Brutal! Added by the magic skills of Naked City guitar legend BillFrissel, this special line-up doesn´t get behind other Masada works. On the contrary! Great set!!! Long live Zorn and his combos and composition in million ways!

Saw Masada/John Lurie National Orchestra double-bill at Town Hall around this time in the mid-90s. Brilliant.

Good stuff. Since my musical journey started out in high school in the mid 70's with the Grateful Dead & Frank Zappa (yes yes I know I'm a Troglodyte), I love it when he sounds like Jamband. I know the avant garde snobs give him grief for "making music that is more appropriate for an Allman Brothers stage than a (???? some prestigious jazz award) award recipient - you don't see Henry Threadgill (won same award) making music like this!" (paraphrased from a you tube comment on a Masada show a few years ago). News flash: I've seen a few Henry Threadgill projects & he does make jamband-friendly music too! lmfao

Bill should've been a more-often member of this amazing band.
Hi there. If you're still there ... After extensive research: 01 - Midbar (first recorded appearance Dalet/Vol.4:1) 02 - Halom (Het/8:4) 03 - Bikkurim (Bar Kokhba Chamber Ensembles CD1:12) 04 - Zemer (Zayin/7:9) 05 - Idalah-Abal (Alef/1:10) 06 - Hafla'ah (Hei/5:9) 07 - Avelut (Vav/6:8) Interesting that Zorn called six selections all from different albums of the eight classic Masada Quartet already recorded* (there were a further two albums of that complete set recorded after the Knitting Factory session posted), plus one from the Various Artists double album. There is no Anthony Coleman (or piano) on the above tracks. Another version of the set posted above adds two further outstanding tracks featuring Coleman as well as Bill Frisell: one I haven't yet identified in a pulsing 6/8 rhythm , the other "Gevurah" (which Coleman played in a piano trio as the first track of Bar Kokhba Chamber Ensembles - the first official release of Masada works outside the classic Quartet). But the first of these additional tracks ends with Zorn calling for appreciation for the musicians, naming JOEY BARON not Susie Ibarra. So I presume those extra tracks are from a different night (or at least a different set). Frisell sounds good with the classic Quartet, when you might expect the rangey, spacy and consonantly dissonant elements of his style to be at variance. The choice of material is judicious: even on Zemer, which might rush him off his feet, Bill doesn't need to add much more than ad lib hot clangs from outer space! *Is "10-04-96" really Tenth of April, or Fourth of October? (Zayin/Vol.7 was recorded 16 April and Het/Vol.8 01 August 1996.)

@@PCShawUK Wow. I can't thank you enough for this beautiful comment. You answered all the questions I had about this show... and then some! If I had a "KZbin comment of the month" (or even "of the year") award to hand out, you'd be the first recipient.

@@PCShawUK Well since all the Tzadik stuff is on youtube now I had another look and the first tune with Anthony Coleman is Vehuel from the Unknown Masada album
