We are told that continents are large dry landmasses exposed on the Earth's surface, but there is actually no standardized definition for a continent in the field of human geography, which makes it incredibly confusing for many when using such archaic and outdated terms.
In this video, I'll be discussing how I view the world in terms of human geography and what it would look like if I could redraw the continents, or more appropriately, what countries I would divide into various regions based on geography, culture, history, language, genetics and the other human traits we use to categorize individuals into a collective. Thanks for watching!

The Mediterranean Sea (along with the Pyrenees, Alps, Dinarides, and Balkan Mountains) has definitely created a cultural connection between southern European countries like Spain, Italy, and Greece. Having a similar climate is more important towards cultural links than we often think. That's why almost every empire has been "long" instead of "tall." Plus, the ease of travel and trade fostered by a shallow inland sea will reinforce cultural ties. While not linguistically Latin-derived like Italian and Spanish, Greek is nonetheless still more connected to them than Germanic languages. The three also share a stronger historical link via Roman history than even Gaul.

In Swedish we have "kontinent" which means roughly the same as the English word "continent". but then we also have the word "världsdel", which literally translates into "world part". This isn't really a geographical term, but a cultural one. Eurasia might be considered a kontinent, but Europe is seen as a världsdel. I like this, as it doesn't seem as fuzzy and arbitrary as English might make it seem. People don't tend to use the term continent wrongly and we don't have to have long discussions whether Australia is a continent or not.

@Kor Kalom Everytime I am abroad (currently living abroad aswell) when people hear me speak Greek most of the times they ask me if I am Spanish, then Portuguese and Italian. If you exclude the Ottoman occupation in Greece, there was always a common culture, history and in a sense, religion, with Italy even though these countries only keep the cultural parts of their religions rather than the spiritual ones nowadays. The latin alphabet was based on the greek much like the roman culture as well. That's why the Romans never actually conquered the Greeks, in the sense that they always considered them "close" and allies. Now if you go the the 20th century, when the Italians tried to occupy Greece during WWII, even though it was, of course, a militaristic attack, my grandmother always told me that Italians were there just to get chicks lol. Still today like 99% of the school trips have Italy as their destination and we still have an insane amount of words that we use in our everyday lives that are Italian, some are adopted, others adapted. As for Spain I think the most common things are linguistic articulation, relaxed way of living and most importantly, a crisis and austerity that, ironically, united people. Sure Greece has undoubtedly a lot of Balcan influence but in a political and european sphere, it is closer to the other southern countries than the Balcan ones.
@FaithfulOfBrigantia
@FaithfulOfBrigantia 5 жыл бұрын
I would argue Spaniards and Italians are more similar to France than to Greece. Spain and Italy's languages are Romance, just like France, and unlike Greece. Spain and Italy's religion is Roman Catholic, just like France, unlike Greece. Spain, France and Italy all have a shared history of (roughly speaking) being Celtic lands, while Greece had its Hellenic Identity, then occupied by Romans and culturally Romanized, while the Greeks kept their civilization, then Spain, Italy and France were occupied by Gothic tribes while Greece remained Byzantine territory, then Spain France and Italy had to deal with North African Arab-Berber invasions and occupation, while Greece had to deal with Central Asian Turkic invasions and occupation, then in the modern age Spain France Italy were always fighting eachother, with both Spain and France taking land from Italy and from eachother, while also running colonial empires, while Greece was under Ottoman rule. Even when it comes to climate, although Spain and Italy are mostly Mediterranean, the Northern half of Italy has a fairly continental European climate similar to Southern France, while the North and West of Iberia have an Atlantic climate like Western France. If France is Western, Italy and Spain should definitely be Western as well. "Southern Europe" is a pointless cathegory.

@@FaithfulOfBrigantia true but although i should add that due to the geographic proximity there were always parts of Greece that were controlled under italian states and even under the catalans and even parts of modern Greece that were italian until as recently as WWII and there was a seemingly uninterrupted stream population movement back and forth from Greece into italy for the most part and that is to say that although not enough to alter the whole picture there's definitely more to it than the obvious cultural borders you just mentioned.

All my life I've been referred to as East African by others (mainly in the US) and have even referred to myself as such many a times. Being Ethiopian, I was always Habesha (which includes Eritreans), or East African (which included Somalia to the aforementioned). I assumed so because our three countries share a lot in common, are neighbors, and we more or less look the same so didn't really question it. Additionally, many Americans, namely famous ones, found Ethiopian/Somali girls good-looking and so would refer to them 'East African girls' in their songs. e.g. as early as Nas and as recent as Drake (Poetic Justice comes to mind). So I think this popularized the term East African to mean only Somali/Ethiopian/Eritrean (and also sometime but rarely Sudani, but really depends on how Arab they're feeling on that particular day lmao). To cut my rambling short, when I first moved to the UK I came to realise, Americans and even we have been categorizing ourselves wrong, and East Africans already exist and they usually refer to Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda etc., but not including my country or the other 2, which they call the Horn of Africa. My ex, who was Somali-born Londoner, said that she has never referred to herself as East African, and she just goes by Somali, or African. Whereas in the US, nearly every Horn African girl refers to themselves as East African, and when men back home say things like 'I want an East African shawty' they really mean to say Horn African. It's just been interesting to learn lol, and I sometimes wonder what those people from actual East African countries think about the hijacking of their term lol. If you're still reading this, have a good day!

As a Kenyan, I always referred to myself as East African until I moved to the U.S. I lived in South Africa and considered East Africans to be Tanzanians, Ugandans, Rwandans, etc. I think this may stem from “British East Africa.” However, in the U.S, this seems to mean North East Africans so I just rarely use the term East African. To be fair, in Africa, you don’t really consider the identity of other Africans outside of your country. For instance, I never really thought much about the Ethiopian or Somali identity in Kenya. Honestly, don’t even think I thought about those countries. However, in the U.S, you interact with different Africans and because we are all grouped as one despite our differences, you have to think about it. Americans ask you if you know their Ethiopian or Nigerian friend so you have no choice but to confront and seperate yourself from other African identities.

7:23 It's for historic reasons. Estonians actually *feel* Nordic. We have mixed feelings about including them in that term here though to put it that way... That said, the Baltic countries have been fought over by Sweden and Denmark quite a lot throughout the ages. And in the viking age while the Baltic people had their own language, religion and culture there was a *huge* amount of influence both ways in the region due to trade, raiding etc. For instance one of the Norwegian kings where said to once have been a slave in the Baltics and later became a friend with a local ruler there from what I remember. While they linguistically where closer to the Slavs then us Germanic people they where close enough to us for even intermarriages to not be all that uncommon. And they often visited *our* markets as well. And given all the raids they had to deal with from our vikings they ended up with a warrior culture that we could respect. Russia and other both east and west slavic people on the other hand didn't have that coastal connection with us till the Rus people emerged and took over control over areas like Novgorod etc... The west slavic people mainly dealt with the Germans rather then us here in the nordic region since they where too far away from the coast for us to have anything to do with them. And the south slavic people dealt more with countries in the south like the western and eastern roman empire (and later the HRE and Ottomans etc) As for England being included... Eh... England really isn't a part of North Europe. But they *where* a area highly influenced by the vikings given that half of the country was under Danish rule at one point and several other parts of the UK has had varying degrees of norse rule or influence. While I don't necessarily agree with the choices they've made I can certainly see *why* they made them. So in short. I do not feel that the Baltics belong in east Europe. But I don't agree with the UN about England being a part of north Europe. While northeast England *used* to be a part of what I'd consider North Europe the time under Norman rule and later as a superpower changed the nation into something more akin to its West European cousins. In my personal opinion Scotland, the Scandinavian countries and the Baltics makes up Northern Europe with some rural parts of north England that could go either way. (So essentially the areas of what used to be Jórvík in Northumbria being areas I'd say may qualify as potentially in North Europe as well as Scotland, especially Shetland, Orkeney, the Hebrides and Man, Estonia, Finland, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Iceland, the Faero islands, all the various islands with Nordic people in them in the Baltic sea like Åland and *arguably* the other two Baltic countries.) Ps. Please read this: www.balticrun.com/the-vikings-of-the-baltic-sea/ I know, I know. It's not exactly a amazing source. But you get the idea.

I don't see why dividing some countries into multiple continents would even be a bad thing. Making Russia 'it's own thing' is quite disingenuous, since Western Russia is really different from the Far East and you can't really say the Western part is completely different from countries like Belarus and have no similarities. Dividing Russia into three parts would've been much better in my opinion. Southern Russia, Western and Eastern Russia. The same could be said for Brazil, where you group them together with Argentina and Chile. Also classifying Iran with Turkey is kinda iffy.

For Europe, I actually agree with the UN subdivision more than yours. The Baltic states have a lot in common with the Northern countries, except for their 50 years of USSR domination. The Mediterranean countries of Europe also have a lot in common. "Eastern Europe" and "Western Europe" are harder to define. Balkans and Mid-European plane would be a more geographical division, while putting all the Slavic countries together with Rumania and Hungary is more reminiscent of their recent cold war history. I don't know enough about the others to make many comments on those.

According to a cultural survey taken about 20 years ago, there are basically seven continents: Australo-Anglo-America (the U.S., Canada, and Australia being very similar culturally); and, in order from most to least compatible with Australo-Anglo-American cultural values: Western Europe, Latin America, Africa, South and Southwestern Asia, Eastern Europe, and East Asia. This continuum is based both on the U.S.'s relatively high practice of Christianity and its embrace of democratic and capitalist values. Of all the countries in the world, China is probably the one most unlike the U.S. culturally.

kalchrr Thing you have to remember is historical connection. Balkans are linked both to Rome and Greece. Think of Alexander and the Macedonians or Rome and gladiators like Spartacus. Also the southeast of Italy was originally settled by Messapians who were Illyrians. The balakans connection to Italy and Greece is certainly as ancient if not more than anything else that’s ever thought of. They’ve never really ever been that different from each other. Sure things changed culturally for Balkans after Slavic assimilation. @@hwhshhsjsjahzjsnns6719 Yes of course, considering that the Sultans of the Ottoman empire viewed people as muslims=citizens and christians=third class citizens/slaves, many people converted to Islam and after the Revolution and formation of the modern countries that replaced the Ottoman empire, there where population exchanges and christian people where moved/hunted out of Turkey or killed, while muslim people moved to Turkey. If you compare the other Turkic peoples with modern Turkish people you will see they are not alike. That's because only a few Ottoman Turks actually came and conquered the Byzantine Empire, many modern Turks are descendants of greeks/armenians/others that just converted. Even many of the Sultans themselves had greek ancestry because many christian women were kidnapped and put in harems and gave birth to the Sultans' children, that were then raised as muslims. Of course there are a few cultural similarities as a result of the Ottoman empire lasting for more than 400 years, the cuisine for instance. I hope that was helpful. Where are you from by the way?

Mason, I have often redrawn maps for a variety of reasons.( Do you know any clubs or groups of compulsive map changers?) My favorite map l'm researching now is the immediate post- Flood families and how they would have developed if they had stayed within the three main branches: Shemetic, Hamatic, and Japhetic. Some people are mixers however so a fourth group is inevitable as everyone is ultimately related to each other from Noah and his wife thus from Adam and Eve or a monkey- whatever. Obviously, I don't consider this hobby odd although I don't exactly announce my Interest either.

Mate, the reason Australia is a continent is because we have our own continental plate (it's on your own map), a constant population, documented history, tourism, military, ect.

Very interesting, thank you!! I find modern people have mingled so much, culturally and genetically (obviously some more than others), so trying to separate them into "cultural or ethnological continents" is not an easy thing to do. I find this great, btw!! (As for the greeks and spanish, we seem to have a few more things in common than just our climate, but again those similarities might exist due to the sun and the sea, or it's all just in my head!! 😁 )

hi! just a Spaniard here coming to clarify some stuff about Greece/Spain. just because we don't share a border or don't speak a similar language (even though Spanish has at least a 10% of Greek words), it doesn't mean that we don't share cultural and historical ties (and not just in times when the Ancient Greeks had colonies in the Iberian coast, but more recently Greece also had an important population of Sephardic Jews). although it's not the same when Greeks and Spaniards meet as when we do so with Portuguese/Italians, we kind of have that feeling of being like cousins. and, as many others have mentioned, the Italian saying 'una faccia, una razza' (one face, one race) only designates Greeks-Italians to its original extent, sometimes people like to include us as well. furthermore, our languages follow the same phonetical flow, so it's not as difficult for us to start learning it. overall, it's true that Greece might feel closer to countries like Serbia as regards to religion or to Cyprus, since they're mostly Greek too (kind of what happens within Catalonian relationships with Andorra); and even with other Balkan States like Bulgaria as they both share, again, an Orthodox faith and a former belonging to the Ottoman Empire. however, those similarities might be countered back with their Slavic culture against our kind of similar Mediterranean one. btw, Masaman, i love your videos! hope you keep creating content like you do

However, i think now they have completely changed, become very arrogant. Everywhere yelling about hatred to Russians, they nevertheless would still in huge quantities go in Russia to work and live. I don't think the idea of continents are ever going away. They are a simplified way to describe the earth. While your map is more accurate, the 7 continents idea has been used for so long, and not really broken or cause problems, so why fix it? Edit: but hey, what do I know, this is still a great video and amazing quality, keep up the good work. 👍

I do not understand, and therefore I do not agree? Could you please explain, in further detail what your current problem with the definition of "continent" is all about?
@mambojambo4874
@mambojambo4874 5 жыл бұрын
The problem is not about the way the continents are divided, but the criteria, because the same way Europe is split from Asia because of its culture, the Middle east could be, so he is just applying his own criteria equaly, instead of the normal arbitrary definition, but no version is wrong, they are just different, you could ignore culture and say that there are 3 continents (America, Afro-Eurasia and Oceania) and you would still be right by your own definition
@borekursbmv
@borekursbmv 5 жыл бұрын
@@mambojambo4874 this would depend on which geographic model you use to determine "continents", in some cases one would use Eurasia as a continent, but when doing so one I would typically also refer to North and South America, as simply America. The split between Asia and Europe is not only cultural and historical, but physical as well. East of the Ural mountain range, South of the Caucasus mountain range and to the east of the black sea-Mediterranean strait.
