further forward the ring the less time the grenade is under pressure (and the less pressure it is under, though Im not sure that makes much difference). anyway, that's my theory.

The most critical fact against the FAL we know is the recoil. When i see the Mas 49/56 firing in video or archival films, i think that mas recoil isn't lighter than Fal recoil.
