@@kyleschafer6275they tested en-bloc clips and found them to be unsatisfactory compared to the Krag capsule because they couldn’t be topped up and the mannlicher system was too open to the elements. In fact they also tested them against the Mauser with stripper clips and once again found it to be unsatisfactory because while the Mauser could be topped up and wasn’t open the Krag could be topped up while there was a round in the chamber meaning the soldier was never vulnerable. The U.S. also developed a system to allow the Krag to use stripper clips by putting a guide by the capsule (this was around 1897-98) the ordinance department rejected it as they were developing the M1901 which would become the M1903. A decent bit of the Krag lives on in the 1903 though as while externally the bolt resembles that of the 1893 Mauser internally it’s basically the Krag bolt, it even shares the same cocking piece. The magazine cutoff on the 1903 also is very much inspired by the Krag.

You did a fine job there, Alex. Sometimes finding the stripper slot on a Mauser can be tricky when you're hurrying, and feeding from the stripper can get a bit hung up, so I would say the side gate loading of the Krag was only marginally slower (as long as you're not dropping those loose rounds 😆). The real weak point is those damn rimmed cartridges, on a rimless 6.5 ×55 you just drop the rounds in as fast as you can without concern for rimlock. I only use round nose, soft point 30-40 loads in my Krag, chambers with no difficulties, that might have made things go a bit smoother for you as well.

TFB TV Oh, I'm not doubting that it's faster than the side gate in whatever type of round you'd choose. Not as slick as the Mauser, but much better than the trickling you were doing with the 30-40 cartridges. I won't put forward the Krag's speedloader too much, because that was never military issue and it would have had weight penalties versus the stripper clips. The speedloader is crazy fast though, and you can top off the magazine with a round chambered.

from what the "old wise men" say here in Norway (from where Krag-Jørgensen is from), the loading gate is better than stripper clips, they apparently developed a way to load it up completely with just one go (took 5 rounds in one hand, and let them slide in). Another great feature according to them, is the possibility to load a full "magazine", when you have fired 1-2-3-4 rounds. And of course the mag-cutoff making it possible to fire 1 and 1, by manually loading the chamber.

i keep hearing about this 'rim lock' thing... i've been shooting krags for over 20 years without ever experiencing it- and all i've ever done is just toss a handful of shells in and close the door. the original military load had a round nose bullet and i think the feed problems come from using spitzer design bullets. the only failures to feed i ever had were due to commercially loaded ammo (it wasn't a rim problem - they didn't want to feed even if i only had one round in the magazine). since then i've shot nothing but reloads with round or flat nose bullets and the problems disappeared.

To all those who comment, please specify which Krag you are referring to. For example, the U.S. Army technically used the "Springfield Model 1892" which is similar to other Krag's but not identical. I think the point of this video is to show the American version only. This rifle was used when America conquered the Philippines after the Spanish surrendered. The Philippine Army used Spanish Mausers but did not have the ability to make much ammo for it other than reloads. That multiyear campaign is where the shortcomings of the "Model 1892" really showed. The short-lived Cuban part of the Spanish American War got more publicity, but the U.S. Army paid far more attention to the campaign in the Philippines. That campaign was led by Gen. Arthur MacArthur and evolved into a very dirty, nasty war with a lot of massacres by both sides.

The 6,5x55 one served to be the most popular though it seems, the norwegian army used it up until the second world war and during it, and anecdotally germans were said to have been terrified by the precision norwegian army/resistance showed with their krags. They are also as you said very slick bolts and famous for this, with old competition shooters using toothpaste and dry-cycling the bolt to make it even smoother. As a followup question: Have you shot any 6,5x55 rifles? I am sure you have tried a swedish mauser or perhaps a norwegian krag. I still use this caliber for hunting and long-range myself, love it.

It took 5 years by looking on the adoption dates, the Danish Krag 1889 and the Norwegian Krag in 1894. but in real life the action was reworked a lot sooner as Captain Krag himself was on the Swedish-Norwegian Rifle comission, and as such the Swedish mauser round was at least partially developed by the team behind the Krag rifle.

john kendall I think Alex was referring to weapon performance being a failure, rather than the outcome of San Juan Hill. And in that regard, the American Krag really did fall behind the Spanish Mauser. Which, in turn, led to more casualties than what was necessary. Pretty much the only reason why America won was that the Spaniards grew overconfident, and were caught off-guard by the Rough Riders charging at them under the cover of Gatling gun fire. But if the battle came down to the rifles, the story would be way different.

@@hb9145 The Norwegian conscript army went up against a batlle hardened German army at the battle of Narvik, with the krag, in winter conditions, and won, using the Krag aagaisnt the Germans Mausers. And won. It was not the rifle that was the problem, it was the rimmed 30-40 Krag round that was inferior in that rifle....probably combined with bad training. The Norwegian army was recruited from men that grew up shooting the Krag in the Shooting clubs. The Garmans at Narik suffered a tremendous ammount of head shots. Karl Springenschmid writes of the German experiences: «The Norwegians tend to attack during bad weeather. They fought harder than ever now. That they where excelent skiers, and knew how to fight on skis, the Mountain troops had experienced, also that they where excelent sharp shooters. Interesting video! Just a couple of comments, and they are mainly related to the Norwegian Army Krag m1929, which my father used to teach me to shoot. These comments may or may not be relevant to the US Krag. First and foremost, the Norwegian Krag is in 6.5x55mm, which is a RIMLESS cartridge, and that eliminates/minimises the possibility of rim lock and makes the cartridge much easier to load. But the beauty of the Krag using rimless cartridges, is that you can basically just dump a five cartridges in the magazine and the closing of the gate will align them automatically. Incidentally, speedloading devices were prototyped, but never implemented, because they did not speed up the reloading significantly. Secondly, the standard Norwegian Army doctrine during the Krag period was essentially a defensive one. Norwegian Soldiers were taught to use the single round magazine bypass facility (which I do not know if the US Krags have), fire well aimed single shots at long range, leveraging the excellent accuracy of the Krag. The five round magazine was to be held in reserve and only be used if being rushed by the enemy. So the rifle was never intended to be used in an “assault rifle” scenario - which the Run ‘n Gun basically simulates. Any review of an item must be based on the designed use of the item.... Having thus tried to uphold the honour of the Krag, I must of course admit that a stripper clip is much easier and faster to use. The Krag magazine was - let’s face it - only used to get around existing patents for magazine loading systems, I.e. the Mauser clip.

A few questions. Were original Scandinavian krags chambered in 6.5x55? And ive seen competitive Scandinavian shooters use the krag and utilize a speed loader that was super fast. Are these speed loaders a modern addition to the gun? Or have they always existed?
@arildsolemdal69668 жыл бұрын
+LastCaress7 The original Scandinavian ( Norwegian ) Krags were chambered in the great 6.5x55. The speed loaders is as far as I know a rather modern invention - but DAMN they are fast!

Uh, wow! I thought that was very impressive! Great job!

You can get fastloaders for this and you can also feed it from the otherside in singleshot

The Swedish M96 Mauser is awesome and and has a very smooth mauser action as well. I have a 1900 M96 with original 120 year old barrel and reciever and still shoots like a dream very accurate at 100 yards. The Krag and Swedish mauser let alone the K98 mausers all have smooth bolt actions and are very accurate rifles.

It's interresting how the americans claim to be out matched by the spanish, yet the Norwegians never claim the german rifles outmatched theirs. We blame almost everything BUT the krag for our defeat in 1940...
@tfbtv9 жыл бұрын
+HaakonTheViking In the 1890s, small arms played a larger role than in 1940 (especially in a conflict like the Spanish American War). Tribunals blamed both the Krag and the Spanish soldier's superior fortifications in reality.

TFB TV Right, the way they where used probably mattered grately. I wish I could link to an awesome documentary that was shown here in Norway earlier this year, about the invasion of Norway 1940, but I can't find it any more.

During WW2 my Dad was in Navy boot camp where they shot their rifle qualification with Krags, I guess there was a shortage of newer rifles to shoot at the time. He complained that the recoil was pretty bad, but I would expect it to be about the same as a 30-06.

I inherited a Krag. Smoothest action I have ever felt, very crisp trigger and very accurate. At $2.00 per shot it doesn't see a lot of daylight, sadly.

Start casting your own bullets and reloading. Lead bullets are very easy on the bore, and your cost per round would be about thirty cents.

I'd quite like to see a comparison of the early smokeless service rifles; the Lee Metford (or Lee-enfield mk 1), Mauser 98 Gewehr, Lebel Fusil, Mosin-nagant and the Krag. A bit of a turn of the century Special. Really enjoying the Run and gun episodes, keep it up!

I have not personally shot a Krag (went abroad to study before I had time), but my uncle and grandfather has a Krag each, and they have the same thing behind the bullets as the Mauser has, though those are Norwegian Krags, and I do not know if there is any difference between them, but the feeding should go faster with that
@cassiapalladium29219 жыл бұрын
I knew a guy who had a sporterized krag, he told me that he took a handful of bullets, and tossed them into the magazine, and he never complained about rimlock or any other malfunctions. Granted, he's also using it at the range, and not in combat, so that could make a difference.

There was developed a speed loading clip for the Krag that made it way faster and easier to reload, but it might have been several years to late to make the krag a more popular gun for the military back in the days.
@bomba1905 Жыл бұрын
There do exist speed loaders for the Krag action which make the loading process a lot quicker. And unlike the American and Danish Krags, the Norwegian ones are chambered in a rimless cartridge which could also help.
@LUR1FAX7 жыл бұрын
Maybe you could try again with a 6.5x55mm version, as that round is rimless. Or would that be pointless?

A Danish Movie, not released in the US yet ,called the battle of hdarslav, I hope I spelled it right on youtube has shown Danish troops fighting the invading Germans using Krag jorgenson rifles and what looks like a Bren gun. Its in danish but has subtitles. if any sees it check out the rifles and see if I 'm correct in identifying the rifle in the film.

The movie is called 9. april :D Also, the town in the batle is called Haderslev. You can find all the combat scenes on youtube. Also they are using the Madsen lmg, very simmilar to a Bren indeed.

The rimmed cartridges are imaterial. Rimlock only occurs in a feeding magazine. The Krag was designed to never create rim lock. It is literally impossible to rimlock on a krag. You don't need to feed them one at a time and can literally dump a handful into the side gate. The only issue is the top opening can catch a round where it won't close, especially on the latter rounds, but not nearly as difficult as depicted here, though not suggesting it could keep up with a clip fed system.
@stephenbond19907 жыл бұрын
You know, i just looked at the point he opened the loading gate and it doesn't look like it would be too hard to add a charger guide at the back. Also, i think only the us krag had one locking lug where the Danish and Norwegian krag had two. Any chance of a review or field strip?
@Grandpadew9 жыл бұрын
Sure makes one appreciate the Military Men who had to use this rife in combat!
@SyndicateBrink8 жыл бұрын
You should get the krag speedloader, faster then reloading a Lee-Enfield and on par with a Mauser. Only problem I find with the speed loaders are that they are essentially 5 round magazines and would be heavy to carry multiple ones around during combat or marching
@2late2stop3 жыл бұрын

Not sure if rim lock is a concern with this design. Also if you tilt the rifle left just a little it is easier to load under stress!
@sdix3770 Жыл бұрын
Often it had been forgotten that the 30-40 Kraig also took stripper clips. The side gate was in case you ran out and needed to load the rifle.
@robertodebeers25513 жыл бұрын
You don't have to load one cartridge at a time. Every Krag shooter knows this. You just dump in a handful and close the gate. Try it.
@bigchunk18 жыл бұрын
How does the loading gate feed rounds into the breach without spring tension? Those rounds look like they are just being piled loosely on the bottom.
@arildsolemdal69668 жыл бұрын
+bigchunk1 There's a spring loaded follower inside the mag hatch. Unless you open the mag very slowly, it's hard to see it. But it's there. I own an M1912 Carbine, so no BS here :D
@bigchunk18 жыл бұрын
Arild Solemdal Oh thanks. The tension is caused by the closing of the loading gate then?
@arildsolemdal69668 жыл бұрын
+bigchunk1 The tension is created by BOTH the spring and the closing of the loading gate. I think I'll make a video showing this - tomorrow :D
