you're loading the rifle wrong... the neat thing about the krag's mag is that with practice you can dump a handful of cartridges into the loading gate, and the door will align the cartridges when you close it. that's how the norwegians reloaded their rifle. also, there was a speedloader made for the krag if you can find it.

@@kyleschafer6275they tested en-bloc clips and found them to be unsatisfactory compared to the Krag capsule because they couldn’t be topped up and the mannlicher system was too open to the elements. In fact they also tested them against the Mauser with stripper clips and once again found it to be unsatisfactory because while the Mauser could be topped up and wasn’t open the Krag could be topped up while there was a round in the chamber meaning the soldier was never vulnerable. The U.S. also developed a system to allow the Krag to use stripper clips by putting a guide by the capsule (this was around 1897-98) the ordinance department rejected it as they were developing the M1901 which would become the M1903. A decent bit of the Krag lives on in the 1903 though as while externally the bolt resembles that of the 1893 Mauser internally it’s basically the Krag bolt, it even shares the same cocking piece. The magazine cutoff on the 1903 also is very much inspired by the Krag.

...and to solve the slow reload I use a Mosin Nagant stripper clip to feed my krag. Actually, it works faster on the Krag than on the Mosin. Looser fitting, it will capture the 30 army, but is loose so that once in position, all you do is hang it tip[ down, move your finger and they drop right in. Boom. VERY nearly as fast as a regular stripper clip and just as fast as the Lee Enfield's stripper clip, but looser and less force required. Try it out.

TFB TV: The Krag Jørgensen rifle was a very effective rifle at the time of bolt action infantry rifles. In Norway where the design is from, we used 6.5x55 ammo in it. To use a rimmed round like the US 30/40 Krag in a rifle, where the cartridges "magically" seats themselves in the magazine is not a very good idea, and you get rimlock and difficulties loading! Also we developed a speed loader for it. Just my opinion Good video and keep them coming :)

from what the "old wise men" say here in Norway (from where Krag-Jørgensen is from), the loading gate is better than stripper clips, they apparently developed a way to load it up completely with just one go (took 5 rounds in one hand, and let them slide in). Another great feature according to them, is the possibility to load a full "magazine", when you have fired 1-2-3-4 rounds. And of course the mag-cutoff making it possible to fire 1 and 1, by manually loading the chamber.

+Joakim Gulbrandsen Theres a similar technique to hold and load a shotgun that competition shooters use... In a civilian environment im sure its works fine. You did a fine job there, Alex. Sometimes finding the stripper slot on a Mauser can be tricky when you're hurrying, and feeding from the stripper can get a bit hung up, so I would say the side gate loading of the Krag was only marginally slower (as long as you're not dropping those loose rounds 😆). The real weak point is those damn rimmed cartridges, on a rimless 6.5 ×55 you just drop the rounds in as fast as you can without concern for rimlock. I only use round nose, soft point 30-40 loads in my Krag, chambers with no difficulties, that might have made things go a bit smoother for you as well.

TFB TV Oh, I'm not doubting that it's faster than the side gate in whatever type of round you'd choose. Still, with a Norwegian Krag, you pop the gate open, drop in the five rounds all in a go, and smack the gate shut. Not as slick as the Mauser, but much better than the trickling you were doing with the 30-40 cartridges. I won't put forward the Krag's speedloader too much, because that was never military issue and it would have had weight penalties versus the stripper clips. The speedloader is crazy fast though, and you can top off the magazine with a round chambered.

The Krag is from an interesting time where everyone was still trying to figure out the most effective bolt action/magazine system. That and the army was still very concerned about marksmanship and stuck in a frontier mindset. They had intended that the krag be shot as a single shot rifle, and the magazine was to contain breakthroughs. The Spanish American War set them straight on that idea.

I did not know that, thanks! The 6,5x55 one served to be the most popular though it seems, the norwegian army used it up until the second world war and during it, and anecdotally germans were said to have been terrified by the precision norwegian army/resistance showed with their krags. They are also as you said very slick bolts and famous for this, with old competition shooters using toothpaste and dry-cycling the bolt to make it even smoother. As a followup question: Have you shot any 6,5x55 rifles? I am sure you have tried a swedish mauser or perhaps a norwegian krag. I still use this caliber for hunting and long-range myself, love it.

It took 5 years by looking on the adoption dates, the Danish Krag 1889 and the Norwegian Krag in 1894. but in real life the action was reworked a lot sooner as Captain Krag himself was on the Swedish-Norwegian Rifle comission, and as such the Swedish mauser round was at least partially developed by the team behind the Krag rifle.

i keep hearing about this 'rim lock' thing... i've been shooting krags for over 20 years without ever experiencing it- and all i've ever done is just toss a handful of shells in and close the door. the original military load had a round nose bullet and i think the feed problems come from using spitzer design bullets. the only failures to feed i ever had were due to commercially loaded ammo (it wasn't a rim problem - they didn't want to feed even if i only had one round in the magazine). since then i've shot nothing but reloads with round or flat nose bullets and the problems disappeared.

Interesting video! Just a couple of comments, and they are mainly related to the Norwegian Army Krag m1929, which my father used to teach me to shoot. These comments may or may not be relevant to the US Krag. First and foremost, the Norwegian Krag is in 6.5x55mm, which is a RIMLESS cartridge, and that eliminates/minimises the possibility of rim lock and makes the cartridge much easier to load. But the beauty of the Krag using rimless cartridges, is that you can basically just dump a five cartridges in the magazine and the closing of the gate will align them automatically. Incidentally, speedloading devices were prototyped, but never implemented, because they did not speed up the reloading significantly. Secondly, the standard Norwegian Army doctrine during the Krag period was essentially a defensive one. Norwegian Soldiers were taught to use the single round magazine bypass facility (which I do not know if the US Krags have), fire well aimed single shots at long range, leveraging the excellent accuracy of the Krag. The five round magazine was to be held in reserve and only be used if being rushed by the enemy. So the rifle was never intended to be used in an “assault rifle” scenario - which the Run ‘n Gun basically simulates. Any review of an item must be based on the designed use of the item.... Having thus tried to uphold the honour of the Krag, I must of course admit that a stripper clip is much easier and faster to use. The Krag magazine was - let’s face it - only used to get around existing patents for magazine loading systems, I.e. the Mauser clip.

if you like running Spanish-American War era guns, then you should film a run and gun with the Springfield 1873 trapdoor rifle. Served side-by-side with the Krag on San Juan hill.

U did a nice job. Loading was pretty good, and the bolt cycling was fast and smooth. I have an 1898. Haven't been able to shoot it much, but i can tell it would be effective. It is beautifully made and very smooth. Later cartridge developments and spitzer bullets had an edge in velocity and range, but the Krag was no slouch.

Those were different times. The magazine has very few advantages to it, maybe the only one is that you can topp off the magazine while the rifle is in battery. Not anything to consider today, but let's say you've fired a couple of rounds, and you chambered the third round. You just open the port, and dropp whatever rounds you've spent in there. The one lug is a huge problem though, along with the asymetric construction. What happens when the rifle heats up 😂

I knew a guy who had a sporterized krag, he told me that he took a handful of bullets, and tossed them into the magazine, and he never complained about rimlock or any other malfunctions. Granted, he's also using it at the range, and not in combat, so that could make a difference.

Start casting your own bullets and reloading. Lead bullets are very easy on the bore, and your cost per round would be about thirty cents.

The Swedish Mauser in 6.5x55mm with stripper clips is one of the best bolt action service rifles ever produced. This Swedish Mauser has little kick or recoil, is easy to shoot, is highly accurate, and has excellent ballistics for a combat service rifle out to ranges of 500 meters. The next best rifle is the M-39 Finnish rifle in 7.62x54mm rimmed. The M-39 is a reformed Mosin-Nagant bolt action rifle. The .30-40 Kragg Jorgenson round was chambered in the lever action Winchester 95 but without being able to accommodate stripper clips. The .30-40 round was good but stripper clips were needed in the rifle to make it a viable service rifle. The .30-06 round in 7.62x63mm wastes a lot of gun powder for combat ranges under 200 meters. The Swedish Mauser in 6.5mm and the Finnish M-39 are the best bolt action military service rifles ever made.

During WW2 my Dad was in Navy boot camp where they shot their rifle qualification with Krags, I guess there was a shortage of newer rifles to shoot at the time. He complained that the recoil was pretty bad, but I would expect it to be about the same as a 30-06.

There was developed a speed loading clip for the Krag that made it way faster and easier to reload, but it might have been several years to late to make the krag a more popular gun for the military back in the days.

The rims don't need to be lined up in my experience. It seems to align them inside the magazine. Most other rim fire rifles do need to be aligned though(Mosin Nagant, SMLE ect)

I'd quite like to see a comparison of the early smokeless service rifles; the Lee Metford (or Lee-enfield mk 1), Mauser 98 Gewehr, Lebel Fusil, Mosin-nagant and the Krag. A bit of a turn of the century Special. Really enjoying the Run and gun episodes, keep it up!

Nothing clumsy about it. At San Juan, they were fighting uphill against a heavily defended position any rifle would have had a tough time in the same circumstances. In skirmishing, they didn't shoot the magazine dry and then reload. They used it as a single shot with the magazine held in reserve. If you were using the magazine- fire two or three shots, drop and reload as you advance. You always have a live round in the chamber.I have a near mint '98 Krag dated 1902.Go watch the old movie "The Wind and the Lion", while the Marines depicted should have had Winchester Lee M1895's it is still a pretty good flic.

To all those who comment, please specify which Krag you are referring to. For example, the U.S. Army technically used the "Springfield Model 1892" which is similar to other Krag's but not identical. I think the point of this video is to show the American version only. This rifle was used when America conquered the Philippines after the Spanish surrendered. The Philippine Army used Spanish Mausers but did not have the ability to make much ammo for it other than reloads. That multiyear campaign is where the shortcomings of the "Model 1892" really showed. The short-lived Cuban part of the Spanish American War got more publicity, but the U.S. Army paid far more attention to the campaign in the Philippines. That campaign was led by Gen. Arthur MacArthur and evolved into a very dirty, nasty war with a lot of massacres by both sides.

There do exist speed loaders for the Krag action which make the loading process a lot quicker. And unlike the American and Danish Krags, the Norwegian ones are chambered in a rimless cartridge which could also help.

The rimmed cartridges are imaterial. Rimlock only occurs in a feeding magazine. The Krag was designed to never create rim lock. It is literally impossible to rimlock on a krag. You don't need to feed them one at a time and can literally dump a handful into the side gate. The only issue is the top opening can catch a round where it won't close, especially on the latter rounds, but not nearly as difficult as depicted here, though not suggesting it could keep up with a clip fed system.

I have a sporterized US Krag. The sights really hinder you as well as the loading gate for this type shooting but it is a beautiful rifle for hunting and range work. Also as someone already mentioned it is harder to top off the Mauser action in the ready mode. A Krag can be topped off with rounds and still be ready to fire with a round always in the chamber.
