What on Earth happened to the Assyrians, Chaldeans, Arameans and other such Syriac peoples who once ruled the region of Mesopotamia and the Levant with an iron fist? Today we'll discuss the ancient and modern history of one of the world's most influential and significant groups.
Although the Assyrian presence in the Middle East is rapidly declining, the Assyrian/Syriac identity is still strong around the globe, with the overseas diaspora mostly contributing to this historic revival and awakening of the community. Please let me know your thoughts on the Assyrians, Maronites, St. Thomas Christians and the Syriac people as a whole. Thanks for watching!

The Assyrians of today, the Nestorians are Jews who were called "Assyrians" by the British about 100 years ago, before that they didn't call themselves Assyrian: Benjamin the Second, who traveled to northern Iraq in 1890 (before the Assyrians called themselves Assyrians), wrote that the Nestorians are descendants of the 10 tribes of Israel and practice Jewish costumes

@Skinsjar Nammade Keralam powli alle. Njangalokke athinte oru bhagam maathram, a significant part maybe. Our emigration happened in the 9th century after the Islamic invasion reached Kodungallur and Kollam. Both cities were of Judeo-Christian influence, the Islamic invaders burnt both cities. Back in Iranian part of Assyria, my forefather Marwan Sapirisho was sent along with a few more families to rebuild and restore the cities. We built the city of Kollam in 2 years and we presented so many gifts to the Ay king. He was very pleased and happy as the city was rebuilt and his kingdom is safer, he gave us many rights and exemptions known as Tharisapally chepped or Kollam Copperplates. We continued to contribute to the trade here until the Portuguese inquisition where we were one of the main targets. Our history as a community started 3000 years ago at the time of Solomon the King of Israel. The Israelite traders settled here (King Solomon even had a Malayalee wife, the Holy Temple in Jerusalem had so many gems and gold that king Solomon purchased from Keralam). From then many Israelite and Jewish traders settled here and became a crucial trading community. Christianity was not a religion in the beginning, it was a sect within Judaism and so Mar Thoma came in search of the Jews and many Jews followed his path forming the St. Thomas Christian community. After that people like Knayi Thoman and many others like us came and settled here forming the Syriac community now Syrian is used for both communities. Ethnically we're still Jewish and have many Jewish traditions still.... Apart from us Kerala also had traders of Chinese, Persian, Arab, Ethiopian, Greek, Roman, Phoenician etc backgrounds. Literally everyone without any difference in religion is a mix of many peoples. Many Jews became Christians to escape persecution, many Jews and Christians became Hindus etc etc.... Sathyathil nammade tourism prakriti saundaryam allathe culture okke konduvaruanel adipoli tourist place aan Keralam, we have a very rich history!

@Skinsjar There's even a book called the Jewish Origin of Indian Peoples talks very much on this topic I think, I haven't read it. This history is the traditional family history, St.Thomas Christian history and of the Malabari Jewish community.

The Assyrians have been mistreated and neglected for far too long. From the early persecution of Caliphate times to the dreadful Assyrian genocide in the Ottoman Empire. To make matters worse the European powers (primarily Britain) completely ignored their claim to their land, dumping them in the frankenstein state of Iraq and placed under Kurdish autonomy where they've been subjugated to not only militant Islamic extremism (primarily ISIS), but also neglect from their own national government (Iraq) and their regional government (Iraqi Kurdistan) which has continuously made attempts to assimilate and destroy the last remnants of the great Assyrian civilisation. Even now, Kurdistan gets all the attention and international support while the indigenous people of the region have been forgotten and ignored. I can only give my heartfelt apology from the UK for our government's evil negligence of the people of Assyria. And I hope the preservation of Assyrian history and artefacts in our museums can help spread the word of Assyria and hopefully one day these artefacts can be returned to their rightful place; an independent Assyria. I can only hope that the last remaining Assyrians in Assyria and out in the diaspora can unite and establish a national homeland in Assyria much like the Jews did in Israel. Best wishes from England to Assyria.

I don't think you read my comment at all. I'm not Assyrian, I am English. And I take issue at your statement that 'English and Scottish people' committed genocide against the Irish. Most English and Scottish people were completely disconnected from their government. That's how it's always been, that's how it is now. The British establishment centred in London have done nothing but serve their own benefit by sticking their nose in other countries' business. You can see how disconnected London is from the rest of the UK by travelling out of the urban south-east. The rest of the UK is neglected by the self-serving London elite. Ireland was but one victim. I imagine you're probably Irish, so I'm not surprised you so vehemently hate us. The great famine was a result of government negligence, not a genocide. The Ulster plantations however were genocide. And I am certainly baffled (and impressed) that you attributed genocide to the Scottish. The reality of the Ulster settlers being Scottish and not English is one often ignored by Irish nationalists. Regardless of all that, I think you'd do yourself well to separate people from their government rather than hold blind hatred and bigotry against entire ethnic groups. You hate the British government? Perfectly fine, so do most people. Hate the British people for actions of the government? That's childish, intellectually dishonest, and makes you look like a massive arsehole. Then again, Irish nationalists aren't known for their tolerance of other people. And I'm certainly not surprised you used this video and my comment to rant on about the plight of the Irish. This is a video about the Assyrians, who've had it much worse off than you. Have some bloody respect. Take care.

Exactly my point. I can tell you as an Englishman that almost no one in England is happy with the London elite. The only people satisfied are those who live in the Square Mile and other elites (bankers, politicians, CEOs, etc). There's also Londoners themselves which have a reputation for being spoiled and selfish. A lot of the Scottish independence movement comes from dissatisfaction of the Westminster government. Though the Scottish actually have their own parliament, and they can achieve independence if they so want it. The English are in a very different situation, where we're stuck with this system with no way of getting rid of it. We don't even have a devolved parliament like every other country in the UK does. At least Scotland has some autonomy from the London elite. We don't. There's a lot of tension at the moment between England and Scotland, but the reality is that the regular people of England and Scotland are in the exact same situation. We're all neglected by the London elite. Just like Ireland was.

Finally! Been waiting for this, like forever. Assyrians are very interesting people. The fact that they've stood long after their empire was diminished, taxed and oppressed by certain caliphates, were never really considered statehood, were nearly wipped by the Ottomans, and now face discrimination in the Kurd area of Iraq. Since lots of Assyrians are around Mosul and Al-Anbar. They seem to love Iraq, they're loyal and patriotic for their country. Where in Syria, they've enjoyed a better and calm life. They fled to Syria as refugees from the genocide. And were openly welcomed by the Arabs once they settled there. They have their own schools where they use their language (Syriac) in Syria. Ever since then, the Assyrians haven't been oppresed by any regime in Syria. There are more Assyrians in Syria than Iraq. Because after Saddam was deposed, a large exodus of Assyrians have left due to the rise of Islamism, racist Kurdish nationalists threatening them in the North, and increased persecution over the years. Assyrians of Turkey haven't had the best luck. They were basically left to suffer and die. While 1.5 million Armenians were killed by the Ottomans, lots of Armenians were resettled after the genocide. Genocide ophan children were adopted by Turkish families, there were some Armenians in Atatürk's government cabinet, and went back to being merchants. But the Armenians also suffered grealty as well. However, the Assyrians weren't so successful and were more isolated during the establishment of the Turkish Republic. They were technically stateless. And haven't received the best recognition or attention by the Turkish government. Nevertheless, there are good amount still living in Turkey today. Once the most powerful rulers and one the of greatest examples of early civilization, large expansive empire, the empire collapsed, became apart of society and assimilated with the rest, endured centuries of oppression, were almost destroyed, now back again. Strong for 2,500 years! ASHUR! ASSYRIA!

The region (middle east) is the place with the longest recorded history on the planet, yet somehow we (the west) went on to generalise the entire region as Islamic/ arab, not only that it is a crime against the people living there today because of the conflicts made by ignorant colonial decisions, but a crime against the history of the place and the people who historically lived there. A little about the assyrians/syriacs in Sweden: There's something like 150-200,000 assyrians/syriacs living in Sweden. Which means no other western country has as many of them seen in relation to the population as a whole. The city of Södertälje just south of Stockholm has around 70,000 residents, of whom somewhere between one third and half are assyrians/syriacs. The last decade no less than TWO ethnically assyrian/syriac football ("soccer") teams from Södertälje, Assyriska and Syrianska, has played in the swedish first division. The secretary of commerce in the swedish government is a syriac: Ibrahim Baylan. The critically acclaimed filmmaker and video game creator Josef Fares is another famous syriac in Sweden. When the British owned Iraq after WW1, the Assyrians were very loyal subjects of the British. The Iraq levies, also called the Assyrian levies were raised during WW1 and fought for the British during the Anglo-Iraqi war, WW1, and WW2. My great-grandfather actually served in the Royal Marine Commando when the Assyrian, Kurdish and Yazidi companies were attached to it. He was a paratrooper and landed in Rome. As an Assyrian myself, I am very thankful to the British for recognizing our valour and aiding us during the massacre.

@Genghis Khan Tutankamun had Haplogroup R1b which was and still is very rare in Egypt, North Africa and the Middle east. That's because R1b exist mostly in western Europe. So Tutankamon was the one not aligning with the rest of Egyptians, not vice versa. Most of egyptians are of Haplogroup E. Also Y-Haplogroup isn't everything, it just highlights where a person originated from through their paternal lineage.

@Son of Mountain if you research your history you'll find that your people massacred them the Assyrians will say this themselves as well. Plus there's hundreds and thousands of Assyrians living in my country in peace but they're still being tortured and wiped out by your nation including not being recognised as people by you and your people which also attribute to their genocide that makes you have blood in your hands, in my country they have safety, go eat sh!t. I love the Assyrians because they're humble people with great generosity I know alot of them which are great people unlike yourself terrorist.

@Son of Mountain Really? So you don't mock the oppression of innocent people suffering from what I've seen you've mock our brothers and sisters in Islam of other ethnicities because of the actions of a few even though they're innocent and are suffering you'll side with the people torturing them I really can't take you seriously.

Are you aware some consider the term 'Nestorian' to be a pejorative? You seem to have mistakenly conflated the Assyrian Church of the East with the Chaldean Catholic Church as well however that's understandable considering their shared roots and efforts towards reunity. You never mentioned their influence in China either but perhaps that's because this was only a short clip.

Interesting video! I have always been under the impression that while Egyptian hieroglyphs and Mesopotamian cuneiform predate the Phoenician script, the Phoenicians developed the first phonetic alphabet in which symbols represented sounds rather than ideas. This led the spread of literacy and the use of Phoenician-derived alphabets in trade since they were easier to understand. Based on Masaman’s definition of Syriac people’s, do the ancient Sumerians, Akkadian, Babylonians and Assyrians all fall under the Syriac umbrella?
@barnosho1611
@barnosho1611 5 жыл бұрын
Originally, Babylonians were southern Akkadians and Assyrians were northern Akkadians. What separated them is their ideology. Then, when the Assyrian Empire expanded, other genetic groups like Arameans, Hittites etc. became Assyrians. We are descendants of that group and live in the area they lived in, we're not descendants of the Southern Akkadians (Babylonians).

before the assyrians and the ancient hebrews the netufians lived there the first semitic people lived in the levant : the amorites, the canaanians especialy the phonician people and don't forget the non semitic hittites, the hurrians all of them assimilated within the demographics of the region many of them abandoned their languages and spoke other languages in different stages of time we can find millions of modern speaking arabic - kurdish- assyrian people with a dna heritage from those ancient populations .

Assyrians mostly got absorbed by the Romans, got christianized, but what nearly erased them was muslim conquest, which is really sad because the Assyrian empire was basically the world's biggest empire at their time and incredibly rich in culture and language. At least the romans mostly allowed them to keep their culture, islamic conquerors forced many to adopt arab names and had many important sites destroyed.
